The Voices Reviews
Somehow never heard of it until a few years ago. I was pretty bowled over (not an intentional pun/play on words), the first time. That was due to surprise that Reynolds played a role like this, long ago, and due to the genre which was somewhat new to me, and due to the thematic material and content. Yet, it was done so extraordinarily well. I love the casting, the cinematography, the voices (haha). No, really, and I need to go check who did the voiceovers for his pets. This is not a movie I expected to be drawn back to, but I was recently. And noticed so much more. It's not for everyone. But I appreciate it.
Funny and well-done in a Ryan Reynolds kind of way, and actually a very interesting portrayal of the desperate agony of insanity. But with RR’s special cynicism layered on so thick, esp near the end, it felt really gross to observe something this deeply horrible in a comic light.
I wish the dialogue wasn't so trashy & bad, a lot of the scenes with the cat were them trying to be edgy & stereotypical. Cats are more loving than dogs, this stigma of cats are evil needs to stop. Overall, what a neat idea for a film, a serial killer who suffers from mental illness & not taking medication, he doesn't want to hurt people but ends up doing so to cope with life & his loneliness, underneath trying to be funny constantly the story/main character is actually really deep & Matt Ryan does a good job playing the calm innocent character.
One of my favorite Ryan Reynolds movies. Gloriously gory, witty, and odd at times. Highly entertaining, definitely keeps you in your seat. Mr Whiskers is an easy. Jesus in the end credits!? Win, win.
I thought this was going to be a funny Ryan Reynolds movie with talking domestic animals but it’s so dark and truly horrific. The worst part is I had a tween watching it with me and he was truly terrified / horrified / disgusted - but we managed to get to the end but really regretted watching it at all. Definitely a turn-off!
I remember this being good. Need a rewatch!
Was mildly amusing to start. Had to use subtitles as audio a bit off, so dint get to read as much as my book as I would have done b.utt. It needed to have more variety and depth. Disappointingly dismal attitude to psychosies. Should have played on actual avenues of this particular subject. Skim-laugh, smegma (I dint laugh) Felt ending was a bit sick. It was no May 33rd. I shoulda scored it lower. 5.4/0. 4.10.24. D.B.
Really great and underrated little movie. That perfectly blends dark humour to a pretty engaging story, and emotional ending . Easily one of Ryan Reynolds's best performances
Loved it, a bit uneven at times and certainly not a comedy. Dark, surreal and oddball. certainly worth a watch.
Visually stunning. The best I've ever seen from Ryan Reynolds.
This was an excellent movie, more of a comedy than a thriller. A young Ryan Reynolds portrays an accidental serial killer which takes a turn with voices from Mr Wiskers or Bosco keep talking to him.
Didn't laugh once. A bad idea that was poorly executed.
Comedy is subjective but this made me laugh. How Ryan Reynold's character goes about doing pretty much everything in this movie is very funny.
At first, the excessive style seems to be compensating for a weak screenplay until you realize it is a calculated effort to distinguish between the main character's perception of his surroundings and their dark reality. Reynolds' performance confirms he's far better than the roles in mediocre comedies he's usually given.
Totally believable as the sometimes good, sometimes evil schizophrenic serial killer, Ryan Reynolds shines with his best performance as an actor. Throw in lots of laugh out loud moments and an eventual realization that this movie is SICK (in a good way) and it adds up to one of the most underrated movies ever. How did I only now hear about this?
Dark comedy with clever visuals manages to make a decent alternative to the traditional halloween film, aided immensely by Ryan Reynold's back and forth performance.
Definitely a departure from Ryan Reynolds usual roles. If free guy became sid 6.7 that is this movie.
Not as much of a dark comedy as it is just dark. The movie's portrayal of schizophrenia tries to make it funny and cute. It's not.
This movie knows what it wants to do, and that is to creep you out. And yeah it does that. It isn't groundbreaking or anything, but Reynolds is a great creepy serial killer. Not REALLY my kind of thing.
This movie, while very watchable, fails to be more the mediocre in all of its elements. It's not particularly funny for what is supposed to be a dark comedy and its horror elements are so light that it doesn't really satisfy that itch either. It's simply an okay movie that is easy watching with a terrible ending.
