The Normal Heart Reviews
The shear force of Larry Kramer's fury that lives in every line of the play has always been able to transcend its flaws, so my issues with this adaptation mostly stem from Murphy's direction of the material. It all moves too fast and I think a film version of this play would be better served if it took a little more time with these characters and situations. Still, the power of the play is hard to stifle and the central performance by Ruffalo is very good.
The Normal Heart poignantly captures the desperation that came with AIDS epidemic and the complex reasons it grew so quickly. Both Bomer and Parsons give gorgeously nuanced performances. While the sad parts of the movie shine with human love and perseverance, the main character's (Ruffalo) anger about the desperate situation comes out as constant grumbling and screaming outbursts. Although appropriate and essential to the story, these tirades are so frequent and intense that they grate nerves.
I finally had the chance to watch this masterpiece, which so clearly shows the inadequacy of the US government during the early eighties, and the hatred of so many among the population, and apparently especially witin the ranks of the ruling jerks, against gay people, or LGBTIQ+ in general, which shockingly still persists today. As we all know the US government and the whole world should have learned something from the AIDS epidemic, but the swine flu came and reactions were slow, SARS, Ebola, and nobody ever reacted adequately. In 2019 Covid 19 eventually appeared, and there was no mental excuse that it would be killing off some folks who deserve it because of their sexual orientation, and still many governments around the globe reacted way too slow, once again the US government being one of the worst in handling the crisis, not surprisingly, just as in 1981-86, during a time of a racist, misogynistic ultra rightist president in power. Nobody can pretend anymore not to have access to the right information as when we analyze any given post for its veracity, we can find out the truth within in just a second or two it takes to type in the keywords. So if our governments are all dumb and arrogant we have to take our future into our own hands, just as those gay communities in the early eighties did, trying to fight for their rights, and in fact, their lives. This movie is as moving as it is important, and though it is tough to watch, it should be an obligation in every school, and most of all, government offices. 7/10 points
watch this during the day so you can go outside and get some sun. whew.
Gut wrenching and brilliant.
I think that this film was great and Mark Ruffalo did a good job but I would have much preferred all the lead roles all go to openly gay actors. That was the film's only flaw in my eyes.
The most brutally confronting portrayal of life as a gay man in the early 80's. Torn between the liberation of the sexual revolution, the medical uncertainty and the societal denial. Buckle up, this gets real, real quick. Brilliant performance by Mark Ruffalo, on par with his performance is Spotlight.
undoubtedly the best made-for-television movie i've seen, gives us all a hard look at what the AIDS pandemic was REALLY like in the 80's
The way in which the history of AIDS is addressed at the beginning of its pandemic, makes knowledge spread in the same way that the disease has spread. The performances are impeccable and it is difficult for you not to have empathy for those who lived at that time, where the lack of information killed and excluded the LGBTQIA+ group.
An obviously important film, not only about the Aids/HIV epidemic in retrospectiv, but also the deep of human relation and all it's specters, from love and desire to fear anger and hate. Brilliant performances from so many of the actors, which carries an otherwise well balanced story.
This television drama film has filled with a clear review of our history of AIDS and its effect to many people. I liked Mark Ruffalo's role in this film as he was able to convey frustration, determination, and love at the same time. It provided a contrast to his versatile roles such as the Hulk. The messages were expressed clearly and it worked to make me feel emotional after finishing.
Marvelous, frightening and extremely real, thanks to top-notch performances from Mark Ruffalo, Julia Roberts, Matt Bomer (incredible and unforgettable), as of the whole cast alike. The screenplay treats the subject matter with truth and pathos like I never seen before in a LGBTQI+ movie, Ryan Murphy excels in his directional effort. A very necessary motion picture for everyone to see.
Mark rupe baraca actoriei
Thanks to the dramatic subject matter, emotional plot, and great acting, this is a movie that is easy to recommend. It's not without its faults though and those hold it back from being something great.
This movie has extremely graphic gay sex scenes. it seems like a great story about an important issue, but the sex scenes were a little too much for us! I am not a prude at all. but ....
