The Night House Reviews
Doesn't rely on cheap scare tactics and does a good job building tension. However, the lack of a good ending or fully understood ending leaves something to be desired.
A little twist on thriller/suspense by having supernatural sprinkled in, very entertaining to watch the downward spiral of possible insanity of thinking the house is being haunted by ghosts.
hero vs villain movie
This is a fairly tense and really well acted Horror. There are some genuine creepy and scary scenes, and the story keeps one invested and guessing. It could have been even better if a few things were changed, but overall this is a more than decent watch.
Really good psychological horror with interesting twists.
Unreal tripe woeful
The highlight is definitely Rebecca Hall's performance, as she powerfully portrays grief, disbelief, shock, and other emotions while investigating her late husband's past. The plot is engaging, though some aspects feel a bit underdeveloped. Still, it's worth watching.
A horror movie about a haunted house.
I really liked this movie. I never thought about the ending, but when it got revealed everything got answered. You should definitely watch it.
NGL it was more of a romantic movie than horror when you get to know the plot but everything was so incredibly good, the scenes, the plot.
Overall, it was a satisfying psychological horror. However, it's confusing ending makes it a little bit bland.
As a matter of horror, this movie is very original. The voodoo doll and Caerdroia books gave it a fine mystical touch. Good one.
Its an interesting movie
There's enough good will in the pace and execution and steady hand in the first act of the film to allow me to forgive the horror movie cliches I hate surfacing as the film ramps up. But for every step backwards there's a creative, sneaky and surprising double step forwards. Casting Sarah Goldberg from Barry as the best friend, with the baggage she brings from Barry, makes her a great uncertain and unpredictable foil. And even before the movie begins to flourish there's engaging human discussion and deep, nuanced characters and relationships and Rebecca Hall acting her balls off. It seeds in its mystery and its direction well so I won't spoil it here. Suffice it to say that the best of these kinds of horror films are at once predictable and then surprising and The Night House delivered for me in spades.
Original and creative with some real tension and creep factor
This is a slow burn with an interesting twist on the haunted house genre. Solid performances from the cast with a slow peeling back of layers as we learn more about the central characters (one of whom is actually essentially a McGuffin). While this may not be what the modern horror fan is used to, this is a classic, psychological thriller in the the tradition of "M" and Alfred Hitchcock's best works. Nothing scares you more than unanswered questions and your own imagination.
the movie tried. but it couldn't.
Frankly, I liked this movie. However, it always leaves you with the feeling: show me more. The atmosphere of tension and the jumpscares are really well done and work. The mystery is good, but it doesn't leave you super surprised at the end. It seems that the big finale lacked a little more creativity.
Man, what a movie. One of the best I've seen in a while.
One of my favorites, this movie is about grief and alot of the scares are in the details, and background. This movies brilliance can be found in dialogue above all else, the acting is phenomenal but the action is secondary. People with patience will adore this movie for it's storytelling and pace and people who don't desire that in their horror will not. It's that's simple.
