The Stand In Reviews
Pleasant surprise! This was a fun and funny flick with some great cameos and Drew! I loved both of her characters. Solid humor.
Really terrible - not what I'd expect from Drew Barrymore
So awkward, really everything about this is so rushed, poorly executed and super, super awkward. Usually lover Drew Barrymore so I tried this despite the horrific reviews. Trust the horrifying reviews-super, super, bad.
Oh dear God, this was horrifically awful. I wasted 35 minutes of my life, painfully watching this miserable movie and hoping that it would get better, but it didn't. And I couldn't spend any more time on it. Nooooo thank you Drew!
I can't believe how silly, lifeless, and insulting, The Stand In was. Even the extras looked lethargic and out of place.
Okay, but not great. It turned out having a bit more depth than the comedic main story.
Honestly not a terrible idea 2.4
It's safe to say that Jaime Babbit is one of the worst mainstream directors in Hollywood! Every single movie she directed sucked!! And she's still getting paid to make this kind of shit?! Sign me up! I'd be more than happy to take a shit on any idiot willing to watch the same trite being dished out from Hollywood!
Decent watch at best, probably won't watch again, and can't recommend. This is an interesting twist on the substitution trope, but it uses two awful people on both sides. It really feels like a movie made for actors and it is supposed to shine a light on the perception of a person and the reality of a person. Even starting with a down on her luck, kind, nobody shows how she can grow into a monster just like any other person with a taste of power. Maybe it just changes who the victim is. Once that becomes apparent, it's just sort of "How far are they going to push it?".
I was so excited to see this one. It looked so fun and dumb from the ads, and I was fully expecting to have a good time. I turned this one off pretty early. My husband and I noticed there is a dark realness Drew is bringing to Candy Black in this, and the whole tone is sad. Normally, you'd compliment an actress for bringing her realness into comedy, but maybe it's that the premise is campy, and the characters are campy, but there's a real river of Drew Barrymore's past running through it? I'm sorry, Drew. I have too much empathy for you as a woman to get through this one. I still love you, though.
Adding a star for effort for everyone who obviously worked hard on this. I liked the realistic portrayal of the artifice of celebrity culture, social media, and culture in general, viewed through the lens of celebrities and those who surround them, with the emptiness of modern values demonstrated nicely by the choice Candy's agent's makes at a crucial point in Candy's life. As a treatment of values that need to be examined, it deserves much credit.
Que porqueria A Drew le salían machos sapos por la boca.
Worst film I’ve seen in 2021. Drew is ok as the stand-in, terrible as the actress, feels out of place in NewYork, thematically doesn’t fly (fame and money destroys the soul) and the screenplay is neither funny nor poignant. I didn’t even mention that the feasibility of the premise is ludicrous....
I grew up watching Drew Barrymore movies & as with a lot of Adam Sandler's latest films, along with owning their own production companies & being aligned with Netflix, it seems to allow them to make unbelievably terrible films; The Stand In being a prime example. I could deal with her playing dual roles but the dull story line and subject matter was difficult to endure.
I don't think people understood the meaning of the movie, but if you do you know it's great and I think people were wanting more comedy but it was more of a meaningful movie with some comedic scenes!
At first I hated it from the previews. But decided to give it a try. The first couple of scenes seemed promising. I started to like it. Yet, the whole movie seemed stuck in an intro to something of substance that never manifested. It could have worked. That's the painful part. As a concept, sure, I can see this as a movie plot. However, there were so many chances it had to become something more than a shallow flirtation with a real plotline, I was on the edge of my seat for the wrong reason. Like..ok now the real Candy, kicked out of her house, can plot a terrific revenge and Steve is there to help her expose Paula as the fraud she is. Then, real redemption happens when Paula would realize how wrong she was to steal Steve away and find a shred of integrity. Or perhaps, another fork in the road is after doing the first 온라인카지노추천 appearance for the real Candy, Paula and her have a long standing dual life. The intricacies of what that relationship would look like, sharing one personality in the public and perhaps some deeper questions on identity and social-emotional awareness. Instead, Babbit ends the movie flat and dull without introspection other than a plastic comment on how dehumanizing fame can be - ignoring how many celebs have used their platform to change the world for the better. It wasn't even done in a beautiful dark cynical way that would end up as a Leonard Cohen lyric. The movie fell as flat on its face as Paula-as-Candy does into poop. How about a real conversation about something that matters? Dialogue that plucks the heart strings instead of some fortune cookie discarded wrapper that masquerades as the script? I want to file a lawsuit against Jamie Babbit and ask for reparations. But don't pay me money. Just make better movies.
My husband and I really did not understand the scathing reviews. This black comedy is creative, wonderfully acted and makes you think about a life worth living. Look beyond the swearing and drug use at what these characters really want and how phony Hollywood can be. The ending satisfyingly wrapped up a very entertaining movie!!!
While I would not say this is a must watch, I gave this movie an extra half star because I think the overall review for it is a bit harsh. If you like Drew Barrymore, you're likely to get some entertainment. Her acting is solid, and there's some interesting commentary about Hollywood and social media. If you're like me, and you don't mind drier comedies...then you won't mind the fact that there's not a lot of big laughs. The biggest mistake that was made with this movie was how they promoted it in the trailer. It looks like a feel-good movie, and while I wouldn't say it's depressing...it will be a letdown if you're expecting something light and sweet. I also didn't like that the main character (the stand-in) is a terrible character. I would have enjoyed it more if they focused more on the actual actress. While she starts off unlikeable, her character ends up being the heart of the story, but they simply didn't focus on her enough. Instead, we had to follow this awful opportunist who doesn't end up paying for her actions. In these crazy times we live in, I think it's hard for audiences to watch bad people win. All that being said, it's worth a try. The intentions of the movie is enough to overlook some of its flaws.
