Them Reviews
Even after watching this many times over the years I still find it genuinly tense. Very simplistic plot, minimal dialogue and not much in the way of character development (hence the short run time) normally, you would feel that is a problem, as the traditional view is we need to care about the characters however this is not a fantasy and the situation is very relatable: we can all imagine ourselves waking up in the middle of the night to a strange noise. The music is sparse but effective and definitely adds to the overall atmosphere of the piece. I think my only disappointment is the picture quality is very poor and when I upgraded this from DVD to blu ray there was no difference in the picture quality. However perhaps this was a choice by the filmmakers to go for a grainy, de saturated and washed out look but watching this film now on a 55" 4K telly it looks like a VHS tape.
A rarely mentioned but pretty entertaining French horror film, Ils is allegedly based on a true story, but I couldn't find any concrete evidence to confirm it. Despite being connected with the French Extreme movement, Ils is a largely bloodless film with no gore or torture porn scenes. Any brutality is hinted at or obscured rather than outright shown, and the majority of the intense scenes are based around anxiety and suspense, as they should be. I found it hard to buy that the villains' actions are those of teenagers, since they appear to have the speed and strength of fully grown, athletic adults, but their motivation does make a kind of twisted sense. The camerawork and score help add to the fear factor, as does the opening scene, which at first appears to be pointless, but its significance comes to light later on. It's a concept I've seen covered better in other films, but for the relatively short time it's on screen, it's more than capable of having you on the edge of your seat.
Fairly tight and creepy French thriller / horror. At only 77 minutes, the perfect little movie if you're strapped for time and you're in the mood for something that's constantly unsettling with no gore. Supposedly based on some true stories or snippets of urban legends. Eerie atmosphere throughout with solid performances by the cast.
Ages 17 and older!!!!!!!!!!! The greatest 01 hour: and 17 minutes ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I watched "Them" while home alone as a teenager for the first time and for years after, I could still remember it vividly. It really gets under your skin and is one of my all time favorites in the home invasion genre. It gets straight to the point, has very little filler and/or needless dialogue, the acting is terrific, score incredible and is incredibly unsettling at times, particularly in the final third. I feel this is a grossly underrated thriller/horror that builds a constant feeling of discomfort and tension slowly in the first half hour, then catapults your heart rate for the remainder of the film. Underrated gem and absolutely worth a watch.
4 and a half out of 5. I know its based on true story apparently, but is maybe a bit short but I think that is what makes it work. It is maybe one of the scariest shorter horror films of all time, with an intensity that rises up to a creepiness that is perfectly chilling. This could have also worked as a found footage film too. A important scarefest.
‘Based on real events' and set in Romania, this is subtitled. I turned it off but then turned it back on because it was only 76 minutes and that was exactly the time I wanted taken up for whatever I put on. I was able to watch this and follow along fairly easily because there wasn't a lot of dialogue and it was driven more by the situation and settings than the dialogue. There have been a few movies like this in the last 10-15 years but I am not sure how many were based on a true story. When reminded at the end that it was a true story and what the outcome was, all you can really think is - ‘well, that was disturbing.' 3 of 5
I don't understand the people who liked this movie. It was actually on of the most boring thrillers I've ever seen. I wish it was a supernatural horror as I thought it would be, it would be at least exciting then.
Not nearly as graphic or disturbing as I was expecting. The film was very good but loses points for the protagonists being so stupid. Twice they had the opportunity to kill one of the antagonists and opted not to. Thats very frustrating and irritating to watch. Otherwise it was a fine movie that had a lot of suspense. The acting was very good as you could really feel the dread they were going through. The cinematography was also great as the 3 locations were perfectly isolated and creepy - a huge huge house, a dark forest and underground tunnels. The plot wasn't unique but was executed very well.
"They wouldn't play with usâ? gives us the exact same chills âbecause you were homeâ? did in The Strangers. With the rise of the delightfully gory New French Extremity movement in horror, Them is a refreshing break from the over the top gore. The film claims to be based on true events and at first, it is hard to establish where this film will go. You will be questioning whether itâ(TM)s a thriller, home invasion or possible slasher. The movie focuses on two main characters, thereâ(TM)s school teacher Clementine and her partner Lucas, who have moved from France to an idyllic home in the Romanian capital. What was supposed to be a romantic night-in in their secluded home turns into a nightmare. When they witness their car being stolen, lights being turned off and the phone lines cut, they realize they are not as secluded as they believed. As the movie is only a little over an hour long, it comes as no surprise that there is little to the plot but is that the directorâ(TM)s motive? Mindless violence by the hands of youths, could that be a statement that mindless violence portrayed by film, tv etc has an impact on some teenagers today?
Them Them (Ils) 2006 is an unsung classic in the home invasion genre. When I first watched this film I was not sure what the "Evil" was until half way through when the main protagonists backed into a hooded assailant in what was probably the most suspenseful scene in modern day horror. The gripping film score by René-Marc Bini only serves to enhance an already suspenseful story of a school teacher attached in her own home by children while her fiancé struggles to protect her as they are cut off from the outside world. Them is complete with themes of isolation as well as misguided trust as in the climax of the film the protagonist puts her faith in the wrong person. Movies like the strangers owe a great debt to " Them" This is easily on my top 20 horror films of the 2000's so far. I hope you all enjoy the film and it's brilliant score as much as I did.
Couple tried to survive in while being attacked in country home. Pretty standard but definitely enjoyed it.
At its best this is a very good and unnervingly scary thriller, especially when the menace is suggested through silence and shadow. What little plot there is - young attractive couple laid siege in their vast country mansion - matters less than what the filmmakers are trying to do: scare their audience! Well acted too, and only 75 minutes long.
Don't waste your time like I did. "Them" aren't scary. Slow, which isn't bad, but there needs to be a payoff. the first 2/3s of the movie wrote a check it couldn't cash.
Them: A French couple living in a remote house in the Romanian forests finds themselves under attack by a mysterious occurrence. This film claims to be based on actual events, and as long as you ignore the nonsensical story in place of the action, you will enjoy. B
Seemed a little strange. The twist at the end was good, but nothing more than the conventional stuck in a house being hunted down approach. Alright for a nighttime scare!
