The Strangers Reviews
A masterclass in atmospheric horror — a chilling, slow-burn descent into fear that proves less is more. Love.
This movie was one of the most intense I've ever seen. It was terrifying yet so fun to watch. I definitely recommend it for horror and thriller fans!
So haunting with a slow burn terror
Creepy slow burn film that is masterfully shot, acted, and edited
The sounds, the music, so creepy. One of my favorite movies. I was scared of the front door for awhile after watching. I don’t know why the reviews aren’t great. Watch it! You will love it.
"The Strangers," released in 2008 and starring Liv Tyler, presents a chilling scenario where a group of masked intruders terrorizes a couple in a remote home. The premise is intriguing and offers a fresh take on the horror genre, creating a sense of dread that resonates throughout the film. While I appreciated the originality of the concept, the characters themselves felt somewhat underdeveloped and didn't quite reach the level of iconic horror figures. The main antagonist had the potential to become a memorable horror icon, but instead, he fell short, perhaps due to the lack of depth in the character's backstory and motivations. The dynamic with the female characters also contributed to this feeling, making it seem less like a solo killer narrative and more like a generic horror scenario. I found the film enjoyable, though perhaps not groundbreaking. It delivers enough tension and scares to keep viewers engaged, but I wouldn’t classify it as a classic. Unlike horror legends like Freddy Krueger, who combines terror with dark humor, or Michael Myers, whose chilling presence feels all too real, "The Strangers" doesn’t quite create a lasting impression. The characters lack the unique traits that make horror icons memorable, which ultimately limits its impact. In summary, "The Strangers" is worth a watch for horror fans, offering some effective suspense and thrills. However, it may fade from memory over time, with its characters not quite standing the test of time in the horror genre. Still, I recommend giving it a try for an engaging evening of terror.
Not necessarily a bad film, but their is nothing new, imaginative, or engaging with the story or its characters.......the ending however made this film at least memorable.
Re watched last night and I still love it!! The sheer hunting and the music even the darkness of it is amazing!! A million times better than the new version!!
this movie needs more love. From the way it was shot to the intense performances, it is a movie I can't watch alone
The Strangers delivers an unsettling premise that delivers remarkable horror and effectively evokes scares. However, the film’s outcome will likely elicit diverse reactions, with some debating its realism and others yearning for a more satisfying conclusion. Grading: C+
Very suspenseful and creepy. Leaves you feeling disgusted and depressed that this can and does really happen. The characters including the killers are good.
There aren't many slasher flicks with such a low body count as The Strangers. What this film did that many others didn't, was it gave us zero motive for the killers and focused mostly on building the suspense, instead of nonstop action. To an impatient viewer, this slow burn could be read as boring and the plot as pointless, but you'd be missing the point. There's plenty to enjoy here, especially Liv Tyler's performance, the skillful use of setting, and the sound work is stellar. Plus cool masks! The killers came with nothing but masks and a truck. They used their surroundings and stone cold demeanor to enact their terror. This movie added a trend or two to the home invasion subgenre of slashers. I'm not going to call it ground breaking, but it is a well deserved cult classic and worth a watch. I think it's pretty memorable.
This stupid ssa female dog just wanted to die with her weak ass why the fuvk she opened the door for that 🥷 if she was just gonna stay inside when he’s going to get his phone. A real ssa female dog would have went outside with daddy because they were scared out of their genitals, this female dog is just frontin she deserved to die after her 🐱 ssa said no to getting Married. Also did anyone realize that stupid blonde trash of a man left the ice cream outside…!??? No decorum. Bad movie, I was scared out of my ssa and it kept getting interrupted from how angry I was getting each time. Mind you, I’m only 30 minutes in.
The Strangers - 7/10. Bryan Bertino's terrifying "based on a true story" film is one of the best horror movies to come out since 2000, yet, is one that doesn't get as much due as it deserves. Following a couple who get visited by deranged murderers, the movie is a terrifying ordeal which no one wants to ever experience in real life. Its one of those #horror films that seems to understand its premise and bring its viewers in with the simple hook for a story. Its how the director shapes the viewing experience that makes for impactful viewing. Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman pretty much are the only visible characters in the entire film, and its really underrated acting on their part to carry a movie like this. You can feel the terror of them feeling like they're not alone, and you can see how uncomfortable they get as the situation becomes more and more terrifying. We've seen plenty of "real" horror movies, using possible situations that can happen in real life and show them on screen. But what this movie does is immerse you into the whole ordeal. Some people might find the last parts of the film too cliche or whatnot, but I find it as good pay off for the chilling lead up. A superbly underrated film that shows all you need is a good atmosphere and story to make for a good small budget horror film.
It's like a cliche but bad written. They do all the things no one in real life would do and it makes me so sad, cause it would have been a good movie if they didn't make the actors do stupid things. Don't waste your money on it.
Honestly redefined the genre for me. I've seen it a dozen plus times and i will be watching it more. Amazing writing and timing. Scares scare deep. The burlap mask is still one of my all time favorites. Is tamra home?
This movie scared the crap out of me. Loved it.
Severely underrated movie. It's one of those movies that changes genre mid movie. If you didn't know anything about the movie, went in blind. Then you'd be watching the first act of the movie thinking it was a drama about relationship struggles, and then it just so happens that they get a knock on the door, and the movie turns into a tense horror movie. I love that, and think it's brilliant. It's also eerily realistic at times, and it only adds to the horror. Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman is such a cool duo for a movie like this, and I appreciate them being in a slasher because their stardom elevates it to another level. Thank you.
Great start to this movie, but I think the ending is a bit of a downer. The movie had the potential to be terrifying and tense the whole way through, but somewhere in the second act it dropped the ball and I found myself disengaged with the characters and action taking place in front of me. At some point in the film you just ask yourself, "Why?" and so do the victims. The strangers response and one line in the entire film? It made me laugh I thought it was so ridiculous. By the time credits roll, you have several questions that will likely remain unanswered and will wonder how such a scary setup could have such a flop for an ending. I'm sure it's not the best home invasion movie out there, but I wouldn't dissuade anyone from watching it.
