The Skeleton Twins Reviews

Mar 16, 2025

"The Skeleton Twins" is a heartfelt and darkly funny exploration of sibling bonds, trauma, and emotional recovery. Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig deliver standout dramatic performances, showcasing a chemistry that makes their characters’ complicated relationship feel authentic and deeply affecting. The film skillfully balances humor and melancholy, using sharp writing and intimate direction to navigate its heavier themes. While its indie sensibilities may not appeal to all, The Skeleton Twins is a moving, well-acted film that finds beauty in life’s messier moments.

Worth a watch but rather depressing in tone. One can feel what the characters are feeling about their lives because of great acting from from Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader. I removed half a point for the depressing aspect of the movie.

Harder and Wiig are credible leads and you care about what happens to them.

10 years old and it’s a pretty good drama by two stars known for their comedic chops Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig of SNL fame play brother and sister; Milo and Maggie haven’t been in touch for 10 years and their father died After they both had experiences contemplating suicide they try their hardest to live again and reconnect They both look why they’re so unhappy and broken from a teacher Milo used to have and an infidelity Maggie is involved in Who else can blow up your life besides family? The title has a double meaning; for one there’s a visual representation of a Halloween decoration two siblings shared as kids and the fact that both of them have secrets hidden away deep inside they can’t share There’s plenty of relatable crises going on here Yet the film does stumble in a few places and the ending almost feels like they ran out of time to make a proper conclusion Fresh, funny, and heartbreaking with depressing subject matter but carried by stellar performances proving that even a smile and a laugh can blossom out of dark troubles A heartfelt character study exploring contemporary anxieties of characters that feel like real people thanks to Craig Johnson’s direction

This movie is so well executed. Does well to create a feel of the 80s. Excellent soundtrack with great performances. Bill Harder and Kristin wiig are an absolute treat together. a true gem and gives that great summer feel.

One of the best films I've seen in a long time. The movie is deep and addresses deep issues. Be warned. This is not a comedy.

The best acting possible and the best blend of humor and crushing sadness.

Laughed my ass off and cried my eyes out. Bill Hader was a powerhouse (as always) and his chemistry with Kristen Wiig was beyond charming. This movie is such a funny yet bleak representation of both sibling relationships and life itself. Loved it ❤️

Absolute horrible energy seems to emit from Hader in this thing. Its like there is some behind the scenes story surrounding the two. wigg may have slighted him on set or ? just feels abysmal to watch, sorry love them both but barf man just suck poop energy, yikes.

A film where humor & pain run along each other throughout. Having that one person that's rode along is crucial. The acting is what made this film special.

I'm crazy in love with this movie and have been since the first time I saw it. It certainly doesn't hurt that I'm pretty much obsessed with both Hader and Wiig, and I have spent many an hour watching their Saturday Night Live appearances on YouTube. Their familiarity and history of performing together is integral here, and they create the most memorable set of movie siblings since Laura Linney and Mark Ruffalo in YOU CAN COUNT ON ME. I watched it again recently, and it actually has improved with age. I love a movie whose genre is debatable - one day it's a comedy in my mind and the next it's a drama with some very funny moments. Whatever you call it, it's dynamite! And the "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" scene is probably my favorite of the decade.

The plot consists of about what you'd expect from an indie dramady, complete with suicide attempts, affairs, quips, pointed observations, and a really messed up family. But boy do Wiig and Hader elevate the material. Their lip sync to "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" is just wonderful.

Tragic and painful. Such hard issues are confronted head on, but not in ways that I thought were constructive. It was more like, "Let's throw as much drama and modern day problems into this and give it a comedic twist". I struggled as it went, but it was certainly impressive performances. Saw on HBO.

Wiig and Hader have incredible chemistry on screen - and as brother and sister, their connection feels genuine. Both of their lives are middle age messes, and their reunion begins by making things worse - but ends in a little more wholeness.

My notes say ‘generally unhappy’ and I’m gonna stick by that.

Touching movie altogether; however, I would have voted for an alternate ending.

A dramedy that tackles a sensitive issue with heart and humour. Hader in particular shines and his chemistry with Wiig is what makes this movie work.

Not a fun movie, but some laughs. The heavy-ish story is good and keeps you watching however.
