The Rover Reviews

Apr 15, 2025

Decent movie, great characters and postapocaliptic scenery, kinda brutal,

"You must really love that car, Darling." And I really enjoyed the tension and tone of the movie. I got a kick out of watching it.

Bleak, nihilistic, hopeless. It's all been said before, but I would add this is led by two fine actors at the top of their game. The physicality of their damaged gaits I found particularly engaging. It may be too slow moving for some, as features a lot of contemplation. Not an 'action movie' in terms of Mad Max, but certainly a dramatic post apocolyptic thriller which contains well executed action scenes.

I don't watch a movie like "The Rover" for philosophical reasons. I wanted some post-apocalyptic action. The concept was good but OMG, did it drag. From the very beginning where we see Guy Pearce staring into the distance. And staring. And staring. Then he walks. And walks, And walks. It's like this through the whole movie. Stretching out the banal parts way longer than they need to be. I don't need to see a tap dripping for a full minute to understand there is a leaky faucet. Maybe all that staring, walking, and driving was to make you think about something. Lost on me. I ended up hitting 10-second fast forward about 100 times and it wasn't enough. Skip it for sure.

Definitely recommend this one to movie enthusiasts. It may not be exciting or enjoyable but it's very impactful and well acted, I can't really find a flaw in it! Everything is great, I don't understand the mixed reviews please do try this one out on prime video. Grade: A+

It was a really good movie that keeps your attention throughout. The post apocalyptic setting just adds to the storyline.

Yeah its unforgivingly bleak, but it's also highly derivative of much better post-apocalyptic films.

NEVER (almost) seen a movie so ridiculous in my life! Nothing makes sense, practically zero dialogue, no story WHATSOEVER as it's just about 5 bumbling drifters with no plan or purpose and in the end… NO POINT PR CONCLUSION. Well, I guys there'd had to be some story to have concision and this on had NOTHING. I'd much rather watch a McDonald's commercial, at least I'd get a reaction!

What makes this dystopian movie work despite it's flaws are the performances of Pearce & Pattinson.

The actors are brilliant. But, it feels like an unintentional comedy even though it tries so hard to be gritty and dark. The whole story seems like it's pointless, but at the same time you slowly realize the only point is one deranged character's revenge motive. I guess so he gets to feel like there's a tiny shred of justice in a messed up world? It's definitely watching in my opinion, if you enjoy character driven cinema.

Grim tale in the grim Australian Outback. It should have higher ratings in my opinion.

Feb 3, 2023

Would have given this a much higher rating, but the reason the main character chased down his car was not made clear. Not until reading about it in Wikipedia did I find out WHY he wanted his car. I thought he was burying the kid. Other than that it was really intense & kept my interest.

Ten years after an unspecified global disaster, Eric (Guy Pearce) travels the desolate backroads of rural Australia in a struggle to survive in a bleak and barren landscape. When his car is stolen, he sets off on a mission to recover his property with the assistance of the brother (Robert Pattinson) of one of the thieves. The Rover is an effective but incredibly stark and pensive film, punctuated with brief intervals of sudden violence. Both Pearce and Pattinson do a decent job evoking the required sense of desperation and are aided by a subtle but effective music score and some fine cinematography. The poignant final scene emphasizes the fact that when you live in a world where everything has been taken from you, the small things truly do matter. However, you can't help but wonder why Eric simply didn't ask the car thieves for the contents of the trunk. Surely, under the circumstances, they would have complied, thus avoiding a ton of bloodshed. Just wonderin'.

Harsh road movie in the Australian Outback, which was a bit too silent at times, and certainly violent. But with exceptional acting. What will be most easily remembered is Robert Pattinson's performance, and though the true entertainment aspect wasn't quite there and it was a sci-fi which wasn't really one, as the Outback as it was filmed seemed very present, it was artiscally strong and recomendable for that.

I liked seeing Australian scenery which was very vivid, I found the very alienated mood imparted to be resonant of a feeling I have had and found it validating. I think that such alienation does permeate our world at a certain level. The movie may not be for everyone.

Slow burn, but I like these types of post-apocalyptic movies... I just have to be in the mood for them. Unfortunately I was comfortable lying on my bed and fell asleep while watching. The plot was very simple, Guy Pierce was trying to get his stolen car back from some robbers. And then the ending happened which I could not figure out because there was absolutely no mention or reminiscing of it at the beginning of the movie. So I had to go look it up on the internet lol. Oh well, not a great ending but the journey how he got there was interesting.

Mediocre acting aside from daddy Rob who carries. Very slow with an alright ending

It feels like a kid obsessed with his GTA than a long-winding apocalyptic mambo-jumbo

A good movie, for those who like watching violence.

The actors are captivating in their roles. Everything feels very desperate and like all the hope in the world is gone. Haunting.
