The Prom Reviews

Apr 17, 2025

I can understand the message but the film seems so unbelievably cruel and not really enjoyable at all!

An amazing film! Must watch

Literally awful. What is this? Cringe, unlikable and a very weird concept made by boomers to try and fit in with the gen z demographic. Very out of touch and weird. I love Meryl Streep but why would they put James cordon in this. The songs were awful, and so was most of the acting. The movie was just totally unlikable, and don’t waste your time watching this movie because you’re just gonna wanna shut it off. The fact that it was made in 2020 is the first red flag.

James Corden should not be famous. He is just a piece of trash. Other than that this movie is garbage still. The broadway show is much better than whatever this pile of trash is.

It's good fun, but you need to realy like musicals, and just accept that James Corden can't act, sing or dance. The rest of the cast are entertaining in an unnessary camp way even given the plot of the movie. The younger actors are a lot more believable. But I guess that's not the point. I liked the songs.

Dazzles with spirited enthusiasm in performative embrace as a timely feel-good endeavor, this transition gets affected by tendency exposure over delivered flaws as it moves more under comedic effect including unveiling how familiar the narrative turned out to be modernly with equal provocation, but the message is empathetically solid as nicely concluded. The original stage production is funnier and far less cloying than this.

You can make a musical just about anything. Like, in case of The Prom, a news story. But, I suppose, to make spontaneous breaking into song somewhat more natural they had to add these Broadway actors, who barge into the story in an attempt to generate good publicity. For themselves. So, the musical that is now a movie is not really about a lesbian high schooler struggling for acceptance in Indiana. It's about those actors. And they are insufferable! Over the top, annoying. I kept watching, cringing, trying to figure out what possessed Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, and James Corden to do this. I kept hoping it would get better. It never really did. It just got a couple of tearjerker moments that made me teary and furious, because I felt so manipulated. These great actors had to have seen something in it. I still don't know what.

I love musicals, I love movie musicals. I'm not sure there is any movie musical I could think of that I don't like. I hated this.

On the mile-long list of things the UK needs to apologise for, James Corden is at the top.

It's good to watch if you have nothing better to do.

It is such a shame that James Cordon has to ruin everything because his outrageous overacting is the only weak link in this shiny fell-good escapist musical. Its numbers are akin to those of an onstage musical so it easily transports you back to the magic of the theatre. In many ways some of its numbers (Keegan-Michael Key's ‘We Look to You' and Nicole Kidman's ‘Zazz') serve as love letters to the theatre, so of course it will more of an acquired than everyman taste. Its songs are catchy and fun and its sentiment of hope and love is heart-warming as a troupe of self-obsessed theatre stars swarm into a small conservative Indiana town in support of a high school girl who is being stopped from taking her girlfriend to the prom. The plot has its holes in that most-musicals-do type of way, but its razzle dazzle ultimately outweighs this.

Decent watch, with key highlights being James Corden's performance as well as Meryl Streep. Movie isn't that great, but serves fine as a one time watch.

Over-the-top fun with a great cast and an affirming, if somewhat easily achieved, message.

Despite all of the glitter, glamour as well as the renowned cast, The Prom (2020) fails to become the Oscar contender it aspires to be. The subject matter is definitely worthy of attention, but this movie will probably not stay in your mind for long. An easy movie to watch that is close to deserving a failing grade.

The stage show was edgier with comedy that popped more… however the story remains the same. It’s got a sweet message and wears its heart on its sleeve.

Shot the director this film delivers nothing on any level. with a cast like this the only one that did a good job not making me hate him was james.
