The Mole Agent Reviews

Jun 2, 2024

Creepy & voyeuristic views on the elderly in their declining years shame on these filmmakers for taking advantage of these frail, fragile people.

I liked the plot of this documentary film but at the end, I wasn't quite sure what conclusions had been reached. I thought it was nice to see how the titular mole had managed to befriend different people in the home, seeing how he got on with others and sometimes how staff behaved. It's an interesting idea and it made me think of Richard Osman's debut novel 'The Thursday Murder Club', which is about a group of care home residents that investigate crimes (this documentary doesn't focus on a murder though, it must be said). I suppose its true that society maybe hasn't made many films, or otherwise concentrated on, care home residents - what they experience and so on, in the past. Certainly not as much as the lives of younger people and so its nice to see something a bit different, I guess. I enjoyed watching this, I just wish that I felt it was more clear what had happened at the end (unless I just wasn't paying enough attention?). I would recommend this to others, yes.

Breached credibility by skeptical form under supposable "documentary" by its coherent narrative functioned by documenting tactics leaves a question mark on its identity of genre association and deliverance, but it doesn't hinder its humane subject matter of invisibly built impact unveiling the actually objective amidst the secret mission between friendship and reflected family through humor and captivating heart towards a solid conclusion polished in a timely matter. Absolutely loved it. Maybe a bit staged at times. But laughed hard at times, and felt challenged by the end of it. Great Documentary.

What started off seeming as just a funny spy documentary became much more deeper and emotional by the end.

Good-hearted and charming with a powerful message and reminder of true love and familial duty

For a documentary, it's staged and it doesn't show the actual reality. It's acted and staged, clearly not reflecting what actually happens on the elder houses

This Oscar nominated documentary has an 83-year old man going "undercover" at a nursing home... though that aspect gets dropped fairly early on and it becomes a rather touching look at life inside the home.

Not at all what I expected. heartwarming, heartbreaking, and wholly relatable if you have older family members. and we all do or will.

When the daughter of a nursing home patient suspects that her mother is being subjected to elder abuse and theft of her possessions, she hires an investigator to verify the claims through surveillance conducted by an elderly "spy" he recruits to check in as a temporary resident. What the mole finds, however, doesn't exactly jibe with the accusations but, instead, reveals a very different truth about what it's like to be a resident of one of these facilities. Despite this, though, director Maite Alberdi's latest documentary offering struggles with telling its story, leading viewers to believe it's headed in one direction while actually moving in another less-than-apparent manner, one that's not well delineated until the film's closing moments. What's more, it's not always clear just how much of a "documentary" this release really is, given a premise that seems to be more than a little "planned" in nature. Also, its attempts at humor, though cute at first, fade as the picture progresses and reveals a more substantive, serious narrative, one that makes its comedic material look cheeky as a consequence. There indeed is an important message here, but its presentation deserved better treatment in the finished product.

This is what cinema is about !

A unique, tender look inside a retirement home. It draws you in using a cheeky plot: sending in an 83 year old "spy" to investigate the home's conditions. From there you witnesses a series of candid thoughts and a powerful reflection on ageing.

Don't expect some sensational or ground-breaking exposé from this heart-warming Chilean documentary by Maite Alberdi in which an octogenarian is hired as an undercover agent to investigate suspected abuse or bad treatment of a client's mother at the retirement home she is staying in. Played a little for laughs, if not for light amusement, the music and set-up mimic that of a spy thriller as private investigator Romulo Aitken interviews potential candidates for the job, before settling on Sergio Chamy, a fine looking gentleman who can just about work a smart phone and in desperate need of some distraction in his recently widowed life. What follows is a charming but mild-flavoured film that sees him befriends the mostly female residents there as he infiltrates and investigates the home for any wrongdoings. What he uncovers, however, is a more universal problem facing people of a certain age, that might seem too obvious to state or make a fuss over. That's not to belittle the value of this film but in fact serves as a reminder that we need to treasure and treat our senior citizens with respect and after watching this film, it'll take a hard man to resist the urge to call up one's parents or an older relative for a quick hello.

It's so heart warming, a beautiful documentary about how life ends up been for old people in Chile, been abandoned and confused most of the time, but also finding support and love from spending time with people and really listening to them. Love it!
