The Outsider Reviews

The Outsider is needlessly cruel, dour, and slow. No amount of brooding from a handsome leading man can save it.

| Jan 29, 2021

It's hard to fault The Outsider too much though, as it will predictably fall into the black hole that is Netflix original movies, so here's hoping that Zandvliet, Leto, and especially Hjelm move on to better things in the near future.

| Original Score: D | Oct 24, 2018

The Outsider feels like the first draft of a story that could have worked with more tweaks and energy. It is another case of a project featuring talented people, but never truly exploiting their talents.

Japanese mob story is very violent and bloody.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Mar 23, 2018

It's something we've seen done better, countless times before.

As part of your subscription dues, it won't seem quite so painful a sit, but even then, do you really have 120 minutes of your life to devote to such mild, uninteresting filmmaking?

| Original Score: 2/5 | Mar 19, 2018

...a solid crime movie, elevated by a keen sense of place and some fine performances.

| Mar 15, 2018

This is a movie that's way too concerned with justifying its main character than in giving that main character anything interesting to do or be. This white savior movie can't save itself.

Jared Leto delivers a chillingly hypnotic performance that keeps us guessing what his character will do next.

| Mar 13, 2018

The movie we get here is another bad Netflix film, so dull it almost makes one angry, so bland you'll forget it the minute it's over.

| Mar 13, 2018

The Outsider is Nick, and perhaps that's the film's most fatal flaw. We're never allowed near the guy, and Leto's not the type to draw you in or emote. He's too alien.

| Original Score: D+ | Mar 13, 2018

After twenty minutes of The Outsider, I kept asking myself why I should care what the character of Jared Leto was doing, or why he was there. [Full review in Spanish]

| Original Score: 1/5 | Mar 13, 2018

Take Leto out of the picture and you have an even less noteworthy movie, a yakuza tale with an originality deficit.

| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Mar 9, 2018

Can a gaijin ever be trusted like family, or will his motives ultimately be self-serving? It's an interesting question in a story that's otherwise completely devoid of interesting questions, but The Outsider is too enamored with its foreign star.

| Original Score: D | Mar 8, 2018

"The Outsider" is a slick copy of multiple, much-better films and 온라인카지노추천 series. It's so well-polished it's practically featureless.

| Mar 8, 2018

Designed to offer Western audiences the opportunity to see a Caucasian movie star, and a heartthrob one at that, in an unusual genre setting, The Outsider rarely manages to rise above its audience-baiting concept.

| Mar 8, 2018

Dull, flavorless, and fundamentally incurious, "The Outsider" is a clueless misfire, the cinematic equivalent of a study-abroad student showing off the kanji forearm tattoo whose meaning he never bothered to learn.

| Mar 8, 2018

The only thing about The Outsider that even comes close to cracking the oppressive shell it's encased in is Tadanobu Asano's performance as Kiyoshi.

| Mar 8, 2018

Organized crime may be organized, but it's hard to imagine that it's actually as dull as The Outsider makes it out to be.

| Original Score: 4.9/10 | Mar 8, 2018

Generic but not uninteresting, with a good performance from Leto.
