The Settlers Reviews
It is fairly slow and intentionally so...things need to sink in. When the gist hits you, your heart may drop.
Poor story telling, scattered story line.
Fascinating characters, tight direction and a couple of horrifying moments, make this very watchable.
An attractive looking film without a lot of plot.
Wins me over more with cinematography and performances rather than structure / writing, but powerful from multiple angles. Many thoughts for your perusing: - Stunning cinematography (interestingly juxtaposed against subject matter): beautiful sprawling landscapes, the sky looks painted, and each scene is like a haunting still shot - Excellent use of close ups oooooo, especially that mic drop final shot!! - Segundo and Rosa/Kiepja are doing so much while saying very little; such incredible, emotionally charged performances - Really love the “revisionist western” concept and the nods to various forms of exploitation incl film itself. It does not shy away from the truth, so given the subject matter this is very unsettling, disturbing, and violent, both visually and via dialogue - Slow burn is a little too slow, but the ominous score helps keep your attention. The shift to the last chapter felt abrupt and a little late though “Do you want to be a part of this nation???”
Rehasing tired events of man's utter disgust for and lack of any respect or concern for any group seen as beneath or 'primitive' to them. Nothing original or fresh about it, so I'm not sure about the overwhelming positive reviews from critics. Maybe I've just seen enough of these now that they leave me numb or indifferent. The performances are fine, but none of them really grabbed me. Stanley's lieutenant was the right mode for murderous limey bigot. Arancibia the right tone for traitorous butcher. There had to be the eventual scene where the evil kingpin has the secret talk in the dark to be 'real' about what he believed and what he had done; and would continue to have done. But, it was more than competently put together. Director/writer Felipe Gálvez and co-author Girarid spin a good tale that no doubt has a real trail of bloody history in Chile, Argentina and elsewhere on the continent. Cinematography stood out. The miles wide fields and mighty Andes are a regal sight. The close-ups of the ever dirtier, darker faces added to the tone. And the stark looked very stark. 3 stars
I wasn't paying enough attention
Hard to watch but important to see and understand this history. Beautifully filmed. Man's inhumanity to man continues to astound.
An absolute banger of a western. Not only entertaining, but also deeply thought-provoking and thoroughly disturbing.
The film was beautiful to look at and was well acted, but I just couldn't pick out any real theme or message from it. The tension and violence just seemed to lead to... nothing.
Puro wéstern de medio oeste
I don't have a realistic chance to watch this movie😕🧐
Una película interesante en el océano.
Está película contiene una trama que te envuelve desde el momento en que empiezas a verla, habla de la realidad que realmente pudieron haber vivido nuestros antepasados con el robo de tierras siendo eliminados por los terratenientes
Terrific movie about the savagery of colonisation at the "end" of the world.
Les Recomiendo esta Maravillosa Trama
