The Host Reviews
“The Host” was one of, if not the best, “alien” type movie that I have ever seen! Most alien movies are full of slaughter and “the typical end of the world” type story lines. The Host shows that some aliens have compassion towards humans. Lots of unexpected twists and turns keeps the viewer interested until the dramatic conclusion. I highly recommend this movie for teens through adults!!
I have read this book multiple times, and I never expect the movie to fully live up to the detail achieved in the book version. However, this was much worse than I imagined it could be. For a storyline written around a main character with 2 different active streams of consciousness, there is barely any dialogue (internal or external). The writing is painfully plain, and the scenes are disconcertingly short and oddly devoid of emotion. The acting is terrible, and is further diminished by a soundtrack that could have been selected at random from a catalog of elevator music. There is zero attention to character development, and there is nothing fulfilling about making it to the end. I would not recommend watching this, even as something to have on in the background. If the storyline intrigues you, read the book - it's phenomenal.
It's a movie that can be liked by teens not grown ups. Big ups for the effort. Still a 9/10.
The reason why the host is such a fascinating movie is because the aliens and the humans and the kindness. The people have for the alien that joined forces with them.
Awful. Does not compare one bit to the book
I liked the concept and thought Ronan was great! It looked like it needed more budget and extras. At times it felt empty, like it was shot on a small set. I did think Ronan was fantastic though!
To me it's very unique. Although we already have enough alien domination movies, I really do enjoy this one
My wife likes The Host therefore I like it.
Intelligent advanced aliens needing human bodies to inhabit on earth do battle with humans understandably resistant to this form of takeover.
Without a doubt my favorite scifi movies. Emotional and meaningful, a fantastic tale. I think of it as the Romeo & Juliet of scifi. I am shocked at how low the Critics and Audiance scores are. If you haven't seen it yet, and you like scifi, definitely worth watching.
I think the "top" critics are just too callused and cynical to enjoy a pleasant young adult Syfy story. The acting was solid, and I have rewatched several times and always enjoyed it...not everything needs to be aliens popping out of your guts to be "good" Syfy... just so you know "The Expanse" is one of my all time favs.
Great movie! Seen it many times!
When my girlfriend told me about this movie I was... hesitant. But I overall enjoyed it. Meyer's is not a phenomenal writer, but a lot of the problems that plague her... other... work are absent. The romance feels more natural and the characters are more consistent and interesting. I'd probably rate it lower then 5 stars normally, but looking at its audience score I think it deserves a boost. A low B. The story isnt super inspired (It is still a teen romance novel at heart) and there are some questions that the film should have answered but failed to. But characters were overall fine, the arcs were interesting though could have been better developed and the concept was entertaining. I was actually a little sad to hear that this was supposed to be a series... but due to a lot of people boycotting it because "TWILIGHT BAD!" both were shelved. Luckily the movie really kinda stands alone anyways.
This movie did an okay job of conveying the story the book told. Unfortunately, they stripped the emotion out but left the drama in. There are key scenes in the book that solidify the empathy and vulnerability of Wanda and they simply skip over them or do not show the intensity of those emotions. They also leave world building details out making her acceptance by the humans feel incomplete.
The hype of this being "scientifically" the scariest movie of all time was so far off the rails it is akin to Fauci's science. My wife and I watched it last night and were bored stiff. Maybe we are just not into this zoom meeting stuff the youth seem to enjoy. Just not scary.
Solid 8/10 movie literally watch if ur a maze runner, divergent or hunger games fan. But gosh this is the most funniest review I've wrote. I started with quite a hateful comment but you can see as I fall in love with this movie because I made notes along the way. There is spoilers in my notes so keep that in mind but seriously this movie is great. If you wanna watch me completely change up about this movie then keep reading. SPOILERS: Did anyone else think it was so weird we were just pushed straight into the movie without any background? Like I understand we get to see what happened to the main girl through her memories when the alien thing takes over her body but I swear it feels so rushed. And also the main girls relationship with that boy was again so so so so rushed. Like when they kissed for the first time it was 1. awkward 2. cringe 3. unexpected. Like so far this movie is very confusing. But lets not lie the potential is too bloody good, like who doesn't love a good sci-fi. If they just gave us more background going into the movie and not rushed the relationship with the guy I honestly could say the movie is good. Keep in mind I'm writing this 16 mins through, lets see if it gets any better. notes during movie: -Ugh why do we keep skipping from thing to thing without context. Like what the hell is going on now. -Okay third kiss is cute -jared is HOT, but his personality is not like come on if that was my gf being inhabited by an alien I would do anything to try bring her back. Like its obvious wander/Melanie was not acting like the normal aliens, why didn't he hurry up and realise it. -okay movies not so bad now, I have to admit im enjoying myself -damn that's a lot of wheat -god I swear uncle Jeb is the only good character bro -whos this other guy staring at Wanda and stuff? is it jared bro I can't tell they look so similar. WHY ARE THEY LOOKING AT EACH OTHER WHAT ABOUT JARED. -okay why are all the guys in this movie hot -BRO NO THE GUYS KILLING THEMSELVES MADE ME CRY BRO THATS CRIMINAL -nvm the guy looking at Wanda isn't jared. but bro what is with jared he should be the first to believe that melanies still inside Wanda. idk tbh im team other guy that's been staring at Wanda. anyways I sense a love triangle coming on. -figured out that lover boys name is Ian. I am team Ian atm. -WHY IS JARED KISSING WANDA WHAT -OH NVM JARED IS SMART -okay Kyle, Ian and jared all look way to similar im getting confused -I swear to god Ian and Wanda/Melanie better get their happy ending -guys this movie is good im really enjoying it.. -NOOOO IAN AND WANDA THEY NEED A HAPPY ENDING -STOP THIS MOVIE IS SO GOOD -mel and Wanda calling each other sisters broke my heart bro -BRO THIS MOVIE OMG -Ian and wanda <3 -THE ENDING BRO WITH IMAGINE DRAGONS PLAYING MY GOD -NAH THIS MOVIE DIDNT START OF STRONG BUT BRO HOW IT CHANGED.
I absolutely loved it, but that's just me
I think the difference between those who loved it and those who hated is based on if you read the book or not. And then there is the typical critique that tries to clinically analyze things that don't matter to most viewers. Those that honestly didn't like it, that's cool. I actually enjoyed this movie a lot and feel there is a lot to learn from it and it was a fun watch. I only read the book after I saw the movie and of course, that is a much different experience. If you separate the book from the movie, I thought the movie was great.
