The Lodgers Reviews
Metaphorical and intriguing- a unique social/historical setting, very E.A.Poe-esque. A slow burn gothic horror with an engaging atmosphere. The visual and story elements are interesting, the pacing subdued and thoughtful. Not for thrill seeking fans, more a film akin to the The Others, The Turning of the Screw and Crimson Peak. Very world immersive and excellent character actors. You wish you could learn more about the soldier and the fate of the female twin. A purposeful commentary about the fall from grace of the deteriorating (inbred) aristocracy to the foils of the 20th century. Also touches on how the rich sacrifice the poor/soldiers to win their personal battles/the soul/possession of their land.
1920. Rural Ireland. Two twin brothers living in a sumptuous real estate are oppressed by generational rules supposedly meant to protect them against evil forces. The girl breaks the rules when she meets a boy in a nearby village, provoking these supernatural entities. "The Lodgers" is a gothic story built in a unique set (the famous Loftus Hall). But the plot lacks on substance as its horror layer always plays on the safe side by delivering the usual jump scares.
Not a very engaging or satisfying film
I enjoyed this film for the acting, and the intriguing plot. However, there really isn't a lot to the film. It is leisurely in its pace, and sets up for a nice climax. Unfortunately, I found the climax underwhelming. While the plot is basically a horror story. There really isn't a lot of horror or scares. I also found the source of the haunting/horror to be kind of bazaar and certainly unique.
This was a very strange kind of olden-days movie that just dropped the viewer right in the middle of the plot with no explanation. There were creepy whispers, but they were difficult to hear. This was a very strange curse to hold the entire supernatural plot. The ending was extremely odd, disappointing, and with far too many naked people.
The Lodgers, isn't particularly exciting but it is very intriguing. The whole story line is slightly more weird than wonderful which certainly gives it a lot more flavour. It can be quite slow but if this type of thing (psychological/ paranormal horror) is something that interests you then it will most likely hold your interest. It unravels nicely with a few jump scares, heroine moments and heartbreaks to make it worth a watch or two.
Horrible, slow boring bad story line, don't waste your time
Contrary to the other reviews here, I enjoyed the movie and I think you would if you are more into gothic movies (as in ghosts, supernatural entities) than horror (as in gutts, brains and gore everywhere). The story is both creepy and somewhat philosophical. The atmosphere is eerie and the plot draws a lot of parallels to what is right and what is wrong and how we pay for our sins.
Pretty rote gothic ghost story. The touch of the family curse of kind of cool, but it's otherwise a by-the-numbers spookshow.
maybe I missed something but I can't fully understand the meaning of this movie
What just happened??!
Beautiful cinematography and solid acting don't hide the fact that The Lodgers is not scary. It creates the right mood and tension to build a fascinating mystery that eventually gets more complex than clear. The curse is never explained and the ending raises more questions than it answers.
It's probably only a 3 star, but I gave it 4 because there aren't many movies like this. I love suspenseful, atmospheric, thriller type 'horror' movies. I wish there were more of this type of movie out there.
This was painfully boring. Upon reading the plot, I thought, oh wow, this sounds super creepy and full of suspense. It starts off with some eerie parts and I think it is only natural to think that it would progress nicely from there, but nope. Literally nothing happens. Well, that's not entirely true, the siblings argue a lot and theres some panic with finances and they cant have anyone in the house or the monsters come apparently. I didn't even care, I was hoping someone would show up so that something would actually happen, but I was bored to death. I didnt even see the end since I had given up on any hope that it could get better and the only ending that wpikd have made me happy is if the monsters or whatever they were just came in and killed the siblings. dont bother
The only thing scary about this movie is that old house that they live in. I would not want to spend a night in it or take a bath in what has to be the creepiest bathroom ever. I found the premise about generational incest being preordained for this cursed family interesting but the characters, especially the boy are weak as is the script.
The setting was nice. Love the era. that's literally it. hORRID. EVEN WHEN IT SPELLED IT OUT AT THE END TO HELP ME UNDERSTAND WTF I JUST WATCHED, IT STILL DIDN'T MAKE SENSE
This movie's simplistic but moody exploration of the darkness of humanity was breathtaking. The spooks were effective for their context. I would have given it five stars if not for the ending - I understand the story is all about the punishment of the innocent, and knew there wasn't going to be a happy ending, but you can only watch so much of the sweet and innocent getting destroyed for emotional value before it just gets aggravating and starts feeling spiteful.
269. The Lodgers. This was a bizarre tale, but I enjoyed still... It takes place in 1920 Ireland and tells the story of twin siblings Rachel and Edward as their 18th birthday approaches, and a destiny to fulfill... Not to weird right? But I didn't mention that they have to follow some strict rules in this house!! And one of the big ones is bedtime, because the night belongs to their parents, ya know the ones that died a few years back, by committing suicide in a lake... yea. Did I mention that their parents were also twin siblings? And their parents before them?? So there is that. Edward is a ghost of a person, never leaves the house completely depends on Rachel, and seems to be ok with succumbing to their fate, while Rachel is looking for a way out, and she might be a little more devious than she lets on. You be the judge! Some cool imagery, and definitely creepy at times, a cool tale to check out... Filmbufftim on FB.
