The Sisters Brothers Reviews

Slow burn and allows you to live in the characters world. I enjoy those type of movies so that is why i rated it so high. Great acting and above average plot. Why cant there be more movies like this instead of generic garbage.

In my opinion this doesn’t fit the “standard” mold for most modern westerns. The brothers seem more like characters transported back in time versus being of the actual period, which opens up quite a few funny and entertaining elements. It is a rock solid story, believable characters, all star cast, and genuinely surprised me in being one of my new fave westerns.

I couldn't figure out if this was supposed to be a comedy that isn't funny or a drama that doesn't take itself seriously. I'm still not sure.

Half star for being set in Oregon. 1 star for Jake Gyllenhaals acting and character, he did great. The other 2 goof balls. The joker and his step brother, what a joke. I set up a rotten tomatoes account just to say this. Awful what movies have turned into these days. Terrible, low budget, no plot film!!!

Really good movie. I won't spoil it, but there is one glaring falsity. Other that, it is a really well-done film.

My spouse and I both liked the movie, storyline and casting. If you like western it's different but entertaining. I'll be recommending it to family and friends...

Really enjoyed the storyline as well as the amazing acting. Overall great western movie with a different twist than others.

Across the unvarying frontier, it takes a worthwhile pondering to differentiate from the frequently seen norms, whether eventful or conversational. Through expected calibers, this western treks similarly but reasons fortunately in the characterized foregrounds whilst finely elevated by the cast's convictions in struggling pathos that may cause dissent in addition to minimal engagement indicated by its pacing. Great actors but the movie doesn't know what it wants to be or how to get there. It feels like it is headed somewhere and then seems as though someone else took over the story and script halfway through and changed it. The ending doesn't even match the story. It took bad because I really wanted to enjoy it. Would have been a much better book.

All of this has been done better in older movies. Too many gross-out scenes, drinking and carousing. Good actors in a forgettable movie.

I dont usually watch movies more than once, if its really good twice. I've seen it four times now and it captivates me each time. This is my top 3 movies of all time, and i think it is number one.

Decent film that took it's time to build but got there in the end. While it's not the best western in modern time it's formidable cast and unique story it is a film I would recommend if you don't get bored easily. Overall I watched it for Joaquin phoenix but it is a above average western but unfortunately the film is ruined by miscasting (Riz Ahmed) and too much of a slow build up. Grade: B+

An excellent western with a unique story. Great acting and costuming.

Maybe the most realistic western ever made. A simple story but I truly beautiful film and, John C Reilly and Joaquin Phoenix make an amusing duo.

A little gem of a western. Audiard's first english movie is a tightly crafted flick with standout performances from Reilly and the underrated Riz Ahmed.

3.5 stars; The movie is called "The Sisters Brothers". And yes, there is no "and" between "Brothers" and "Sisters". That is the Brothers name. After you watch the movie, you can see it has two meanings. Normally, I'm not a big Western movie fan. But when I see a good one, I get thoroughly engrossed in it. I've said before that there is no better moral play than a good Western. It's a little long, 2 hours, but well worth the time spent. It is an 'Adult', with the emphasis on 'Adult', 'Western'. The dialog gets very sophisticated for a Western. The acting is superb. Veteran actors John C Riley, Joaquin Phoenix, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Riz Ahmed are excellent. In all, it's a very long journey to get to a very satisfying End.

Gorgeous on-location shots and excellent production design. A focus on characters lends each of them sufficient development so as to not be a caricature like in many other westerns. The story has an interesting message of redemption, change and greed, but there isn't too much to it, not leaving the viewer with much to consider after or even during the film.

Has some entertaining scenes but overall was disappointed with the lack of a story despite good performances by a star cast.

This is a very atmospheric Western crime drama film, with some potential mild(ish) jump scares. I liked the somewhat menacing, slow drawn out chords played in the background. Its got quite a 'mean and moody' feel to it. The script is quite decent, with some thoughtful dialogue and the characterisation is good too, with John C. Reilly playing the more aloof, introverted one (Eli), while Joaquin Phoenix plays the less subtle, more openly aggressive one (Charlie). Watching the two argue things out makes for a tense and unsettling watch at times, with a definite volatility being present. However, I can't say I was overly convinced by, or otherwise keen on, Jake Gyllenhaal's Western accent (needless to say, this is no Brokeback Mountain) but otherwise its a fine film, with some surprisingly good instances of cinematography and so I'd recommend it.
