The Royal Hotel Reviews

Apr 1, 2025

This movie was a VERY poor copy / dramatization of "Hotel Coolgardie". Skip this garbage all together and watch the real movie that this was copied from. Another similar outback drama worth watching is "Wake in Fright".

What in the **** was that. What a waste of a good build up to go absolutely no where making little sense.

It’s a gourmet nothing-burger, all the quality ingredients are there but something is missing. Well set and acted with a steady pace and no real holes but... there isn’t much of a plot and nothing really happens for two-thirds of the film other than typical work site bar room behavior, but it’s interesting enough.

I kept waiting for something that never happened.

One of those films that you can tell was written and directed by a woman (in the best way) because it honestly portrays the female experience, which is so rare. I loved the vibe, the uncertainty, the aesthetic. There was one scene in particular that really gave me the creeps. I wanted a little more explanation from the ending (about the more supernatural aspects of the hotel), but it was still an enjoyable watch.

the tension and buildup of this movie was great, as it follows a more realistic pov to what women have to deal with on the daily. if you miss that point then thats a reflection of your own lack of awareness, much like the character Liv. the girls would not have faced any of the harrassment and snide comments they recieved if they had been two male backpackers. however, i did feel like the ending was mediocre. burning the building ruins the realistic setting and also was unnessessary. if Hannah had framed Dolly for it, than that would have been more satisfying. otherwise a good movie, great actors but slightly bad execution.

A story about what women has to face where the law and order deplete. Though the story deviate from the actual events at Coolgardie. It's the most vulnerable female travellers can be and it's a universal need to ensure safety. Through excellent work by the two leads portray what get women in similar precarious situations. Great acting by the supporting cast too. It's a different kind of a horror with desolate background and dusty dry toned visuals disturbs the mind of audience constantly. A rare type of a thriller with a great twist at the end. A story with a message and a bunch of realistic scares.

Oh,my. What could have been.... wasn't.

It’s was artistically shot but the ending was just bad. The theme of how awful men can be to a woman was upheld well. But the fact it ended in a very dramatic way feeds into the idea women are irrational and emotional creatures. Which then what was the point of trying to show how women are unfairly not respected by men, and only thought of as objects for entertainment. It’s just my opinion but I thought this movie stank.

The first half of the movie builds nicely towards something dramatic happening, but then nothing really. It falls away pretty quickly. Little character development, a plot that fades away makes for a rather disappointing effort.

Hour and a half of absolutely nothing happens, nothing happens, in this movie the very end they burn it down that's it, no backstory no murder no scary parts no thrilling Parts absolutely nothing happens one of the worst movie I have ever seen do not waste your time it was terrible

Pretty terrible. A few short moments that could be defined as “thrilling”, but otherwise just really bad and boring. Why is it always the critically acclaimed movies?

This review may contain spoilers. This Australian thriller was written and directed by Kitty Green. The film is about two Canadians who visit Australia but run out of money and take a travel job in a pub in the outback of Australia, where they meet eccentric mates. The opening of the film created the idea that something remarkable was about to happen, but it was just yelling, shouting, and messing around. There is suspense and thriller here, but it is pointless because there is nothing scary. In any case, the film deserves a positive rating because it has a happy conclusion.

I plan to never visit Australia afterwards watching this movie lol great movie though

No character development; barely any rising conflict. Numb climax; no vegemite and a man named teeth. No Four thumbs down - a koala

Quite boring for a "thriller". Considering the reception in the critic reviews, it was the equivalent to being told there's this wonderful art exhibit and then seeing it for yourself and it's a bunch of framed used gift wrap.

It's an emotionally intense watch. I couldn't help but to feel trapped in that town as well. In addition to the excellent acting, the fine details like having to step over a cat on the stairs and Garner having to repeatedly flick a bug away from her arm helped make it feel realistic.

This pretend thriller was utter garbage and just another Australian movie that imports an American actor to give it some appeal. I kept waiting for any suspenseful, thrilling moment but there were none. Hugo Weaving should be embarrassed.
