The Polka King Reviews
It blows my mind that this is scored 27% higher than Nacho Libre, when I was bored to tears watching this weird movie. I did not laugh a single time, and it did not hook me at all.
Amazing polka ponzi scheme based on a true story. Jack Black was incredible in this role, singing many of the songs himself and charming everyone — including us. We absolutely loved this movie. Stellar supporting performances by Jenny Slate and Jason Schwartzman. The zany montage scene of Marla preparing for the Mrs. Pennsylvania pageant was classic.
A funny movie who's greatest strength comes from the performance it's cast. Jack Black brings heart and humour to the lead role in arguably his best performance
That this exists and is based on a true story is something special. That it's JB at the helm, and that it is dryly humoured, make it more so. It's odd, it's not perfect, but it's enjoyable!
Couldn't love it more. Almost like a satire on American culture/exceptionalism and the American dream.
Since I'm from Wilkes-Barre Scranton, I remember this being in the newspapers on a daily basis. Jack Black is fantastic as Jan and seems to have mastered his incomprehensible Polish accent. Obviously it was a Ponzi scheme but no one mentions it too much about the fact that the people who invested in it we're just as greedy as Jan thinking they were going to get 12% on their money when interest rates were around 3%
It's perfectly watchable, mildly captivating even, given that one is curious about how things will unfold. Unfortunately, it also strikes as a bit one-dimensional, devoid of the conflict and mood swings that would make it more interesting as well as more realistic. Prime example of this is that, in the finale, a car accident (which in reality claimed two lives, something that's not even mentioned) and a stabbing take place and we don't get to see either of them. Definitely needed more chops.
The characterisations are really interesting, and sadly only possible because they are based on the real people - they would not be credible within a fictional film because we are so accustomed to the Hollywood profile set.I really liked the film; its funny, uplifting in a quirky way, and amazing because its a true story.
I liked Jack Black's acting. The movie portrays the facts well according to a Jan. 2018 interview by Jan Lewan.
es una biografÃa entretenida pero apresurada araño tomarse muy enserio pero que jack black redime con su carismático protagonista
Once you get past Jack Black's outrageous accent it is kind of an interesting movie to watch. I wasn't familiar with this unbelievable real life story, but thought it made for a reasonable Neftlix film. (First and only viewing - 2/15/2019)
Black and Slate are magnificent in this stranger than fiction tale, and Weaver, (as usual), is a sight to behold. There’s a few missteps, (the tone could be darker in places), but it’s a good film with great performances.
have watched using boxxy software Man I've been waiting for a movie about the Polka dude from Home Alone.
A cool and very positive film about the swindler, who played with his rhetoric on the greed people and earned a lot of money. already saw the second time using boxxy software
This is sad. This man stole from people are didn't get life in prison. How sad he truly didn't learn. He didn't pay the money back so basically got off clear and free.
This epic comedy portrays Jan as a charismatic entertainer who indeed captured the hearts of his fans. The Polka Empire fell, but Jan stands strong till this day! Did you know that he told me he wore costumes that resembled Elvis Presley's? We can't get anymore American than that! He lives his dream till this day!
Fascinating for a one time see to learn about a true story, but it won't be a classic or as good as "Bernie".
