This documentary will win over those unfamiliar with Sparks as well as providing plenty of pleasure for the band’s many fans.

With a few tweaks, there is a strong movie in here. I just wish that some of the writing didn’t feel as flat and that there was a strong demographic group for the film.

In The Sparks Brothers, master storyteller Edgar Wright introduces us to Sparks, crafting a documentary that’s as captivating, cool and ironic as the pop-rock duo itself.
| Original Score: 4.5/5 | Sep 18, 2023
It's good to hear their story both from their own mouths and that of a Greek chorus of associates and, less illuminatingly, admirers.

What this film does have is lots of passion and affection for its subject. The Boss sang “You can’t start a fire without a spark”. The Sparks Brothers is likely to start that fire for a new generation of fans thanks to Edgar Wright.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Nov 12, 2022
Leave it to Edgar Wright, one of today's most unique and electric directors, to bring a true music story to the screen that defies clichés and instead serves as a celebration of long-lasting talent and collaborative harmony.

An imaginative documentary, the brothers Mael are interviewed and they take it in stride, capturing the Sparks spirit. [Full review in Spanish]

The affectionate tone is perfectly in keeping with Wright, a filmmaker who got his break making a show chock-full of Star Wars references. The Sparks Brothers proves that his passion is an asset rather than a hindrance.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Mar 3, 2022
Wright delves into the Maels' life and career, cracking and peeling away at the enigmatic shell to get at the good stuff inside.
| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Feb 12, 2022
Wright appears to be their biggest fan with a keen understanding of the Sparks brand and the perfect collaborative spirit to let their eccentric personalities shine.

Their speeches are as brilliant as their song lyrics. [Full review in Spanish]

...while undisciplined, Wright's film cements the band's reputation, and may well attract some new fans...
| Original Score: 3/5 | Nov 16, 2021
Despite the hackneyed technique, Edgar Wright's film... has the main duo's charisma and strange humor in its favor. [Full review in Spanish]

Funny, informative, and holistic to a fault - Edgar Wright has no angle other than fanboy gushing - but you will love learning about Sparks (had you not yet been lucky enough to know them already).

Hot Fuzz filmmaker Edgar Wright's sublime doc The Sparks Brothers serves as a gleeful crash course on the underappreciated experimental pop band Sparks and what made their music so revolutionary (at times, to the mainstream chagrin).

Like all the best music recs, this one comes without even a speck of snobbery. It's genuine, head-over-heels, geeked-out generosity.
| Aug 27, 2021
Wright's predilection for rhythmic editing and silly asides translate effortlessly into the documentary format, perfectly complimenting the Maels' unique brand of humour.
| Original Score: 9/10 | Aug 23, 2021
This film is a gift for Sparks fans. But while I like one or two of their songs, I couldn't take a whole album. The biographical sections and interviews with Russ and Ron were engaging.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 6, 2021
It's the kind of film that makes us want to revisit Sparks' nearly 300 songs and just get lost in them all over again.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 6, 2021
Sweeping and energetic, no band could hope for a better documentary than this.
