The Outsider Reviews
Honestly this film gets a lot of hate from a lot of people. But honestly if your into Japan especially the Yakuza then you will enjoy it a lot. Yes Jared leto isn't the greatest guy on the planet but if you can separate Jared leto as a person from the character he is playing as you can really like it. I would easily rate this as a 7.8. the ending isn't isn't something to write home about, but the atmosphere and the story is pretty good. Instead of taken the negative critics or even the positive ones just watch it yourself and judge it for your own. You know you better then anyone else. The negative critics are just upset because they didn't get a completely epic movie to watch..over sensitive, they all can't be winners. I enjoyed this film for what it was..a story about a American POW in Japan after WW2 and finding himself joining the ranks of the Yakuza. Is it perfect? No not even close. But is it as awful as everyone says it is? No not even close.
The Ending made it a masterpiece of Satisfaction 😄
This film seems to get a lot of harsh reviews even from critics. However, this seems shallow and almost ignorant to the complexity of the ideas and emotions that are being shown to the viewer. This film has so many layers to it with much of the characters feelings and emotions being shown visually. Rather than critic the film for not telling the viewer how they should feel about a character, it instead allows the viewer to make their own judgments on a man who is by no means good. It shows the line a person might walk when they have nothing and are given the opportunity for love, family and a place to belong all the while staying true to themselves. All in all a good film with some great visuals and a plot which keeps you going until the end.
I thought the movie was a solid 7/10 Jared did the performance his way and the way only he can, sure other actors could have brought more energy to the role but I think this set the vibe for the movie.
realmente la película intenta hacer una propuesta bastante interesante, a pesar de que hay momentos donde se torna lenta y se espera un poco mas, la película vale totalmente la pena, incentivando un poco hasta una secuela.
Painfully dull..For the majority of the film you don't know what the hell is going on. Slow, slow, slow. Jared Leto is the least charismatic actor in the world. I hate this film.
This is the only Yakuza film I have seen so far and I am dismayed by the amount of bad reviews. It looks and feels pretty strong, the scenes at the port near the end are amazing, and an overall feel of the Yakuza way of life. Maybe it doesn't stand on par with other such movies but hey neither does my ex-wife to any of my current friends ;) Not bad for a First time.
Boring, hard to stay awake though this one.
Jared Leto as the hypnotist. By the end of the movie, I sat with my back straight and enjoyed his presence on the screen. An incredible experience. It was like watching some top movie from the 90s
solid film, great practical effects. just a basic good watch
I've watched this 3 times. Great intro, showing Leto at his moody best. I thought the script original, darkly amusing in places and compelling all the way through. So surprised it's got such a bad rating.
Technically good but falls short due to genre cliches are archetypes. Borrows a lot (ie too much) from Takeshi Kitano and his masterpiece Brother. Leno does his best with a character that is 2 dimensional at best.
I think most of the people didn't understand the beauty of this movie. Setting time in raw and dark Japan post WWII, where yasuka war was at the pinnacle. In a world where everything revolves around honor. This movie isn't about a white man saving the world like you can read on everywhere. But how friendship and honor bonds can become stronger even coming from someone that was your ennemy, than from someone you though was your brother from the beginning. Put in a perfect ambiance and by incredible performance of the actors, this movie is a little gem sadly missed by many.
I'm not a big Jared Leto fan but he was good in this. It's an entertaining movie about betrayal and revenge. Much of the dialogue is in Japanese which adds nicely to the atmosphere.
Love it. Very minimal and reduced, sort of Japanese Zen spirit. The view of post war Osaka spot one. Japanese cast excellent. Dark and moody..
I think it's clear by now that, as far as scores go, movie critics are about as useful as square wheels. The Outsider starts good, gets better, and finishes with a satisfying ending that leaves room for a sequel but doesn't demand it. Although part of me wants to see a sequel, in reality I like how the movie ended and would be satisfied if they left it as a standalone film. MILD SPOILERS AHEAD. Something too many movies rely on these days are cutesy dialogue quips and snappy one-liners to cap off overly dramatic action scenes where the actor's face is basically a cameo in an otherwise CGI and stunt-double created franken-scene. "The Outsider" actually steps outside of this and lets the story tell itself through suspense, great cinematography, and an eerie lack of internal dialogue. Even the music backing the scenes is without strong melody or lyrics. Although we get glimpses into the minds of main character, ultimately there is little dialogue and no backstory to fill in the gaps, and at the end I felt hit with a realization that I still didn't really know who this man "Nick" is. His last name, his hometown, his family; nothing. The only thing we learn is he is a man of indominable will and decisive action, thrust into a situation where most if not all in his situation would be crippled by indecision and loneliness. The movie also does an excellent job of making the antagonist seem human, instead of some one-dimensional caricature of a villain that anyone could write and act. In conclusion: I look forward to watching this film again. I'm certain there are little details I missed that will ask even more questions and give even fewer answers... and I love a movie where that's a good thing.
This was too westernised, the concept was blatantly to promote the western ideology. And, it was predictable and boring.
The movie sometimes looses its own plot especially in the beginning as he says to the main protagonist ''Once im in the hospital my brothers will come for us'' yet we never even see them coming for them, all you see in the next scene is main guy coming out of the prison we never know how he got out. Another problem i had was that the movie felt dull to watch. We barley know anything about any of the characters in the movie like who they are. We dont even know how much time is passing, one scene a guy says ''yo we dont like him lets get rid of him'' to another guy who agrees And then its never mentioned ever again. I wouldnt really suggest watching the movie unless you have nothing else to do or watch
