I don't understand all the negative reviews at all. I thought it was pretty enjoyable. Not a ton of action for a movie called Gunman but the action it had was done well, and the acting was top tier.

An overly long predictable action film that I expected better from Sean Penn.

Sean Penn at his best. Great entertainment and action. Critics who don't like it seem to be the American-style critics who expect the world to be neat and easily understandable. This is a great watch.

I can't believe Sean Penn accepted such a poor script & story line. This movie was uncomfortably and embarrassingly BAD.

I generally find Sean Penn repellent, but he actually does a good job here. He isn't James Bond or anything, but he does a decent portrayal of a tormented hitman trying to do right and taking out some double-crossing baddies in the meantime. The plot is basically all the other 'I'm out hitman' movies you've ever seen mashed up and microwaved. The ending is beyond rehashed and the action scenes are so-so. What is actually well done are the quieter points in the film when you don't know exactly what the characters are going to do next. I liked those quiet tension moments.

Good clean actions despite the PTSD...

I don't understand the poor reviews and box office for The Gunman, I really enjoyed it. Whilst the plot isn't revolutionary the film is extremely well crafted with mostly strong performances and high production values. Penn is a strong lead as usual and totally convincing as an ex-Special Forces operative. Winston tries a little too hard and Elba could have delivered better dialogue if given the chance but it's definitely competition for Taken and other similar action films. Very well shot and cut, I'd recommend it.

It's not a bad movie but it's not good either. I enjoyed the action parts but overall it's unremarkable.

Eight years after fleeing The Congo after a successful assassination attempt to change the country's political future, assassin James Terrier returns, suffering with post traumatic stress and looking to atone for his sins. However, after an attempt on his own life he is forced to flee the country again to seek answers from those who want him dead, taking him across Europe and into the path of the woman he left behind who is now married to the man who may or may not have betrayed him. Sean Penn joins a film genre that began when Liam Neeson first started punching bad guys in the face back when someone thought it was a good idea to kidnap his daughter. Penn has now joined the over 50's action thriller. This one wasn't too bad although Penn obviously really pushed himself for this role as the guy does spend a ridiculous amount of time with his shirt off which does distract somewhat from a fairly decent thriller. The bad guy is obvious from the first scene he appears in, the guy oozes slime so there is no big twist there but the story was ok and there was some pretty decent action. Ok for a one off watch but ultimately forgettable.

This is a movie about... something? Just 15 minutes in and I was already sitting there with a pained look on my face, trying to figure out what exactly was going on and what type of movie this was. Speaking of typing, every scene with someone trying to text and showing the text had the camera shaking so you couldn't see the text. It does improve at around the halfway point when the action takes over and allows the viewer to no longer care what this movie is about.

This movie was just awful. The plot is filled with holes, there's no logic to how things happen and the action isn't that great. Hard pass. Oh and Sean Penn is annoying, but he is always annoying.

I like the story of this movie, the sins he committed in the past follow him & the thrill is how he doesn't allow the people from his past to kill him is brilliant

Absolute junk, this movie is so stupid, so bad done , that looks made on purpose to win the prize of the worst movie of the year. Stay away of this disaster or if you want to experience the emotion of watching the worst movie of your life, so watch it !

It’s not as bad as most people claim. It’s fun, yet methodical with no real twists or surprises.

It's not an overly memorable movie and I just watched it for the second time and forgot I had actually seen it before. It's enjoyable and has some good fights scenes. Good actors as well. I think it's been unfairly underrated.
