The Third Wife Reviews
It's good but it's sad
A moving Vietnamese drama that is beautiful but full of despair. The women have no options in life.
A beautiful and tragic drama from Vietnam. Again, this movie premiered in 2018 at TIFF but had its wider release in 2019. This movie is slow, but it's gorgeous and very well-acted. There are so many striking visuals and tons of symbolism. This movie is also very sad and very disturbing. It's about a young teenage girl in 1800s Vietnam becoming the third wife of an older man in hopes to give him a son, and it just gets worse from there. This movie deals with some very heavy subject matter and it certainly isn't for everyone, it can be pretty uncomfortable, but I thought it was great and think it's worth a watch. It's depressing, but very good.
This film has a lot of promise, and it certainly is interesting.. as we follow a 14-year old girl who becomes the third wife of a wealthy landowner in 19th century Vietnam. The photography is terrific here and the performances are good, if understated. I occasionally had trouble telling certain characters apart or understanding which of the children belonged to which wife... but eventually got my bearings in this. As a period piece about a time when women had very few options it has an inherent sadness to it.. and the ending is a bit uncertain, but intentionally so.
"The third Wife" cannot be compared with the beauty of "Raise the Red Lantern", but remains an immersive experience with minimal dialogs and with stunning visuals. This are the kind of films women need, not remakes of "Ghostbusters"!
Beautifully filmed. A bit disjointed
Do you know the actress was 12 years old when she was forced by the director to kiss and touch older ones?
The camera director has used a 13 y.o girl to play in that movie as main actress (Van- The third wife). Its unacceptable.
If you know the main actress was only 13 years old (real age) when she act in those sexuality scenes, will you still feeling ok to watch this movie? YES, a real 13 years old teenager girl in those "make love" scenes.
By using a 13 year old child as a main character with all those adult sexuality acts, this is more like a pornography than a movie. Yes the main actress is only 13 year old. I don't know why ashleigh mayfair (she will not deserves a capitalized name from me) must used a 13, yes thirteen years old child, instead she could use an 18 (adult) or older actress for this film, a film that contains so much adult sexuality acts.
Amazing film for VietNamese Culture, i don't any words for the lead actress TraMy, you acted so good
Exquisitely crafted mood piece; the film is coy like its characters, so take what you will from it, which will be something lasting.
The Third Wife is exceptionally revolutionary, its pace was surprisingly fast but the film was still able to maintain its calm and soothingness, and it is by all means, depressing. I felt like I was sucked into this irrevocable vortex and have nothing to do except for emphatizing for the characters, not only the protagonist but all had their own hardships and unendurable pain. People might be concern about the lead's age, but I do feel like their choice helped stimulate for feelings from the audience and can somewhat accurately portrayed the horrid lives women had to go through back then.
I saw "The Third Wife" at the Toronto Film Festival. An incredibly raw look at the realities of living an unwanted polygamous life. The acting was as stellar as was it's direction. Ash Mayfair's gift of storytelling through silence was something I was not prepared for, coupled with the ambient soundtrack this film is more than deserved of its 100 RT rating.
