The Party Reviews
Sally Potter's scathing social satire The Party, shot in black and white in three claustrophobic rooms is a gem, and thankfully short given the compression of nerves and tears and emotion.

What The Party does best is to expose your own efforts to interpret, to know, to be aware of what's at stake.

These have significance for each of the scenes and are inseparable from the images. With the exception of a British anthem, the selections are recorded by international artists - arias, ballads, jazz and rhythm and blues, ska, and tango.

At just 71 minutes, this movie is short but never outstays its welcome.

A delightfully nasty piece of work, artfully realized by Potter and delivered with just the right amount of venom by a dedicated cast.

Shot in crisp black and white and running a brisk 71 minutes, this scathing intellectual farce may appear stagy but it positively zings with cinematic energy.

Destined to satisfy those who appreciate live theater the most.

[The Party] features an all-star cast and an engaging, humorous, but also insightful narrative that goes beyond just the protagonists' lives and what they represent socially.

The film is experimental yet highly accessible, abrasive yet embraceable, ferocious yet heartfelt. These contradictions are Potter's comfort zone.

Thank goodness a sharp observer like Potter exists to pull off such a tricky farce with such finely finessed brevity.

I signed up for the cast, was blown away by the brilliantly acerbic script and left gasping for air at the final shot.

It's an hilarious movie, full of quotes to be remembered. [Full Review in Spanish]

You know you're in for it with writer-director Sally Potter's trenchant character slayer when the opening shot is of a frantic Kristin Scott Thomas brandishing a gun.

The dialogue is sparkling... But it's not a strong title for a film festival (Berlin International Film Festival). [Full Review in Spanish]

It packs more dark comedy and satiric jabs in its brief running time than several the usual parlor drama.
| Original Score: 5/5 | Apr 26, 2019
With the action confined to three rooms and a courtyard, it's the razor-sharp dialogue that creates the momentum.

A deliciously bitey satire on bourgeois pretensions, The Party is a hoot from comfortable, upper-middle-class beginning to catastrophic, bitter end.

Like a real shindig, The Party takes a while to settle into a groove - but once the champagne is flowing and the blood hits the floor, it's an absolute blast to laugh with Sally Potter as she mercilessly puts the liberal elite to task.

Patricia Clarkson gives a killer performance...

The Party is a pitch-black, hilarious and satirical comedy with a fantastic cast and Sally Potter's assured filmmaking. Although the film may not have the impact that it could have, The Party was great while it lasted.
