The Survivalist Reviews

While the narrative structure does fumble a bit and the characters needed to be fleshed out more, The Survivalist is a compelling watch that does have something unique to say given it’s genre.

| Original Score: B | Aug 1, 2024

The result is a hugely confident, mostly absorbing blend of psychodrama and apocalyptic Western. It's claustrophobic, bleakly astringent and not for all tastes -- but it marks Fingleton out as a promising new voice.

| Sep 21, 2023

It's an original and stunning debut for writer/director Fingleton.

| Original Score: 4/5 | May 31, 2019

The Survivalist's plot of a man living in a dangerous, post-apocalyptic world after its oil runs out feels deceptively new, but it ends up treading the same ground as countless other films, books and 온라인카지노추천 shows.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Apr 17, 2019

In what could be the feel-bad movie of the year, Fingleton presents a gritty future, where the world's oil supplies are depleted and the population has dwindled.

| Original Score: 6/10 | Apr 9, 2019

Every frame is a loaded gun and its dead fun waiting for it all to go off.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Apr 8, 2019

Anchored in strong performances from all three of the central actors and a filmmaker in great command of his skills, like his characters going back to basics to build a strong foundation for something that will endure.

Strip the zombies from The Walking Dead and you have something akin to Fingleton's world - a place of desperate foraging and deep-seated distrust.

| Original Score: B | Nov 2, 2018

The Survivalist is well done and well produced, but it's a grim tale.

Who knows how it will end, if it will at all. But we do know this: The Survivalist rolls out a uniquely personal vision and makes for a stellar debut by Irish writer-director Stephen Fingleton.

| Original Score: A- | Jun 8, 2017

It's not a fun film, but it is a tensely thrilling one.

| Jun 6, 2017

This deliberately paced post-apocalyptic thriller rewards patience with a character-based approach that gradually builds suspense.

| May 26, 2017

You'll leave completely rapt.

| Original Score: 5/5 | May 22, 2017

Fingleton makes a meal out of complex character drama, raking his audience over the coals with piano-wire tension that leaves you jittery long after the credits roll.

| Original Score: 4.5/5 | May 22, 2017

eerie and masterful ... as riveting as it is morally confounding.

| May 22, 2017

The Survivalist...is as terrific and as suspenseful a post-apocalyptic thriller as any I'll likely see this year.

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | May 19, 2017

Fingleton is largely successful with his tonal and visceral goals, only periodically allowing the ugliness of this story to reach beyond its grasp.

| Original Score: B | May 17, 2017

Impressively lean and rigidly controlled, "The Survivalist" achieves, at times, the primitive allure of a silent movie.

| May 17, 2017

Fingleton's spare, striking debut feature takes a minimalist approach to the post-apocalyptic thriller.

| Original Score: B | May 17, 2017

Both dire and oddly poetic.
