The Invitation Reviews

Apr 9, 2025

A must-see, unless you're inclined to quickly decipher the script and deduce the film's outcome, since the main interest here lies in the final surprise it's supposed to hold. Which is my case, so 3* only.

A psychological thriller that had me gripped from beginning to end. Excellent, natural acting, tension builds and builds, and I didn't guess the climax. As for the final scene, wow, truly disturbing.

Slow burn but good burn. Some great acting, good writing, good dialogue. And most of all, a creepy atmosphere that gets under the skin. The finale could have been a bit more... spectacular or revelative or something. Still, a good one.

Sometimes I want to gather all the world's horror filmmakers in a single room and yell at them until they agree, by binding legal document, to stop their lazy, rote, trite, and frankly offensive use of dead animals as a stand-in for good storytelling.

Slow burn to a dramatic conclusion. Great film.

This movie was def a slow burn. It could have been a lot shorter film. The ending was interesting, good spin on things. It was a good weekend watch.

This film was the ultimate slow burn.., an uncomfortable gathering of old friends that at first glance seems like a character study of people, once close, now grown apart with some past trauma added to the mix. Logan Marshall-Green plays a great starring character who spends the film trying to understand why his ex has apparently so easily moved on after the death of their child years before. He puts in a nuanced performance and I believe him to be a very underrated actor. I recommend this film if you are looking for a well written, character driven story that up’s the ante as the film progresses. Great movie!

The end is the only thing that did it for me. If they didn’t end on that note it would have been a waste of my time. The ending 10/10. I just wish we got a little more action in the beginning and middle.

A pointless film. I can't imagine anything more vacuous and boring than a dinner party with a bunch of overprivileged L.A. 30-somethings (Except maybe a dinner party with a bunch of overprivileged L.A. 20-somethings). The horror aspect of the film takes way too long to evolve, and the ending is inexplicable. I'm astounded at the number of critics who praised this movie.

Took over an hour for the build-up, but there was a little bit of twist at the end. Watched 5/19/24.

Decent slow burn budget horror flick filmed entirely inside of a house. It's predictable but when ish hits the fan at the end it really hits. Problem with these type of horror movies is that the ending is never satisfying because the plot is never complicated. Just like another horror movie The Menu, the ending is not satisfying.

Wasn't a fan, but not a bad movie.

I'm a sucker for a locked room mystery/thriller and this one doesn't disappoint. Going in I could predict what was coming, but that didn't make it less enjoyable. Definitely worth a watch.

It's entertaining but predictable

This is worth a couple of watches. The first time through, there was so much mystery, it keeps your attention. The second time through, knowing what is going on - watching it all unfold helps it all come together. Good thriller.

An extremely effective slow burn thriller. Misdirection and red herrings can get tiresome quickly, but "The Invitation" plays the audience so well (via some really strong performances and dialogue) that you'll just stop trying to figure out what's happening and go along with the twisty plot. That final shot is truly unsettling.

Its a slow burn, but it pays off in the end. Visually not exciting or creative, but the uneasiness and last half of the film are worth it.
