The Son Reviews

Apr 11, 2025

I thought it was quite sad but also bring light to the issues of mental health, it was a movie that definitely made me feel something.

This was a zero sum game...if you love your child you'll do the tough love thing or the self-indulgent thing, either keep the son in a horrendous psych ward or let him manipulate you into taking him home. There was a choice...a better psych emvironment. This was poorly vetted, there were other issues than a divorce. This boy was chemically imbalanced and the added drugs only confused matters. What is the message? Sins of the father visited upon the sons? Too manipulative and ultra directed.

This is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I watched it in a theatre and was pretty traumatized when the lights came on. The story is too extreme and I felt like we all deserved a warning before sitting down to watch it. I see the attempt to make a serious film about depression and suicidality, but there was no artistic value or ability to emotionally connect. The ending was simply too extreme. I genuinely think this movie could f**k some ppl up for a few days after watching it, especially individuals with loved one who struggle with mental health. Would not recommend.

As someone who twice attempted suicide and am still falling into long periods of deep depression, I think this movie is hard for most people to watch because it evokes the flat, dark nothingness that we who suffer feel constantly. Imagine living in this movie. I want my family to see it so they might know what hell feels like. It feels like this movie. Hard to watch but harder to live there. For me it hit the mark. I knew exactly when he was going to kill himself. Any suicidal person would.

Could adaptively transition one’s own stage play onto film unveil overlooked flaws, or could the filmic dimension provide additional insight through observative theming? Florian Zeller’s secondary chapter before his acclaimed “The Father” is nowhere near as high, possibly due to connective resonant and relatable distance vice versa for both. Palpable, hard-hitting narrative theming merely functions as an emotional powerhouse that moderately delivers by a prepped cast, with a deceitfully stubborn foundation that doesn’t satisfyingly reason well. this movie really hit me, the acting was great, very real life situations. dealing with mental ilness myself, Nicholas not being able to express his pain in a way his dad would understand was heartbreaking. very deep meaning movie.

"The Son" is a very well-done movie. It is well edited, directed and has great Hans Zimmer music. But the show stopping part of this is the acting. The film does headline 2 Oscars winners and 2 Oscar nominees, but it might be the titular son, played by Zen McGrath, who has the biggest acting load to carry. All of them do pitch perfect performances, there is not a second that I don't believe them. There isn't too much wrong with the movie, but that is mainly due to the fact that there isn't much going on in the film. The only real dumb scene happens from an overheard conversation that feels too forced. But just because a movie lacks bad stuff, doesn't make it good. The main issue with the film is that it is just TOO real and TOO depressing. And I realize, that is what the movie is trying for. But it is not an enjoyable film to watch. It feels like a big budget special episode of an Afterschool Special. Remember, I am not grading the movie by its theme. Absolutely I think this is teaching an important and valuable lesson. I am grading the movie on how it is at telling a compelling narrative with interesting characters and story. By that metric, this movie is just OK. If you are looking for a super depressing movie, maybe you're wanting to test someone to see if they're a robot, then this is the film for you. For me, it was just too real, and too sad.

This is a quiet, subtle, small-scale drama about depression and family conflict. Its setting is just a few rooms in a city, mostly apartments, and its characters can be counted on one hand, but it is nonetheless a very craftily told story with suspense and deep characterization.

I re-watched this film tonight. The first time left me so shocked with so much emotion so it was good to watch it a few years later. Outstanding acting from all and such an accurate and raw portrayal of someone sadly struggling with mental illness The brutal reality that families and loved ones often try their utmost to do all they can and the helplessness they face. A very honest and although painful watch,it raises so much awareness about depression and the desperate consequences that can follow.

Another polarizing movie that if it was a subject in a film comprehension class the majority of the reviewers and the audience would receive non passing grades. I am not a psychiatrist, but unfortunately I have firsthand experience of situations illustrated in the picture. Clinical depression is a deadly disease and suicide is the second leading cause of death for teens and young adults. Between 2007 to 2021 the rate increased 62%. So, the movie addresses an important and worsening problem. I offer these data because many reviewers claimed that the movie exaggerates the situation. Is it handled deftly? I think the excellent cast perform very well. With the exception of Laura Dern, who comes across as a generally good person, most of the other actors interpret characters with good and bad sides. Anthony Hopkins’ grandfather doesn’t eat any human hearts but has very few redeeming traits. The message is conveyed effectively. There are no bloody scenes. Something really bad happens and it affects everybody involved. The survivors are taught a lesson. Unfortunately, a life is lost in the process.

A very realistic dark movie about a father struggling to reconnect with his son who is going through a dark time dealing with his father divorce.

Valuable content about mental health, which is one of the big challenges of our time. A little predictable but with a direct message about a tragedy that can be developing right now in many families around the world.

I enjoyed this film as it was refreshing to see Hugh Jackman play this role for a change of pace. The young actor playing the son kept it real which isn't easy to do, even the small role played by Anthony Hopkins was really good. He appeared as Jackmans dad living in a wealthy manor being served by a chef with duck on the menu. The whole film shows that mental illness can effect anyone & any culture whether there rich or poor. I wont give away to much but it is sad & disturbing subject matter

A few things to know from the get-go: this 'movie' was originally a play; or rather, the third installment in a trilogy. So, technically, it wasn't intended to stand on its own as a whole. (It doesn't!) Also, The Son was written in the French language. IMO, the translation ~ from stage to screen & from its original language ~ both fail pretty miserably. The dialog feels cliche & trite. Zen's affect is either flat or over-acted. Aside from the 2 Hughs' performances, it's just painful to watch Skip it.

This film digs into the hard truth of mental health, generational/family trauma, and shows the struggles of mental health through multiple people. I put this on as something to bide the time while sewing together an outfit I was making. Needless to say, the outfit got 1 run through the sewing machine and will need to be completed another day. I would not recommend it to everyone, there is very triggering/sensitive topics, so please read up on the trigger warnings before watching.

It is a really important topic but I think it doesn’t get too deep to the illness.

Well done to Zen & Hugh for doing their best to portray a father & son trying to communicate the best way they know. Anthony played the asshole father role too well. A powerful, delicate topic! The female actors were terrible and I was very put off by each of them and the scripts they were given. I was screaming at the tv for the parents to listen to the psych ( well acted by Hugh) We knew it would end badly as soon as they dismissed how sick their son was and gave in to his wishes. Heartbreakingly sad ending.

this film genuinely believes that there was nothing anyone could have done to avoid it’s conclusion, when there was literally so much that could have been done. this is irresponsible, offensive and disrespectful. one of the few movies that i hope nobody watches. angers and saddens me that this was able to be made, without significant hesitation, in 2022.

It is not a great movie, but it does tackle an issue that needs to be addressed. My problem is the parents. They act clueless and assume there had to be trauma. I don't believe parents would be that ignorant today. I do like how it exposes self absorbed parents who put work and everything else in front of their families. That is a problem that also needs to be addressed. Not a terrible movie, but not great. I thought the teen actor did a great job.

Tough and hard familiar drama that could have benefited from a better casting in the role of the son; someone more convincing ot that at least knew how to act
