The Three Musketeers Reviews

Apr 1, 2025

The first The Three Musketeer movie came out in 1921 it was a French silent film. Ever since then the story adapted into movies time & time again. It's very stylish. Well written dialogue. It has enough action & drama even for the most finicky movie watcher. Sometimes the story does get a little confusing. It does have a stellar cast Orlando Bloom, Luke Evans, Matthew Macfadyen, Milla Jovovich, Milla as Milady De Winter kicks Royal butt. Milla could definitely be put into the action hero category. As usual the villains have the best lines. Out of all the movies made about The Three Musketeers It's not bad for a action, comedy, adventure movie. It's not one of the best. But it's not one of the worst either. This version is watchable.

An entertaining thrill-ride from start to finish! Wow! It was fun and funny! I was smiling or laughing throughout! It had action, adventure, comedy, intrigue, and even romance! Anyone that gave this a low rating is a small-minded, anal-retentive, social outcast! Only the few great-minded and the chosen lovers of pure entertainment could appreciate this masterpiece!

Not even close to the wit of the 70's version. Not even as good as Gene Kelly's. Flying warships hanging from balloons? Balloons had not even been invented in Europe yet. Bad acting, bad plot, bad script. Everytime I even see the movie poster I want to vomit. Ruined a great series of novels for me.

'The Three Musketeers' is a fun time. I must really like this story, given I rated and similarly enjoyed the 1993 version from Stephen Herek and Disney - I even put this one above that one! This 2011 version starts off so strongly, I love the opening few scenes... humour and editing was right up my street. Now, it admittedly doesn't quite keep such a high footing throughout, but all in all I certainly found entertainment with this. For the '93 release I was split on the cast, but for this flick I had a good time watching everyone onscreen. I didn't think Matthew Macfadyen would work in this sorta role but he performs astutely. Ray Stevenson and Luke Evans join Macfadyen in portraying the titular trio, again to positive effect. The famous D'Artagnan is performed by Logan Lerman here and I was impressed - a top performance from someone I hadn't seen much of before, aside from in 'Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief'. As for the rest of the cast, Mads Mikkelsen, Milla Jovovich and Orlando Bloom spearhead the rest well. I will say that Freddie Fox and his character's part of the story didn't interest me as much but Fox is fine. Christoph Waltz is involved alongside Fox and is very forgettable... quite a frustrating use of Waltz's (incredibly high) talents, now I think about it. Elsewhere, James Corden is iffy... and I usually like Corden as an actor. I haven't looked at the average rating as of typing this sentence, but I presume it'll be rather low. It is sometimes easy to spot films that won't have scored well online. As per usual, each to one's own opinion. I personally had a happy experience with this and would definitely rewatch it if the opportunity arose.

You know what Paul W.S. Anderson's interpretation of The Three Musketeers' problem is? It's that despite the steampunk elements, it's actually more faithful to the source material from what I've heard than the more well-known Disney movie from the '90s. What makes this a problem, you ask? It's that the movie worked fine when it was still grounded, in the literal sense of the term, but then a bunch of airships show up which clash with the truer-to-the-text approach. And no, Milady de Winter turning into an adaptational ass-kicker didn't bother me. She's played by Milla Jovovich, what did you expect? Anyway, the 2011 version of Alexandre Dumas' story is okay. It's not as good as the ironically much-less-faithful Disney movie and it runs into some of the usual over-the-top nonsense that also affects the director's Resident Evil movies with Logan Lerman's D'Artagnan being rather bland but it's not some unforgivable travesty. It's visually pleasing, the action sequences are well-choreographed, characters get to have some genuinely amusing witty quotes, the performances from the other actors are decent and Jovovich seems to be having fun playing a character who isn't as deadly serious as Alice. Seeing her pouting when she doesn't get her way was quite the sight. Brings to mind her iconic star-making performance from The Fifth Element where she was allowed to just have fun. It helps that she's not the protagonist and doesn't take up too much screen time so it doesn't come off as the director playing favourites with the actor he's married to, a common accusation thrown his way with regards to the RE film series. Also, how can you truly hate a movie where James Corden is told by our heroes to shut up and in his introduction is forced to sleep outside in the balcony and becomes a victim of bird poop shortly after? I'm probably being too mean but outside of Into the Woods, I always felt that there was something about him that made him an easy target for contempt and mockery. All in all, while the blatant artistic liberties feel like fanfiction intruding on what is otherwise a surprisingly faithful adaptation and I do prefer the Disney version more, Paul W.S. Anderson's Three Musketeers is a decent popcorn-friendly swashbuckler that doesn't take itself too seriously and shows that Anderson can be a decent director when he isn't busy infuriating fans of Capcom IPs. Shame it didn't get a sequel, that ending shot was cool. Then again, the ending shot of RE: Retribution looked great as well but then The Final Chapter happened and you can tell that that was a genuine cinematic disaster when even people who like those films will admit that it missed the mark, big time. So maybe it's for the best we didn't get to see more Orlando Bloom getting a small kick out of being a more moustache-twirling villain-type.

Paul Waste of time S Anderson. 'nuff said. I'll give him 1 bit of praise, and that is: he can make some exciting fight scenes. So that's all he should ever do.

Overall pretty bad if it was based on single performances logan lerman is awful but out done by James corden who is his abysmal self, why he keeps getting parts I'll never understand, he should stick to his niche of make god awful comedy series

This movie is a really good example of a movie that is made to be fun to watch. It might not be realistic or have a lot of CGI, but it is funny and kept me watching, and actually liking it.

A terrible injustice done upon a timeless classic. It's only redeeming quality is the "just enjoy the ride" factor. Whoever approved this film has no place in Hollywood. This film should have never been made...

A very dum guilty pleasure fantasy fantasy film about the three musketeers that is better if you don't take seriously.

Aug 19, 2022

A middle of the road remake that tries to blend some new elements in slow-mo fighting and Jovovich special moves. The cast is capable of much - but the lack of an engaging plot line causes it to peter out.

I think contemporary critics were too busy pooping on this director for his other bad movies to recognize how solid this one was, ignoring direct comparisons to other Musketeer adaptations in order to do so - this was among the best that there's been in large part because they modernized the filmmaking aspects tremendously, especially compared to the '93 & '01 versions that came off significantly worse than the tremendous '73 & '74 adaptations. The use of slow-motion kept the fight scenes interesting and distinct from each other, they gave the Musketeers individual fighting styles by likening them to the elemental forces, Avatar style, and they used their significant budget to put some excellent CGI & gunfighting in there. They chewed through the necessary dialogue scenes without ruining the movie with them, they cast the roles near-impeccably and the music (particularly the first song of the end credits) was great. There is nothing to truly dislike about this film, especially when comparing it to other Musketeer works. Stupendous!

The casting was a good choice, but the execution wasn't. With bland action from director Paul W. S. Anderson and poor plot lines written by actual writers. This version of the classic adaptation shouldn't be your first introduction to the storyline.
