The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) Reviews

Jan 10, 2025

This is an entertaining film with a unique structure that still manages to engage its audience effectively. The first half focuses heavily on character development, and it’s not until the midpoint that a significant inciting incident propels the plot forward. Despite this unconventional pacing, the drama is executed skillfully, with well-written characters brought to life by a cast of talented, recognizable actors. The film balances its dramatic elements with moments of humor that generally work well. Technically, it’s competent without being visually remarkable, but it suits the film’s needs just fine. Some viewers may find it challenging to connect with the characters and their involvement in New York’s contemporary art scene, but the family dynamics at the heart of the story feel relatable and authentic. Though the writing is strong, the dialogue-heavy, upper-middle-class family drama format might not appeal to everyone, especially with its slower, setup-focused first hour. However, it’s a well-crafted piece, even if it doesn’t break new ground. The tone and style reminded me a lot of a Woody Allen film, so fans of his work would likely find this an enjoyable watch.

Baumbach at his best. Humanistic, humorous, heartfelt while never going into sappiness. And incredible performances from the whole cast. Just a great film.

As with “Marriage Story” and “Frances Ha,” Baumbach showcases his nonpareil savvy for exhibiting truths of human nature within everyday simplicity and pugnacious family dynamics. The purity of his screenplays consistently seems to get the best out of his actors too: Sandler, Stiller and Hoffman all give some of their best work here.

Too chaotic and too much talking. Great actors - poor movie!

It's really difficult to understand why this movie was ever produced. For the sake of the actors, why have they decided to play a part in such a boring movie I don't really know. Comedy, is it? Drama, is it? For 90% or the movie I hoped the 온라인카지노추천 would break. Atrocious time in front of the 온라인카지노추천. Good acting doesn't hide the uselessness of this movie.

The intense, witty, sincere, realistic and smart dialogues were both the highlight and the pitfall of this movie - there was just too much of it. Also, given that 2 of the protagonists are such well-known comedians (Stiller and Sandler), it was almost as if there should have been a comedy where there was a veritable family drama.

Not exactly new territory for Baumbach but I appreciate that while his character remain insufferable, his own cruelty as a writer seems to have subsided. We see this family as deeply flawed people not simply monsters.

OMG!!! I watched 2/3s of the film and had to stop! My ears are burning of so much talk!! Made me soooo tired! 🥱

Stinks! Don't put yourself through this!

Baumbach again proves to be a master storyteller with this portrait of a fractured family and it's eccentric members. Well cast (Hoffman is fantastic, and one of Sandler's best roles).

The Meyerowitz Stories takes you full swing into a story entirely human, ironic, and absent of self-indulgence. I loved every minute of this.

Boring. Really really boring.

This inexplicably well-reviewed movie, a pretentious, annoying, slapdash mess, attracted a good number of excellent actors, Adam Sandler aside.

It very much had potential. However, it was too long and had some weird details that were unnecessary (like the daughter's weirdly sexual films). The movie has some very good moments but falls flat.

This family puts the fun in dysfunctional. The characters are uniformly unpleasant and talk past each other. Not my cup of tea.

I still don’t know how I feel about this movie. The acting is really good. The story just feels like it’s missing something. Im all about intricate movies, even slow paced ones, but this one just didn’t do it for me.

The only film I've seen from Noah Baumbach where I genuinely wanted to switch off by the time I was halfway through. Quality acting and a great director confusingly churn out narrative mush that fails to leave a reasonable impression at any point.

It's hard to understand how Baumbach regressed so far since releasing The Squid and the Whale. Believe me when I say that these were the two longest hours of my life. The last twenty minutes were like counting down the minutes until summer break as a teenager in middle-school. Somewhere between a bad imitation of a Woody Allen film and a horribly edited imitation of a Baumbach film. The movie is painfully self-conscious and pretentious, the flat-footed jokes are repeated over and over until you realize the joke is on you. If the goal was to create a realist portrayal of a conceited and dysfunctional New York family nothing could have been more distracting than miscasting Adam Sandler and Ben Stiller as the leads.

Sibling rivalry and dysfunctional parenting are hackneyed motifs made refreshingly comedic with Noan Baumbach's masterful writing and directing in his idiosyncratic family comedy observing the eccentric dynamics of the titular kindreds.

Very nice movie and full of depth and emotions, perhaps a little too slow and this makes it slightly boring at times, but everything is compensated by being nice and with a very elaborate and well-structured plot
