There's Something Wrong with the Children Reviews

It is a shame Benjamin did not lean further into these more inventive elements, as it would have certainly made for a more distinctive and unusual movie.

| Original Score: 6/10 | Aug 14, 2023

The movie may frustrate the hardcore blood-and-guts audience for taking too long to wind up the plot and not delivering the splatter, but it also isn’t “elevated” enough to tickle the fancy of the A24 dweebs.

Though it doesn’t do anything spectacularly different with its setting, in the end it delivers something amusing and reminiscent of cult B movies.

At times feels like an uncredited remake of Here Comes The Devil and though the kids are good and creepy, Zach Gilford is just not up to the task of matching the dread of realizing how far behind he is playing on this one.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Feb 16, 2023

However, there are too many cheesy jump scares, overbearing "gothic" synthesizer background music, and the worn-out trope of bloody noses that signal bad things to come.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Feb 15, 2023

The drama involving the truth-telling adults is more novel than the changeling shapeshifter children, but the action is exciting and the cast is game. A good accompaniment to last year's Significant Other

| Original Score: 3/5 | Feb 11, 2023

Kind of peters out in the third act, but the first two acts are so strong (with some very interesting things to say about adulthood and parenting) that it's easy to overlook.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Feb 7, 2023

There’s Something Wrong With The Children is a love letter to horror cinema. If you like your horror movies to have a fast-paced plot that still leaves time for scares and character development, then you need to see this film.

Among a strong cast, Wainwright is particularly magnetic...

There's Something Wrong with the Children is boring piffle largely indistinguishable from a dozen other undercooked projects that drop every year. What a pity.

| Original Score: 1/4 | Jan 27, 2023

This slick but very dumb variation on Village of the Damned (complete with glowing eyes) is at once heavy-handed and ridiculous, in a conceptually lazy way suggesting the entire enterprise needed more adult supervision.

| Jan 23, 2023

Sounds like any other creepy kid movie and it does have meet some of the expectations, but there are deeper themes at play. Addresses mental health and flips gender roles.

Resilient shocker reminds us parenthood isn't for the faint of heart.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Jan 20, 2023

There’s something wrong with the children, all right. The filmmakers can’t figure out what to do with them.

| Jan 20, 2023

The ending can feel repetitive and convenient at times, but it's not because the filmmakers couldn't decide how to finish things. It's precisely because their messaging deals with subjects that cannot be finished. Its programming is ingrained in our DNA.

| Original Score: 7/10 | Jan 20, 2023

[A] straightforward creepy children tale that offers nothing new, content to do the tried-and-true but doing it reasonably well.

| Original Score: C | Jan 20, 2023

There's Something Wrong With The Children is an energetic but expected kiddies-gone-killer tale that wades into some murky waters.

| Original Score: 6/10 | Jan 19, 2023

This is one of those rare times you watch a film and the whole time you can understand why the script was so appealing, but it just never got there.

| Original Score: 5/10 | Jan 19, 2023

Director Roxanne Benjamin never allows Children to overstay its welcome, resulting in a scare package worth seeking out.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Jan 18, 2023

Is an unpretentious variation on a horror theme, done right.
