The Kings of Summer Reviews

Aug 26, 2024

Definitely has its moments of emotion. Yet something is either over done or completely missing. Sweet movie, but pretty silly.

Honestly one of the greatest movies ever I’ve ever seen. Simple, dramatic, & entertaining. 10/10 would watch again

This movie emerges you on its little world so much that, when it ends, you get that feeling of: ok, let me get back to my own reality.

A really good coming of age movie about boys, I remember the feeling I had while watching it, the music, the characters and I should watch it again soon see if my opinion changes about it

An okay relationships movie.

The Kings of Summer is kind of an odd movie. It doesn't necessarily fit either a straight comedy or a dramedy mold. The humor is very on the nose. It's funny, but doesn't necessarily match the tone of the coming age drama stuff. It's overall very enjoyable, but much like the guys' forest shack, it feels a bit slapped together.

Three teenage boys, in an effort to escape their parents' seemingly unbearable quirks, manage to pilfer enough building supplies from the garbage of a nearby construction site to enable them to build a two-story home in the woods, far enough from civilization to escape detection but close enough to walk to the store to buy food. If you can throw the logistical issues and the fact that they are able to avoid those searching for them out the logic window, The Kings of Summer is actually an entertaining, periodically funny and oddly touching film that anyone who ever considered abandoning the family nest will appreciate. Nick Offerman, as the politically incorrect and painfully blunt parent of the ringleader, and Moises Arias, as the eccentric third wheel of the runaways, provide the majority of the comic relief. The dialogue is quirky and original, the characters are all interesting, and the entire film is a tribute to the powers of friendship. Just remember to dispense with logic before you start watching.

I have no idea what other people see in this movie, it tries to be clever but all it ends up being is stupid. None of the characters are likeable and the script is asinine. The idea could have been good, but the execution is just silly, and not in a good way. Nick Robinson, who really is the only good thing about this movie, tries his best with what he was given, but in the end the story just falls apart. Don't waste your time.

The Kings of Summer, even though it could be such an Slapstick Comedy Story they somehow made out of that Filmart that probably every Filmmaker appreciates. The Screenplay or in General the Story is good as well and at some Point that probably was the Dream of every Teenager. The Film has a very Experimental Camera Style where they always try something new and they really benefited from that, they worked also quiet a lot with Slow Mo. And the Characters are just so sympathetic and you can really relate to them. RATING: 4,79

It's my favorite movie

One of those films that sneaks up on you, The Kings of Summer was just as much a delight on this latest viewing as when I first saw it a few years ago. I think it's fair to say most boys concoct some sort of plan — no matter how calculated — to build some sort of refuge with their friends free of parents, homework, and whatever other responsibilities they may have. For Joe (Nick Robinson), Patrick (Gabriel Basso), and Biaggio (Moises Arias), that plan came to fruition in the dense Ohio woods. What, and how quickly, they constructed their bucolic getaway is unrealistic, but it doesn't matter — the reveal of their labor is shown beautifully in a blue-tinted scene as if they had found El Dorado in the Amazon. With their newly manufactured freedom, the trio engages in slicing random objects with machetes, smoking cigars, playing cards, swimming in the river, and punching each other in the arms — you know, guy shit. There are also many laugh-out-loud scenes, and interaction between Joe's father, Frank (Nick Offerman) and Gary (Kumail Nanjiani) is comedic gold — I have Youtube'd this scene alone many times. Patrick's parents (Megan Mullally & Marc Evan Jackson) have great chemistry and are just annoying and overbearing enough to feel sympathy for Patrick, whom, keep in mind, is approximately fifteen. Biaggio is kind of annoying at first, but by the end of the film, he becomes one of my favorite characters. The scene between him (speaking in Spanish) and his father (speaking in English) is also fantastic. The recurrent topics of monopoly and snakes also lend to foreshadowing and a great pay-off. The most gorgeous scene of the film is when Joe, hungry and desperate, slays a rabbit with a fuck-off, William Wallace sword. The Kings of Summer is a film with staying power and one of the more underrated movies of the 2010s.

Anyone who favorably compares Kings of Summer to Stand By Me should be carefully monitored for other signs of mental illness. KoS is played for laughs, yet provides none.

O PIOR FILME DA VIDA. Nao tem graça, portanto nao é comedia, não tem suspense, portanto não é terror/suspense, não tem HISTÓRIA, portanto não é filme.

Hilarious I'm a sophisticated and fresh way! Great cast that works well together! This movie is very special to me and helped me through some very rough times in my life and I watch it every year for the Fourth of July. Huge fan of Robinson's portrayal of Joe and the interaction of the younger cast members. While there are some back story issues and continuity errors the overall script, portrayal, and chemistry of the movie is fantastic. 15/10 recommend for casual watch or even family night!

Great, coming of age movie. Strong cast of actors. I watch the movie about once a year.

One of the better coming-of-age stories with some absolutely A1 performances from the leads, especially the astute and appealing Nick Robinson as Joe and Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation’s Ron Swanson) as his dourly hilarious dad. The breakout performance, though, is from the perfect work done by Moises Arias in presenting the quirky but loyal and admirable misfit Biaggio. His comic timing and pathos are spotless from start to finish. The actual story (teenage lads build a liveable cabin in the woods and stay there for weeks) is slightly implausible as most teens I know can’t tear themselves away from screens, which require electricity and wifi. But I’m glad they caught this previously unproduced script and made a little gem out of it.

So far, out of all the movies I've seen, The kings of summer managed to stay in my top three for the past four years. Great acting and beautiful shots. The interactions have a beautiful rawness to them that I can't manange to get out of my mind. I found myself very invested into the characters and their feelings and motivations. As many times as I rewatch it, it feels like the first time. Well chosen tracks that perfectly compliment the atmosphere.

An indie flick which has undertones of impending adulthood and the loss of ones greener more magical years. It is done so very fittingly in the woods as the kids run away from the problems of life.
