Thelma Reviews

Mar 26, 2025

A unique film with supernatural qualities, but somehow still believeable. After mostly being sad, the ending is almost happy.

Very good movie. For those that like fast pace and action, this is not for you. However, the plot payoff is worth it if you can sit through this slow burner of a movie. Is reminiscent of the old 1970s movie Carrie without all the high school stuff but modernized.

Had some potential, but it became tedious. Some interesting cultural issues here with her coming from home school and religious family. Saw on Tubi.

A long and tough watch that will make you uncomfortable, but the pay off is amazing and really moving. Reminded me of Carrie

Multiple interpretations allowed here... is it metaphor or allegory without any actual supernatural components at all? Is it superpower? Somewhere in the middle? A gorgeously shot and captivating film. An interesting tale of becoming. Very well acted by the lead, Eili Harboe.

Very interesting and ---until near the end--- unexpectedly dark drama

Plot has some holes, but quite gripping through to the end.

Yet another superb addition to this already stellar directors growing catalogue of must see movies. As an America I hear so many people complain that "there's nothing new or different" being done in cinema. That it's all just recycled reboots, sequels, and comic book popcorn flicks. I've always made the argument that they just need to do the research and find the good stuff and that it's still out there. Just like music in my opinion has never had what I would call masterpieces in the top 10 songs of the year, movies are the same. I'll always point to Joachim Triers movies if you want something special. Every movie is just flat out perfection and it's nice to see him explore different genres, especially with this one. Maybe because it's fresh in my mind but "The Worst Person in the World" is my favorite I think. I watched that one yesterday and this one today. It just stayed with me long after it was over with it's message and really gave me a lot to think about in regards to my own life. Bravo!

I gave the movie one star for the opening scene, which made it look interesting, but after that it was all downhill. Bored to tears as it dragged on aimlessly. Watching grass grow would be more entertaining.

One of the movies of 2017. A film where everything seems understated but put it all together and you get this fantastic, moody, stylish thriller .

Well executed but lacks plot. The mise-en-scene/acting of this movie is all really good the director does an incredible job, the problem is the plot of this film just isn't really good, and the movie lacks depth. Thematically this is your basic euro-film and it really doesn't expand on any themes or idea. Repressive family, college is a form of liberation, this could have been taken out of the 1980s. The one thing that could possible be interesting is to look at the film as if the parents were in the right trying to protect their daughter and she is the villain of the story, but unless you are an extremely oppressive parent I find this view hard to take. I would highly recommend skipping this movie, I just don't see it as having any thing to really make it worth watching.

This is certainly a relatively sinister film in tone, with the scenes involving a snake being particularly ominous. I thought its quite a mysterious film too although not everything is fully explained by the end. There are one or two sub plots which were intriguing but equally, it was a shame that there were so many loose ends. I think the part that most interested me was watching Thelma suffer from the suspected epileptic fits and her trying to figure out what had happened to her family in the past, which may be clues to her current affliction. I did feel there were perhaps one or two cliches present, in terms of the symbology used and the relationship aspect and I can't say its a film I'd want to watch again but if it sounds of interest, its worth a watch I suppose, yes.

I had to turn it off after the main character started whining about how she thinks she is better than other people but not receiving the appropriate amount of attention for it. Going so far as to say that ‘other girls are uglier than me yet they have friends and boyfriends'. The father in this scene goes on to tell her she is great person. And I just about fell out of my chair. The same father who, just one scene earlier, chewed her out for ‘making fun of people' and thinking she was better than others because she has more knowledge about the world than those who think the earth began 6,000 years ago. So he got on her case for rightfully sneering at misinformation and yet compliments her after airing her perceived superiority over ‘uglier girls'. I'm sorry, but unless the show is going to frame that as hypocritical and use a critical lens, that amount of hypocrisy and ironic prejudice is too much for me to take seriously. Although, the sad thing is, that sort of nonsense is in just about all types of media. And we're meant to sympathize with this girl? Just because she has an lgbtq-esque crush? Give me a break.

Joachim Trier delivers (again!), and it's a much bigger deal than most film fans even realize… It's been five years since this film premiered, and I have to admit I am a bit disappointed…Not in the film or its filmmaker or anyone involved with the film – of course not. A disappointment in my fellow English-speaking, (and if we're being honest: mostly American), fellow film fans…though, perhaps this kind of thing is prove enough that they aren't quite "fans of film" the way they think they are – especially if they can't be bothered to watch foreign/international releases. I don't want to spoil anything for this one. It's best to go in as blind as possible regarding the plot, the "genre," ensemble cast, etc. What I will say is this: If by some miracle there is a person out there reading this review some day who, like yours truly, spends a lot of their own time reading – mostly new or recently published short story collections that are technically in the Horror category but would be more closely categorized as Weird Fiction, (and of course assuming we are in agreement on what those words mean, "weird fiction") – then get ready to enjoy one of the best Weird Fiction films of the 21st century. Full stop.

Dans ce film respectant les codes des films nordiques, la tension y reste permanente malgré quelque lenteurs et fait douter le spectateur entre film psychologique et surnaturel.

amazing development of character as well as this was a good representation of old world view on the LGBTQ community, although the movie was rather slow moving it provided a lot of character building in which a lesbian witch had developed her skills and abilities

This movie is this 🤏 close to being perfect. The performances are all really good, the characters have a lot of heart and realism (even down to tiny details which I really appreciated), and the "horror" is fresh and unique. It's got some coming-of-age mixed with religious horror, no doubt inspired by Carrie. The ending feels really ambiguous, which I generally like, but the ambiguity melts away when the rest of the film is taken into context, problematically leaving us with a villainized gay character whose villainization is intrinsically tied with her gayness. It's a shame because I was loving every second of the movie until the very end. I appreciate the film's desire to leave the ending dark, but we've seen plenty of dark endings for our LGBTQ characters and I think it's time for some more happy ones.
