The Turin Horse Reviews

Feb 4, 2025

Probably one of the most incredible films ever made.

Béla Tarr cleverly EXPLOITS the authorial aura of FRIEDRICH NIETZSCHE to create a halo effect, nudging the audience into perceiving nonexistent existential meanings in the 2 HOUR movie, By invoking Nietzsche's name and philosophical ideas at the film's onset, Tarr masterfully MANIPULATES VIEWER expectations, hinting at a profound exploration of human existence. However, beneath its austere, visually striking surface, the movie's narrative is surprisingly straightforward and DEVOID of profound symbolism. Tarr's strategic use of Nietzsche's authorial aura generates a halo effect of intellectual depth, enticing viewers to overanalyze and attribute meaning to the film's repetitive, mundane, and quite bizarre sequences. This clever tactic transforms an otherwise simplistic story into a perceived cinematic masterpiece, replete with complex themes and symbolism.

A hodgepodge mess of a movie, a boring, slow, mess that shoves down your throat scene after scene of a horse, a lady and some potatoes.

Grimly beautiful poetry.

The cinematography is astounding. The textures are great. The patience, the storm. It's like we are living there with them, trying to weather the tempest. What a pessimistic ending though.

If you have any existential depression, then watch and wait for dying.

A powerful movie, for moments I really thought that it was an enduring thing to watch since nothing was happening, you can say I even was bored. The only redeeming factors I could see were the great use of single shot, camera movement, at moments amazingly beautiful frames and a fantastic one song score that perfectly transmit, a sense of unease and tension. But I was having a very bad time, I wasn't enjoying what I was watching, until the movie end where the sensation I experienced was so powerful that looking back the only way this sensation could be felt was to endure what I thought was a dreadful slow pace. Powerful feelings what this movie made me feel. A movie that would be better "enjoyed" at a cinema, away from all possible distractions.

'The Turin Horse' is a film unlike most others. Featuring outstanding photography and impressive direction, the film is a parable, a true gem of modern European cinema, that - above all - bitterly reminds us that sometimes the "tunnel" never ends; light does not always succeed darkness; that, sometimes, continued and utter darkness reigns, on and on, forever.

Pretentious, boring, and bleak.

Every shot in this movie is a piece of art. A must-see.

Bela Tarr y su equipo ofrecen un potente reflejo reflexivo de una suerte de fin de mundo absolutamente alejado de cualquier épica. Música, cinematografía y un monólogo hipnotizantes.

Awesome movie. Explores the troubles that human existence face

Bela Tarr's final film rewards the patient and will infuriate many. In a post-apocalyptic Beckettian landscape blighted by an unremitting gale a father and daughter survive on a diet of boiled potatoes and hard liquor. Their only visitors demand drink and steal water from the well. Their horse stops eating. Tarr records these small events in long monochrome takes, finding interest in the tiniest detail. Testing, occasionally infuriating, but mostly riveting.

The Turin Horse is a fittingly pessimistic end to the career of Bela Tarr whose work has come to be defined by its bleak portrayal of the simple act of living, showcased brilliantly in the unrelenting 150 minutes of The Turin Horse.

Unfortunately the movie runs in a very much slow pace, considering how typical this is for art-foreign films, and not even its amazing visuals and style can help an empty story, especially considering the overall odd direction it takes, making the viewer thinking at first about a profound Nietzsche biopic, in regard of his last days alive, but becoming something else, although interesting at moments, in the end, playing just weird.

On reflection I've moved this film from 3 stars (my immediate reaction) to 9 stars. I mean, that's quite a reappraisal and it's the only time I've ever done this. It's several years since I watched the film but the imagery is ingrained in my head. I can't escape it. It arguably had a more profound effect on me than any film I've ever watched. There's something hypnotic about the way this is filmed that keeps me returning to the darkness in my mind over and over. All I can deduce is that it must be s work of brilliance because I was stupefyingly bored watching it at the time.

I don't think that most people will enjoy this movie, but I loved the slow deliberate pace and that it was black and white. I am not exactly certain what the movie is trying to say. The dressing scenes were strange, but I was transfixed by this film.

Slowly paced, but as beautiful a art film as I've ever seen. CDW
