The Raven Reviews

Aug 16, 2024

I feel sorry for the great actors in that absolute mess of film writing. Quite idiotic to have a film depicting fan-fiction and plagiarism, that spent more time terrorising a poet than actually kicking the absolute shite out of the 'rival' character. In effect, the film contradicts itself entirely, especially with the ending scene of Poe declaring the chap as absolutely talentless and unoriginal. I'm sure the amount of effort and time that went into writing that film could have written something better and truly unique instead *shrugs*. Besides that, the actors were great.

Я заснув через 20 хвилин перегляду. Проснувся і вимкнув. Нецікавий фільм. Немає чого сказати гарного. Гарний сон- це найкраще враження від перегляду.

I think it's a good movie. Not a critic so it's not my living. But I'm a legit movie buff. It's worth the watch.

This didn't work, sorry. It would be one thing if it were a fictional detective or author chasing a serial killer who was motivated by Edgar Alan Poe. But this is supposed to be the real Poe? No. I couldn't buy it any point. It just seemed too ridiculous. And the way the kidnapping happened was not any credit to the writer here. They were already on high alert, and they still let that happen? When? It might have worked if they had used a fictional protagonist and made the crimes make more sense.

2013's 'The Raven' was recently on my watchlist. SYNOPSIS: 'Poet and author Edgar Allan Poe is questioned when a serial killer begins committing gruesome murders that seem to be inspired by his stories. Things take a turn when Poe's lover becomes a target.' There's nothing very special here but on the other hand this isn't a bad film. And that's where the issue lies. It's average at best, and therefore many people won't have heard of this. It's a well researched, well acted mystery thriller which ticks all the usual boxes but is so formulaic it hurts. John Cusack, as Poe, delivers a great performance which is mesmeriding at times. But then I realised that in reality this was Cusak just playing a period era Cusack. Odd. Worth a look if you have 2hrs free but go in with low expectations. 6/10

While this was not a great film, it was not a waste of time. I kept watching to see who the killer is and was I surprised!

How can you not love a story by Poe, acted by Cusack?? Maybe it's because I have a dark-humor as well, which makes me kindred spirits with Poe, but I find most of his work completely brilliant. And have grown up in the 80s, John Cusack was in every popular movie at the time. Thus, my love for them both. But this story combines several stories from Poe, with a killer on the loose who is encouraging Poe to spark his writing again with fresh material. It reminded me a bit of the movie, "Misery'. You don't need to have an intricate knowledge of Poe's work to understand, most of these are his top stories, which every has heard from their schooling. Just the hunt for a murderer who is using his short stories to kill, and the police need him to help solve this mystery. In the end (no spoilers) this movie touches on many major emotions, greed, jealousy, subterfuge, love, hate, and above all - how much are you willing to sacrifice, and for what reasons. RECOMMENDATIONS: I LOVED this movie. It held my attention from beginning to end. I don't recommend you watch it once - but twice. It's really good!

The beginning is rather slow and some scenes made me eye roll, but when the movie starts to get going you never truly want it to stop.

Speculative and incoherent blathering amidst bloody splatterings regarding the final days of Edgar Allan Poe, a revisionists dream, no doubt.

Most critics have really panned this film as an absurd piece of worthless cinema. But I was quite surprised to see that this film is much better than what most reviews were saying. For the most part, this gritty mystery thriller is captivating and intriguing. Despite the title, it's got nothing to do with Roger Corman's classic The Raven (1963). It's got atmosphere, disturbing gory scenes and good acting. John Cusack gives a very strong and compelling performance as the legendary Edgar Allan Poe. At his side Luke Evans and Alice Eve are also good. It's also a little character study. I found the plot line to actually be innovative and intriguing, and while it probably is mostly fiction, it's an interesting fictionalized look at Poe's last days of life. And it also blends in a little bit of romance. The only reason why I'm not giving this flick it's three and a half stars is because I did find the ending to be bland and uneven. It deserves way more between three and three and a half stars, because this pic does have things to offer. Overall, I mostly enjoyed The Raven, while it's a bit neglected, I think this was an overall good film. Recommended, especially for genre fans!!

Sorry everybody else, I loved this movie. The historical feel, I love Edgar Allen Poe and how they made him a hero. Good plot too.

It passed the time. Slow at some point but a unique mix of history and horror.

Plays in real history just enough to work. Strong central performance and intriguing case.

A film with continuity errors and John Cusack portraying Edgar Allen Poe wasn't his best work.

Nov 16, 2019

It's a twisty gore fest that has a surprise satirical streak running through it

terrible rating here this movie is great

The Raven has a very interesting premise, but lousy execution. The grisly plot is very slow-paced and, like some of Edgar Allan Poe's work, it's kind of hard to follow. Poe is also not a very sympathetic character, so it's difficult to root for John Cusack in the role. I almost liked this movie. It could have been so much better.

Misled by the given title, the crime thriller is still a treat when it only led to a chain murder mystery with the cliché momentum in thrills - accompanied by further misdirection - and performances, particularly Cusack making a good Edgar Allan Poe. While the vision is nicely-tuned towards the periodic storytelling under decent engagement, its own downfalls are lack of sensible developments and the grisly occurrences that expresses the then appeal for grounded on-street horror literature.
