The Last Duel Reviews

Apr 17, 2025

It's culturally anachronistic period piece porn, with an authentic Hollywood happy ending; that is, if Hollywood existed around 1370. Good work as usual from Adam though. They realised this was the late 14th century right? 1984 never proved its point so well as with this bizarre post-modern soap opera reimaging of a period that is close to the point of myth as far as history goes.

Such a poorly edited film, which jumps all over, back and forth, to characters we don't care about because character development is so shoddy. Could not watch the whole boring thing.

Surprisingly good compared with next ridiculous movies from Ridley Scott, in particular The gladiator II but also Napoleon that I consider really bad movies.

Definitely one of the best medieval period pieces I've ever seen. The story was gripping and the visuals were amazing. I definitely recommend it for history fans!

Medieval-themed films can be so captivating with their rich history and intricate storytelling. It's wonderful to find a film that does justice to that era. The attention to detail in costumes, settings, and dialogue can really transport viewers back in time. It's always a treat to find a movie that immerses you in a different world. This film really hit the mark in terms of authenticity and storytelling.

They tell the same boring story 3 times in a row... The duel at the end is awesome though. This movie would be much better if it were 30 minutes. Just give a quick background of the issue at hand and head straight to the amazing duel, that would get 5 stars.

A very good story well told. Good acting by Damon, Driver and Comer.

'The Last Duel' is a fun time. I remember hearing this flopped at the box office (not that that's a sure sign of anything) and had a joke told at its expense at the Oscars, therefore I wasn't too sure what to expect from this Ridley Scott movie. Happily, I comfortably enjoyed it. The plot is a little bit thin, especially for a 153 minute flick, though due to how it is portrayed via differing viewpoints I was always interested in what I was seeing onscreen. I actually was anticipating it to drag at some point down the line, though that surprisingly never happened. It's a great cast. The looks of Matt Damon and Adam Driver are questionable at first, though by the conclusion their appearance was one of my favourite things about their respective characters. The performances of Damon and Driver are strong, as is Jodie Comer's. Ben Affleck is also noteworthy, a word that can also be used in reference to Željko Ivanek and Adam Nagaitis - though, admittedly, for those that is more of a personal thing; it's always nice to see fellows from 'The Walking Dead' universe appear in other media.

Good cinematography, with compelling acting. I'm soured on the movie having looked into the context, with the writers downplaying the brutality of what happened to Lady Carrouge and changing the tones of testimonies given during the trial.

A genuinely engrossing story told in a three act structure. The acting, writing and cinematography all made for a truly memorable experience.

I thought this would be as great as The Gladiator. Still a good film though.

It's not Ridley's best film, but still grand and epic in many ways with drama he has mastered so well at this point n his career.

Almost perfect, there are some little mistakes that kinda ruined the whole work. Great acting by both Driver and Damon. Very interesting the idea of developing the film through three different point of views.

Enjoyed this but why does everyone have a British accent and then Matt Damon’s character sounds like he’s from the Midwest US? Loved the 3 different perspectives. This was sooo funny.

Ridley Scott, while not a perfect director, he is one of the best at making effective period pieces that truly feel steeped in the era's they portray. Once again Damon gets lost in his performance, and Jodie Comer is the central piece that ties the entire film together. Impeccable cast, top notch cinematography and a climax that would make Braveheart blush. There are issues with story clarity in the 2nd and 3rd act as well and I'd been disingenuous if I didn't at least mention Adam Drivers English accent. Its not terrible but there are times when I wonder... Why not cast a British actor?? 8.8/10

It's a beautiful film. It has exciting action and an interesting premise - the story told in three parts or perspectives is nothing new but unique in this genre. However, many of the main characters are played by American actors with English accents in France...I couldn't ignore except during battle scenes. Authenticity is paramount in a movie like this. Maybe France ran out of French actors at the time. :-\
