The Taste of Others Reviews

Apr 11, 2024

The JaBac have done it again! Better still, they've actually reached peak form in their writing, interpretation and overall qualities of sharp wit, humour and understanding of human relationships. "Un air de famille" was a step up from "Cuisine et dépendances". This is another step up from "Un air de famille". A must-see!

Jean Pierre Bacri at its best. A wonderful movie and a great critic of the artist underwold. If you have to watch a french movie, ho for this one. Great acting!

This could easily have been 90 minutes if they had trimmed some (or even most) of the exposition from the first act. Things really didn't heat up until the very end of the movie when the bald guy realized that he'd been mistreated and undervalued by the friend group he tried to join. The acting was solid but I had a hard time paying attention to that because this was among the wordiest foreign movies I've ever seen; my eyes were glued to the subtitles the entire time. It wasn't just that there was a lot of dialogue, it was that they seemed to have trimmed the movie not by discarding unnecessary scenes but by discarding every spare moment that would've allowed the scenes to breathe a little bit. I would imagine I'm far from the target audience here and that my viewing experience as a native French speaker would've been better, but from my point of view this is one of the weakest Foreign Language Oscar nominees of its year and among the least-deserving movies to have a 100% on Rottentomatoes.

The Taste of Others isn't a film that is going to change the way you view the world or cause you to reflect inwardly with regards to your relationships with others. It's simply an entertaining movie that deals with a large number of characters, most of whom talk a lot, and their interpersonal relations with other members of the aforementioned large cast. The characters are all likeable, the dialogue is witty, there are some laughs to be had, and the whole thing just leaves you feeling good. It's a French film, so if you're not fluent in French, the subtitles, based on the voluminous amount of talking, are hard to keep up with at times.

A nice comedy that has pokes some friendly barbs at social and class conventions, while being utterly charming.

With characters so approachable and realistic, is difficult not fall for them, feel their struggles and remain entangled in their dramatically funny problems of the heart. Recommended

Great writing and directing by Agnès Jaoui and her husband Jean-Pierre Bacri, And they both perform so well in the film. The film does not have a total story, which may sound weird, but the portray of the characters is incredible - real people living their lives. So real.

Unexciting character study. Their quirks provide some amusing moments but it drags a bit.

The Taste Of Others is a nice litlte french film, well written, well directed & displaying an interesting choice of actors for the cast. It's not a masterpiece but it's likeable & well done.

I have no idea why this movie is rated so high? It's French, it's a romantic comedy but I just don't see what the big deal is?

A warm yet unsentimental romantic comedy about the complexities of attraction. Jaoui takes a lot of pleasure in poking fun at the pretensions of the Parisian art world and cleverly makes the viewer over the course of the film empathise with the pragmatically gruff central character who undergoes a subtle transformation from uncouth philistine to chivalrous poet - of sorts.

Le Goût des Autres, which could well be a scene from real life, tells with subtleties that are openly appreciated and that make us laugh, that behind all skins, human beings are equal. The film is an intellectual critique that satirizes a society still seeking its identity in which the search of happiness remains the biggest challenge.

I've seen this movie like 5 times so far and I'm still enjoying it a lot each time! Funny and touching. Love the storyline developed about Castella/Clara.

La preuve qu'il faut de tout pour faire un monde!! Surtout du respect!!!!!!

Charming, eloquent and genuine. Never seen supporting cast as well as their stories having such effect. Film reminds me of an old and forgotten saying by Budha: ' To understand everything is to forgive everything'

A gentle character-driven film in which nothing much happens. . .oh, it's a French film. Nevermind.
