The Royal Tenenbaums Reviews
On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd have to give The Royal Tenenbaums an Orange. And while I really like this movie, I do have to continually question the choices in casting which leave us with just two female characters. All these other throwaway characters -- Bill Murray, Danny Glover, Luke Wilson, the two grandsons -- could have been anybody. Why did they all have to be men? And of all the characters, why is Gwyneth Paltrow's the most despised? Anjelica Huston could have had a lesbian lover, but then we would have had to replace the only man of color. Oh, the tangled webs we weave when we practice our art in man-powered Hollywood.
An enigmatic movie that is superbly acted, especially Gene Hackman.
I kept waiting for a reason to care about any of the characters and why everyone hates Gwyneth Paltrow
First time I caught this in a cinema, it was with an ex. It was our first proper date. We both loved it. Years later I still find myself revisiting this movie from time to time. It’s still just as enjoyable. Great characters, great acting, fantastic dialogue…
The worst movie I've ever seen. My ex and I seen this in theaters and we lasted longer then most. There was only 1 couple that was left in the theater when we got our stuff and left like so many others.
Acting was good (obviously- great Cast). But it just didn't have the same appeal to me that it did to most others. Not my type of movie, I guess. I thought it was dumb, for the most part.
One of the director's quite good films and definitely a film that I liked for its spine and good flow!
Gorgeous from the first frame, soundtrack on point, and made me feel many different ways. Of all the feelings my fave was joy - like the sequence of “brewing some recklessness into the boys”. Very good blending of sad and funny in a way that isn’t heavy handed on either side.
One of Wes Anderson's best films. The entire cast is wonderful.
By far one of my favorites of Wes Anderson. The deadpan, almost matter-of-fact delivery of each line made moments where emotions were tense really stand through. Fantastic narrative, star-studded cast, witty humor and depth all work together to make this movie truly memorable. The Royal Tenenbaums, written by Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson, as well as directed by Anderson, follows the lives of the eponymous Tenembaum family. The family consists of an adopted daughter (something mentioned repeatedly throughout the film and what turns out to be a major plot catalyst), two complicated sons, an abarrent mother, and an estranged father. Each character is struggling with something, from abandonment to addictions to depression to mourning, to, well, confusing feelings towards a certain family member. These struggles, though internal, are shown to affect the lives of those around the Tenembaums in more ways than one as the viewer a marriage fall apart, an attempted suicide, a psychotic break, a false medical emergency, and a bender. I'd absolutely recommend to anyone, but especially those who like Fantastic Mr. Fox, Whiplash, Beautiful Boy, and Little Miss Sunshine.
Wes Anderson, when he decides - in moments or in movies - to get somewhat serious and slightly dark, makes some of his best scenes. I’ll always be open to a more serious Wes Anderson movie (even though they’re never truly taking themselves seriously).
Much of this has aged terribly, but in the most entertaining way. I find Wes Anderson’s films highly watchable, perhaps you won’t, that’s cool.
I fell asleep. It’s not horrible but quite boring.
Gran desarrollo de cada personaje y como se interconectan.
I love this movie like I LOVE it. Sadly, as a kid raised on the internet, my attention span is quite short and I have trouble watching a movie in one go. But this film enchanted me so much I just had to watch it all through. It is at the same time very real and so whimsical, heavy yet almost fantasy-like. The soundtrack was an absolute banger and it just fitted perfectly with the vibe of the overall movie. I don't know what else to say except this is a perfect movie. (except for the incest)
This is the only Wes Anderson movie I didn't love. It was clearly a genre-defining moment for his directorial style but lacks the heart and charm of his other offerings.
Families have never been more dysfunctional then the Tenenbaums! The three siblings of the Tenenbaum clan are dealing with their own personal baggage, while their irresponsible father tries to reconnect with his children, with mixed results. Wes Anderson places the "D" in dysfunctional while still making the characters likable and charming, proving his skills as a filmmaker!
Not sure I can really write a review since I officially didn't make it through the whole thing. Maybe it gets better but I doubt it. I started watching it because of the box art and thought the cast was spectacular, HAH! Turns out a movie needs more than star power, it needs the characters to actually show emotion and make the plot happen. It's smart and stylish but forgets the humor in the process. Though I lied when I said I wouldn't watch it again, I probably will when I need to fall asleep.
Delightful if overly eccentric film that is buoyed by Gene Hackman's brilliant lead performance. The cast is superb, as with most Wes Anderson movies, with Hackman delivering one of his best lead performances as Royal, a despicable father who inadvertently learns he actually loves his family. Whether it is by teaching his grandchildren to shoplift or splitting flowers at gravesites, his Royal somehow remains charming even when doing some very bad things. Behind the camera, Anderson crafts another eccentric film, with some gorgeous shots and set pieces though it goes a bit too overboard at times (the romance between adopted siblings is a bit much). Overall, a fun watch, especially for one of Hackman's best performances.
