The Planters Reviews
Odd. Quirky. Deliberately stilted at times. Colourfully shot with interesting camera angles. Filled with eccentric characters. Could be set in a couple of different decades. An interesting look at mental health.

A hilarious movie that uses a unique premise and strong comedic elements to win the audience over. A charming movie that knows how to have fun.

[U]npredictable, original, and definitely wacky ... Even if people don't want to think too deeply about the symbolism and metaphors in The Planters, the movie is entertaining for the contrasting performances of [Alexandra] Kotcheff and [Hannah] Leder.

Alexandra Kotcheff and Hannah Leder wrote, directed, starred in, and even did most of the crew work for this intriguing dark comedy, which is better than it has any business being.

This indie movie won't be for everyone but already, I want to watch it again. I think Kotcheff and Leder have a style of their own and I look forward to seeing what else this power-house pair comes up with.

"Sorta, yeah!" is the answer to a lot of questions about The Planters, as it can come after queries like: "Is it funny?" "Is it annoying?" "Is it heartwarming?" "Is it offensive?"

A film with a distinctive sense of style, humor and fun...

This is a considerable accomplishment and I just wish that the end result, The Planters, had proven to be even a sliver as interesting as its backstory.

The Planters is a lovingly crafted film full of genuine wonder and surprise, like finding buried treasure.
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Oct 21, 2020
The Planters sounds absurd and defies genre, but it's incredibly charming.
| Original Score: 5/5 | Oct 12, 2020
Kotcheff and Leder, impressive behind and in front of the camera, believe in their characters and have fun with Sadie's condition without treating mental illness as a laughing matter.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Oct 8, 2020
Alexandra Kotcheff and Hannah Leder's film is an offbeat indie that dazzles in all the right ways. A must-watch labour of love.
| Original Score: 8/10 | Oct 8, 2020
The project is more of a technical challenge for the twosome, who decided four years ago to create a movie on their own, and now they have one. Sort of.

A delightfully dry comedy that brings serious Wes Anderson and Taika Waititi vibes.

"The Planters" represents a stunning feat of auteur announcement.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Aug 3, 2020
The film is packed with hilariously dry comedy, both visual sight gags and dialog that's laced with irony.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 3, 2020
Writing, designing, directing and shooting their feature virtually unassisted, the filmmakers grace the production with keen attention to detail and nuance...

While the more dramatic side of The Planters does not totally gel, when the movie works, it is a slice of delightfully idiosyncratic comedic genius. The cast is terrific, the screenplay is amusing, and the whole affair is immensely rewatchable.
