They Remain Reviews
There wasn't much going on at all throughout the whole movie, walking outside, some talking. So little was happening I was like man it has to turn up for the ending.... But no... So just trust me, no
DNF - i thought it started out strong, but nothing kept happening. eventually I got bored & left the room; came back & it was STILL ON. this movie is way too long for it's own good. i won't be watching it again.
The movie never made any sense. Alot of suspense but never any detail as to what is actually happening. Time I will never get back.
It kept seeming like it was just about to get real interesting, but then it never did... I can't really say that I didn't enjoy They Remain, but it was definitely wierd. Weird's fine, the problem is that it never capitalises on that weirdness. Was hoping to see something more from Chidi than plain faced reactions to awkward poetry.
Way too slow, too boring for the first hour... I dozed off in the first fifteen minutes. It doesn't gets much more interesting and the actual premise of the movie never kicks into effect and it never fully embraces the potential craziness. Some really good camera shots and camera work but this maybe could have benefitted from a quicker pace and a shorter runtime and a different ending. All that slow, nicely shot buildup but the end does not justify the means so all it really did was string people along for 100 minutes. 1 of 5
Do not waste your time. Nothing happens in the first 1 hour and 20 minutes of this basic, poor attempt at entertainment.
No climax, no proper ending, no coherent story. This movie is a boring garbage fire. I could wipe my butt with paper and it's a better script.
Not a fan of this movie. I'm not the hugest fan of slow burns but even then, this is a bad slow burn. The story plods along for most of it's 102min run time, very sparingly giving you some interesting tidbits. It makes total sense that this was based on a short story that had no reason to be made into a feature length film. The 2 characters don't have any depth at all. It's not like they used the slow burn to establish a story for the characters, nor does it drum up tension. The one thing I liked a lot was the cinematography... the woods are absolutely gorgeous. Too little happens before a semi-tense ending. In the end, the build up nor they pay off are worth it. I'd recommend skipping this one but if you're a huge fan of slow burns that don't have much depth to them and don't salvage themselves with a great ending, then this may be for you.
One of the finest cinematic treatments of the "weird fiction" genre yet attempted! Beautifully shot, deliberately paced, with fine performances and excellent production values for what I assume was a low budget film, They Remain is a particularly effective cinematic take on the increasingly popular genre of "weird fiction"... sort of a combination of an unfolding mystery narrative overlaid with a patina of supernatural horror that is never explicitly laid out, and is all the more effective for it. Personally, I chalk up all the bqd reviews to the fact that half the people in the world are of below average intelligence. If you appreciated Annihilation, Hereditary, and The Endless, you'll probably find something to love about They Remain.
If you know Laird Barron's work and get the slow creeping dread of cosmic horror, then you should love this, though it doesn't hold many jump out of your seat scares.
It was one of the worst movies I've ever watched. Bad acting, directing, cinematography, scripting. Also it filled over 1/2 of the hour and 40 mins with either still shots of ants crawling on a tree branch of the main character staring off into space looking bewildered. I only post this because now I'll never get that 1:45 mins back in my life. Don't make the mistake I did. Save yourselves!
I don't see how the above critics have jobs. The movie has no plot. No story. No depth. The basis of the story had potential. But there was no follow through. The actors we're very dull and the dialogue was very scripted.
Another film that is beautifully shot, well acted, but only hints at a story or any kind of explanation, and takes all day to make sure you remain mystified. Could have been thirty minutes long and still not been good.
They Remain, based on the short story "--30--" by master horror writer Laird Barron, is a quiet and atmospheric work of creeping psychological horror. This may depend too much on mood and subtlety for viewers who want a slam-bang horror movie, but if you enjoy the slow, menacing creep of dread, and especially characters stuck in a remote natural environment to heighten the sense of paranoia and exposure, you'll love this like I did.
Ninety-five pretentious minutes of nothing. A poor man's The Witch (2015), if you will. Despite a solid effort by William Jackson Harper, They Remain is excrutiatingly dull, with unlikeable characters, crummy cinematography and an annoying, over-used score - so desperate are the film's makers to try and generate tension out of monotony. Painful.
