The Gutter Reviews

You might find yourself howling at some scenarios in this film, even as you cringe at others (see Paul Reiser's character in particular). And maybe the laughs are enough.

A silly, stupid comedy about bowling, and I couldn’t stop laughing my ass off at it.

| Jan 3, 2025

A film so unabashedly unserious that it reinvigorates a long-lost era of Wayans brothers-style humor.

| Dec 6, 2024

The Gutter is an apt way to describe this trashy and stupid comedy about obnoxious people involved in bowling tournaments. The racist jokes aren't funny at all and shouldn't be excused just because African American filmmakers put these jokes in the movie.

The Gutter is an absolutely delight, and actual breath of fresh air amongst the mediocre offerings that get left by the studios.

Lovable, silly, dopey and totally enjoyable.

Feels like a Zucker Brothers movie. They throw so much at the wall, but a lot of it sticks, a lot of it doesn't, and it's dumb!... It's not "good," but I laughed a lot.

It’s worthwhile for anyone who appreciates impossibly dumb characters and Wayans brothers-reminiscent humor

Here’s a film that caught me off guard by how funny it was. Sure, it has an appeal that will work for some, but perhaps not all, but I can argue with a film that genuinely made me laugh a lot.

| Original Score: 7/10 | Nov 7, 2024

In addition to ridiculous — think the Wayans brothers’ parody pictures, or “Napoleon Dynamite” — the humor is almost uniformly broad.

| Nov 6, 2024

The Gutter doesn’t have actual malice, but it meanders.

| Nov 5, 2024

Shameik Moore and D’Arcy Carden make a great team in the lowbrow comedy reminiscent of 90s Farrelly Brothers. Very funny.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Nov 3, 2024

The freewheeling irreverence eventually settles into a more predictable underdog formula, resulting in a spare.

As with most comedies that throw everything out there (and throw common sense out the window) to get laughs, some bits and pieces don’t land. But the Lesters thankfully cram in enough ghettofabulous gags to keep me continuously giggling.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Nov 1, 2024

“The Gutter” will not change any lives or stay with viewers long after the end credits. But much like a casual game of bowling, it’s about the fun you had along the way. Pay it a visit—no weird shoes required.

| Original Score: 6/10 | Nov 1, 2024

[J]ust when all of the setups and characters should be reaching their peak, the material stagnates.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Oct 31, 2024

Goofiness reigns supreme in “The Gutter,” but actual laughs are weirdly limited to just a few moments in this study of bowling alley supremacy.

| Original Score: C | Oct 29, 2024

A painfully unfunny misfire. In a double feature with Kingpin, The Gutter would be the inferior B-movie.

| Oct 29, 2024

It gets a grudging pass for its likability, sheer volume of jokes, overachieving cast that includes Oscar winner Susan Sarandon, and charming, low-budget indifference to political correctness and match cuts.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Oct 27, 2024

To use some bowling analogies, The Gutter is far from a perfect game, but there are a few strikes amidst its many spares.
