The Nightingale Reviews
Well acted considering the script. A rather simplistic reflection of abhorrent behaviour by the British during colonisation of Australia. But it's full of tropes that generate muted sympathy for the hapless victims. It's a Davida and Goliath account: unnuanced, gratuitous and will gather dust.
This is a hard movie to watch. What the British did to people of Australia and to the Irish. And the ending is real crazy. This movie is a mess , just like the mess these British managed to create at the time . This truly was a prison planet and hell back then, I could barely watch about 4/5 th of this film, it’s too much horror squeezed in to 2 hours
Fresh perspectives on colonial brutality and the intensity of the drama keeps you on seats edge
Not a great film. It’s not all the violence that put me off, I have a strong stomach and have no problem with violent films as long as they are good films. This is not a good film in my opinion for the following two reasons. Firstly it feels like a story from some endless rambling modern day fiction paperback; none of the wretched lead characters would die, they just kept on living. Secondly, I found it hard to get into the characters; it felt as though the actors were actors trying their hardest to get themselves an Oscar. Sorry if that’s a bit harsh, but really, I found this film extremely tedious. That is not to say that I don’t find what happened to the indigenous people of Australia appalling; what the white settlers did there and elsewhere in the world is so awful, so sad.
Cruelty and epic revenge
This an awesome movie from start to finish ,in the first review i read a lady posted that 3 older ladies got up and left the theater ,maybe they thought this was a documentary about a cute little birdie ,its not ,it s an action adventure ,drama thriller and top notch in everyway a film can be made
The people who dislike this movie for it's strong content are weak. It's art, it's meant to make you feel a visceral reaction. Pain, sadness, trauma. Feelings, especially the bad one's people refuse to confront elevate art. This movie is unique, it shows a point and place in history not often captured in cinema. The revenge plot is captivating. The interracial friendship that forms between the two leads as they realize they aren't so different is compelling. This movie is not for everyone, if you watch cinema to shut your brain off and relax this isn't it. If you watch movies to invoke a strong emotional reaction and enjoy art this will be in your top 50's.
I was pleasantly surprised by this film. And if Hollywood wants to continue giving us female "heroes" this is how they should write them. Clare was the definition of a real "strong woman". They didn't give toxic male traits or give her superhuman fighting ability. Bravo and I highly recommend
Truly the most depressing movie I've ever watched. Original enough to keep my attention and hoping for the outcome we'd all love to witness but this movie gloomed me up for the rest of the day.
Great film. A slow burner that won’t be for everyone. For people who are fans of good story telling, they are in for a treat. Aisling Franciosi gives a solid performance.
Absolutely horrible movie that showcases scenes without any warning. There are things that shouldn’t be shown on screens.. just utterly useless brutality
Very weak plot, poor direction and a pointless lead actress, just a worthless film, 02:16 of boredom.
A brutal and unrelenting look at life in the early days of colonial Australia. With some stronger production values, this movie could of been elevated to the highest level of Australian cinematic achievements.
Kent shows her range as a director as this movie has little horror, but great moments. It gets a little bogged-down by its themes to really soar.
A true reenactment of how Australia settled in the early days. Not just indigenous people but how criminals are treated, appalling.
This movie had me hooked from start to finish. So many emotions in every scene. A must see!
A graphic tale of revenge that hits more marks than it misses.
A wonderful tale of developing understanding of equal humanity between the races that emerges in the battle against a common inhumanity.
One of the most terrible films I've ever seen. First 40 minutes of the movie is rape scene after rape scene, literally. Followed by her husband's murder directly after, you guessed it, being forced to watch her getting raped. Then you guessed it again, directly raped more afterward, in front of her dead husband. Continued immediately with the morbid killing her baby because it was crying while her mom is being raped, more. The rest of the movie is an awful revenge plot-line with terrible and campy acting. I felt bad for the lead actress being put into this film. The people praising this film are sick in the head.
