The Outwaters Reviews

Mar 1, 2025

Sorry excuse for a movie. You can’t really call it a movie with no dialogue, ridiculous. Almost 2 looooong hours of watching the camera roll with nothing happening, and nobody talking. Some critics say it was very boring until it gets chaotic, and it does get chaotic, but a completely unreadable mess and even when the gore happens, you can’t see ANYTHING And AGAIN nobody TALKS it’s a silent film basically. It could have been a good one but there’s no story here. Ridiculous

Don’t even waste your time! This was THE WORST movie I’ve ever seen and I have watched some real stinkers! Nearly everything that happened was through a tiny flashlight beam and you could barely see anything. The plot: barely there. Horror: blood & SH that’s it. I want my hour and 45 minutes back!

one of the worst movies I've ever seen, and I gave Skinamarink 5 stars. don't @ me.

There is nothing original on display here, and none of the elements brought forth work into one another, making it an incredibly frustrating and unfocused mess. There is talent buried in here, too bad it's buried under indiscernible garbled detritus.

This movie was the biggest waste of time in my whole life. Made no sense at all. How is it 75% on here.

Skipped the first 50 minutes until something happened. Watched it for 10 minutes and then read online what happens at the end

I made an account just to write a review for this film. This is what happens if you give a film student 6 hits of acid and tell him to make a film about a dream he had once. What's the story about? Well it starts off about a group of friends helping a girl make a music video i think? What happens? That's harder to figure out than the camera man's sexuality. Is there a biblical theme? Maybe. Is there a monster? Maybe. Are they on a restricted government testing zone? Maybe. It's hard to tell if the camerawork was just bad, or there was a deliberate attempt to frustrate the audience. I fought an attempt to turn off the movie multiple times in hopes that there would be clarity or some sort of payoff at the end, to which I was sorely disappointed. The convoluted story is one thing, and I could get past that if it wasn't mixed with just completely terrible camerawork...I cannot overstate how frustrating the camera work is.

I almost gave up on this movie within the first hour. Shaky found footage, incredibly dislikable characters, pretentiously bad indie pop playing constantly in the background, and seemingly nothing of consequence happening. Then things got weird, I mean really weird! Anyone who needs a traditional plot won’t be satisfied, but if Lovecraftian cosmic horror heavy on mood and atmosphere is your thing, your patience with the first hour will be rewarded handsomely. Plenty of psychedelic strangeness with shocking gore as well. Look for Kim Newman’s excellent review for more.

Made no sense and was a horrible waste of time. About a quarter of the way in I started to get a bad feeling about this movie. I watched to the end hoping there would be a point or something in the way of an explanation, but no. Very disappointing.

This movie was not even weird, but the music was bad and it was boring as hell. Most of the horror sequences are shot with a little flashlight beam, but nothing scary ever comes in the frame. Don’t let people gas light you into thinking this is good or scary. It’s not. And I want my time back. I think the reviewer on polygon dot com is kind of a “blood person”, Austen Goslin has this review system where they give 50% of the score to gore and 50% to scariness. According to them this was the second scariest movie of 2023, but according to me it’s the most pointless and stupid. It’s kinda silly because only between 4 and 12 percent of people find blood scary according to DSM and another recent 2014 study that will pop up when you search haemophobia. It’s a good data point because this entire movie is just wet red paint on skin, which for me, and about 85 to 95 percent of people, is not even slightly scary. It’s literally Less scary than getting a nose bleed, especially at work.

Snooze fest student film. Don’t waste your time. Some decent cinematography but not much else I’d compliment.

"The Outwaters" with a creepiness to it's opening as we get to listen to a playback of an emergency call, the story quickly falls away afterwards as it proceed into what felt like a very long 30 minutes to get to anything partly interesting. The loopy downfall into insanity, strange goings-ons & violence would've been more well received if it didn't take so long get interesting. The style of found footage here is nauseating, it doesn't allow much to be seen & has an urgency to it that lacks tension. While I liked the performances, I cared very little for what was happening & for the characters, where it came to the point that the end credits did a better job at building the characters just by showing photographs of them.

Well... that was just bonkers! 'The Outwaters' is a 'found footage' movie centred around alien horror. One of the goriest and most confronting movies I've seen in a while. Several disturbing scenes, some of which may linger for a while after you finish the movie; for example the 'birthing' scene... and boys, there is a 'cross your legs' scene... My biggest issue with this movie was it was at least 20 minutes too long.... this movie would have been more intense at 90 minutes or less. There is a lengthy 'character development / introduction phase... after 20 minutes, I got bored and fast forwarded to 35 minutes, at which point things started to get very exciting. I should say the second half made up for the slow start, although there were some pretty twisted and 'trippy' moments you had to navigate through. A difficult movie to recommend given how twisted it is, but for found footage and alien horror fans, it's worth a crack... and remember, if you get bored with the start, just fast forward to about 30 minutes where it starts to get interesting.

The suggestion of some horrific event in a harrowing replay of a 911 call is the only thing compelling in the rather dull first half of The Outwaters. After that, all hell breaks loose, literally, and things become genuinely terrifying for a few minutes during the film’s midpoint as four individuals experience some truly creepy occurrences. Then, unfortunately, the film descends into gory and seriously unpleasant incomprehensibility. Much of the subsequent carnage is barely perceptible (thankfully!) in half-light through a very narrow flashlight’s beam. This effect becomes increasingly tiresome after a while and then, just plain exhausting. RT regulars note: beware of the (too) numerous oddly positive Tomatometer reviews for so many undeserving horror films on the site—critics are often very forgiving of low budget efforts and have peculiarly low standards for yet-to-be-established directors.

2023's 'The Outwaters' is another found footage movie which has rightly or wrongly been ignored. SYNOPSIS: 'Four travelers encounter menacing phenomena while camping in a remote stretch of the Mojave Desert.' For me found footage movies can go one way or another. Unfortunately, this one goes totally the wrong way even though it has so much potential. The first issue is this film takes an absolute age to get going and then, secondly, when it does get going you can barely see anything. Did someone forget that night vision existed? Story wise it's also a bit haphazard with the jumping around between different footage and each person making it almost impossible to follow. It's just jumbled carnage. And because of all of this it's just not scary. It's just a gory mess. The overall slow pacing and intentionally abstract visuals lead to an extremely frustrating experience. It's not worth it's run time. Use the time better doing something else. Literally anything else. 4/10

Terrible made. The protagonist kept shooting the camera and light to the face of all people, in a awful closeup, except when it is really needed suddenly he stoped. A completely waste of time

I wish I could take the makers of this film to court and sue them for the wasted life i spent watching this pants!

If Everest was climbed "because it was there" then similarly this film will be watched for the same reason but really it is the biggest waste of cinematic time and effort imaginable. I guess it depends on what rocks your boat but having someone walking about with a torch while someone screams in the background for an hour until we get a glimpse of a monster for a couple of minutes then this is your thing. For me it was a case of less is less and could have only have been saved by the appearance of some grotesque figure in the denouement in the daylight but as it is we have some guy wandering around with what appears to be his guts hanging out in a self-inflicted act in the aftermath of what happened to his friends an event which did have some cinematic impact. Did the production team actually sit through it and after an hour of the same scene could someone not have pointed that out. A monster disappointment.
