The Owners Reviews

While The Owners is not a bad movie, it is not one that I can recommend. Beyond the cool, sensational, prurient violent factor, it fails to create a seamless story that resonates on a clear, deep level.

The Owners is a strange oddity, curiously unhinged but entirely forgettable.

You never know what’s going on behind closed doors, The Owners tells its audience and, for your own sake, you really don’t want to find out.

The film, with all its scares, more or less cuts a fine figure. [Full review in Spanish]

The movie takes itself too seriously to make the formula work.

Based on the French graphic novel Une Nuit de Pleine Lune, Julius Berg's home-invasion horror transplants the action to rural England with depressingly familiar results.

Let's hope Sylvester McCoy and Rita Tushingham had a good time shooting The Owners. [Full review in Spanish]

Williams and her contemporaries are excellent. The senior actors do, however, steal the show. It's lovely to see both having such a disreputably good time.

There's only so much of Maisie Williams waving a frying pan around in smoky darkness that any viewer can handle.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Feb 23, 2021

The Owners is fairly relentless in its grim tone which will likely limit its audience, despite the draw of the lead cast and the effectiveness of the shocks.

Berg, who has worked mostly in French 온라인카지노추천 and makes his feature debut here, has a knack for ratcheting up suspense and finessing the technicalities in order to maximise the creepiness.

A horror/thriller in the "youth vs. elderly" mould, but much more original and unusual than it first appears. A French team and British cast provide a strong pedigree, and an eccentric film for offbeat genre fans.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Feb 13, 2021

The script's surprises are logical as are the character's actions, lending a degree of realism to the horror that makes it all the more effective.

After showing great promise as a cat-and-mouse home invasion caper, the result is a tad muddled and a damp squib, but by no means a disaster.

Proof that the elderly aren't as frail and infirm as they would like you to think, The Owners offers a new perspective on the home invasion gone wrong story.

.. if you're in the mood for some light-weight unpleasantness, some down-and-dirty box knife-wielding type of misery, then maybe The Owners is exactly what you need. Be forewarned: in a tale like this one, the God of Death gets exactly what it wants.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Oct 20, 2020

From this chaotic clash between different classes and generations, a genre-distorted picture emerges of contemporary Britain where property is in the hands of senior citizens, and the have-nots are forced to keep living with their elders.

[T]he film is little more than a series of violent encounters that feel both familiar and desperate to shock. With no characters to root for and a runtime that feels punishingly long for what it's doing, The Owners is a mean, unpleasant slog.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Oct 19, 2020

Together, McCoy and Williams make The Owners stand out. Newness is a big ask for movies visiting territory this familiar. Two outstanding central performances, however, make a much more reasonable expectation.

| Original Score: 6.5/10 | Oct 14, 2020

There's a larger story to unlock within the vault of this ageist British home invasion thriller that turns a thwarted heist into a mysterious charade between a gang of miscreants and their supposed captives.
