The Thing Reviews
Okay all these negative critics need to back off. This movie is giving us a good amount of information leading us up to Carpenters classic Thing movie. I enjoyed it especially the special effects/CGI. I mean really how can you not love the creatures the Thing turns into, and how about the way the ending rolls right into Carpenters movie. If you, like me, love watching sci-fi/horror movies then plug this one in, sit back and enjoy them.
Not exactly terrible but doesn't seem to know where to go or what the purpose of the story is. Winstead manages to portray a protagonist with surprising depth considering the material. A very unnecessary film indeed.
Quit freaking killing animals. If you can't make a horror movie without murdering an innocent animal you just suck
As the 1982 iteration further matures into a modern horror classic, this 2011 prequel is still a thoroughly rousing, frozen fright flick with the always awesome Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton!
The cgi was terrible in the later half, the writing was also terrible. It had one good moment when they tried to test everyone, it felt like a True scene from the Thing we love, but overall this movie is sadly a poor attempt at retelling the story. The opening scene is also extremely offputting, corny dialgue with an over the top random earthquake.. how did they get out of that massive hole? what are the odds an earthquake happens right when theyre passing this buried creature? It's bad writing. One thing I did like is that it used some of the enemy types from The Thing video game which is a good game with a better story, but I appreciate the nod to the lore. honestly I never want to watch this again.
Objectively speaking if this was a standalone horror movie it would just be ok. Nothing that particulary broken but nothing good. The editing isn't bad and the plot makes sense. For having such a large cast it does keep them together the majority of the time but it does divide them up every now and than and gets a little confusing. Sometimes kills don't really add much either to the plot. If this was someones first exposure to The Thing movies I can see them being alright with it or if you easily get scared actually being grossed out by this. What makes this terrible is the legacy this carries with it and if your someone that's seen the 1982 remake or even the 51' version there are expectations that come with this and this film invites it. Your literally calling your movie the same title as the 82' version and it's a prequel. What this ends up being is for 99% of the runtime is a quasi backdoor remake of the 82' version. There's nothing new besides the end showing the start of the original. No new theories are explored that are worth anything, no new direction that's worth anything, no characters that match the 82 one...literally nothing. The music is arguably the biggest offense. It's just ok. It's boring, generic, and forgettable besides the theme for the original it pays homage too. The acting isn't good. M.E.W. is ok at best and probably the best thing here character wise but she's no Kurt Russell. Half the time she just rattles off plot expose. The rest of the team besides the camp leader I struggle to remember in the slightest. They all blend in or rattle off plot expose. Something that is a major accomplishment of the 82 one. The cinemaotgraphy isn't good at all. First the direction is just alright at best or subpar at worst. The camerawork is basic, the setting is forgettable, and the lighting is so dark and lifeless you can barely see majority of the time. Than the special effects....Any other film the effects here which are super CGI heavy would just be whatever but compared to the original which as I said this is clearly inviting comparisons too with a direct title copy, is TERRIBLE AND A SLAP IN THE FACE. It looks nowhere near as amazing and is so nticeable it takes oyu out of the expierence completely. With literally nothing that matches or expands on the original thats worth anything it all leads to subpar pacing. I did like the idea the creature can't replicate metal but that's about it. Skip This and watch the 82' Masterpiece or even the 51' cult classic.
Definitely worth a watch. Very much like ALIEN. would I watch it again? Probably later down the line.
it's a good movie, way underrated on RT!!! Great idea to tell the story of what happened before the Carpenter-Movie...with which it should not be compared!!!
Far underrated!! Could have done without some of the CGI & just stuck to practical effects. However, it is a solid, suspenseful, creepy, and fun sci-fi horror movie.
I haven't seen the earlier versions of this movie but at least this wasn't too bad.
The story takes place in the events of the Norwegian camp as seen in John Carpenters The Thing. The story is self explained but seemed unnecessary considering the success of the impact occurred in The Thing. Granted it has CGI and some of the effects that can spur some interest but it doesn't match the same success as John Carpenters vision, the prequel doesn't add anything different or as exciting, even the main female role character mentions why is she doing there when the exhibition crew has everything and staff to pursue the discovery. The fact that majority of the characters arnt exactly Norwegian nor native just divers away from the story. Fans of John Carpenters will likely not see this as close of vision in comparison or even stand alone but it has some feel to it but unnecessary as a prequel.
First, I admit that have never seen the 1982 version of this movie, and perhaps that’s a good thing based on how many other reviewers panned this version because it didn’t live up to the first one. However, I enjoyed it and think it’s great as a stand alone film! As a huge fan of “Aliens” (2nd in series), I noticed quite a few parallels between it and this movie which may have had an impact on how much I liked the movie. I’m a bit of a cynic when it comes to “monster” movies, because the monsters usually aren’t really monstrous, but this one was truly horrifying because it was so realistic and believable! Also, it was action packed and filled with enough shocks that I took a little breather about halfway through. All in all, I feel completely comfortable recommending this to anyone who loved “Aliens” and who loves horror movies. But if you’re a big fan of the 1982 movie, you might be too disappointed to see its strength!
This is a fantastic prequel to one of my favorite horror movies of all time . We get to see what happens at the Norwegian camp. Seeing iconic scenes that show up later in the John Carpenter The Thing. Marco Belatrami score is great and using John Carpenter score. I love this movie so much because of all the setup and some of the scenes from the thing are crazy. 10/10 EPIC FANTASTIC movie that needs to get more love if you love the original The Thing .
Outstanding visual effects but still has no match from the 80's classic. I love also the twist at the end
This movie is fine. Some bad cgi but It pretty much just gives you more The Thing. I would say that most of the characters are great. The ending kind of sucks but It is definitely worth the watch if you like the previous movie.
This is my third watching of the prequel, The Thing, and having not seeing it in a few years, I have to say, THIS WAS A GREAT TIME. I guess everyone has an opinion, but there is way too much unnecessary hate for this movie. Yes, there is CGI, what modern sci-fi movie doesn't use it? I think most people missed the point which is, this alien is able to morph in fantastically morbid ways, and a good way (read: not only way) to do this is with CGI. Sure, I would have enjoyed more practical effects, but this movie does have many, just not as many as the original, which is understood given that the original was filmed in the 1980's. In this prequel they tried to really use their imagination to the fullest to show you the grossest craziest visuals possible, and I believe they delivered. It didn't look bad to me, just looked imaginative and freaky. I immersed myself in the movie and when I did so, fully enjoyed the movie, jumping out of my seat a couple of times, then marveling at the brain that thought of what I just saw. I kept thinking, the critics hated this movie, so I should too right? I guess I have bad taste, cause I really enjoyed this movie and look forward to watching it again in a few years come Halloween. BTW, I have The Thing (1982) on 4K UHD BR and The Thing (2011) on BR. Watched them both back to back. Good times.
While this is not nearly as good as The Thing 1982, it does give a great leadup to its phenomenal predecessor. It is all about the Norwegian group and their finding of the Thing and all events leading to the great transition into The Thing (1982). Doing a movie night in October with the 2 running back to back, cant wait!
Not as good as the original but definitely worth watching if you're looking for a decent monster movie.
The original is better, but this one is really underrated. The only thing holding it back is the CGI
