The Quiet Ones Reviews

Feb 11, 2025

Their is enough colorful characters that keeps this film interesting and when the overall story makes sense at the end of the day you get an above average horror thriller.

This movie is absolutely boring! It's as if I've seen it before. The movie is not scary to me at all. There's nothing different or fresh about it. I wouldn't recommend.

There once was a time when the studio was synonymous with classy horror. Then they disappeared. Then they came back. And only a few people really noticed. Their first efforts returning to the genre had mixed success. However, ‘The Quiet Ones’ really is a film that is best left off their C.V. It’s a sort of mixture of ‘found footage’ and possession film. Luckily, the whole film isn’t found footage. It’s *supposedly* based on true events. I haven’t looked into this, but I’m guessing it’s about as true as most films that are allegedly based on true events. A university professor is conducting experiments on a girl who is apparently possessed. He also wants it documented by a student cameraman (hence we have elements of point of view shots thrown in the mix for ‘added scare’). Nothing radical about the premise, but perhaps my biggest gripe was that they tried to set it in the seventies. Seriously… it’s like the film-makers only had access to a sixth form college’s wardrobe department. The ‘costumes’ (and I use that word lightly) are basically the most clichéd seventies outfits I’ve ever seen. In fact, they pretty much look like they could be worn today and no one would really notice. The biggest nod to the seventies are in the haircuts, which are bad. The nerdy cameraman-guy has a clichéd nerdy haircut. The suave rich guy has a clichéd suave rich haircut and the girl just looks like she’s wearing a wig (don’t get me started on the girl – she shows just how ultra decadent she is by constantly waving a cigarette around in one of those long holders they never use any more and wearing mini dresses). Then you have the professor in charge of it all. He too is the most clichéd ‘nutty professor’ type character committed to screen in recent years. It’s unfair to critise the principal cast’s acting abilities, for the dialogue is so stilted and badly-written that even the greatest actors would struggle to breathe life into the words. About the only actress who really brings her character to life is the poor unfortunate girl who’s been possessed and spends her days being tortured by repeated playing of Slade songs and having her arms burned (for what reason I don’t know!). All in all, this is a bad film and – worse – completely unscary. The mish-mash of documentary footage and regular footage adds nothing to the atmosphere which comes across as cheap and nasty at all times. There are twists to the tale, but, by the time they arrive, you probably won’t care much about them anyway. Just best to skip this one.

Decent slow burner. The audio took a lot away from the film. The talking is so quiet while the background noises and screams are extremely loud. Definitely recommend watching with subtitles

I absolutely loved this film. Slow burns with a stellar cast.

Really quite disappointing, just didn't seem to have a purpose

What's so disappointing is the amount of potential this story contained. I was more interested in all of the different romantic tensions and love triangles, and I was hoping the payoff was going to hinge on all of those intertwined emotions. So, in that regard, I was let down. The ending made it seem like, no, it's just some mentally ill guy weaving a delusional story around his homicidal tendencies. Okay, I'll take it... but the other angle would have been so much more enrapturing.

Besides the plot being slow, you either had to turn the tv up to full volume to hear the muffled words or get blasted when the scenes changed. I give this a huge 👎🏽!

The acting was horrible, but if you can get past that this movie is falling apart. You can't get to enjoy any of the characters and nothing is developed correctly.

Really enjoyed it! Against the consensus, by the looks of things! I think people saw 'Hammer' and way over-estimated things The stylisation is typical of similar horror/suspense movies, with their story being based on/inspired by real events There is enough suspense, and there are enough moments of palpable fear, that make this deserving of your time

Terribly annoying. Characters all unlikeable. Way too many jump scares compensating for lack of plot.

Where this is lacking in a cohesive and well thought out story it makes up for with its acting. Jared Harris carries this film with Sam Claflin and the supporting cast close behind. The ground work is there, but the story felt slow and rushed at the same time. All in all, not a bad watch. I wish I liked it more.

very interesting and unusual film where the real paranormal events manifest themselves towards the end, before you really believe that the psychiatrist is crazy and that the cameraman is right (also because in the end he has it), it's very psychological as horror and tries to keep almost always the tension at very high levels without ever a break from the middle onwards. The twists are done very well, said this however does not manage much to scare, it only manages to make you feel a certain empathy towards the mentally ill

What I like the most is there is no for shadowing music, the scares just happen and makes you jump

Fergus Stapleton. This has an interesting premise and a cool 70's vibe. A decent cast and some good locations/atmosphere. It just never really gets going in an effective way with a clunky story, average scares and a cliched back story added in to explain things. Overall an unremarkable horror film worth a look for Harris/Cooke and the 70's setting.

Strange movies but with the low quality horror movies out there, this one is worth watching

Aug 29, 2017

Worth a watch, a quality film, perhaps predictable but the suspense is managed well, a worthy addition to the genre and the Hammer catalogue.

May 28, 2017

O filme tem um monte de referências de filmes de terror da década de 1970 com a adição de várias perspectivas atuais. Só não entendi o que tentaram fazer com tudo isso junto.
