Thirteen Lives Reviews
So apparently a boys soccer team in Malasaya went cave exploring one day after practice, when a huge typhoon hit unexpectedly. Trapped by the floodwaters, the boys and their coach went deeper into the labyrinth. This is the true story of the incredible international effort to get them out alive. Directed by Ron Howard it's an absolute gem of a watch!
Excellent from start to finish!!
What a great story of courage & survival. Based on the true events of twelve boys & their coach traped in a cave & the amazing rescue that followed, the fact that the divers had to swim underwater for 2500 meters just to get them makes this even more amazing.
More than almost any other movie in recent history, this movie gave me an optimistic view of the power of a community. I would have to go back to "It's a Wonderful Life" (1946) or "The Blob" (1958) to get another movie that competes with its ability to demonstrate the power of a group of people coming together for a common goal. Everybody does their part and it is a real heartwarming true story of so many people giving up their time and resources to help out. Ron Howard has been a mixed bag director. For an example, he directed "The Grinch" in 2000 but then totally redeemed himself directing "a Beautiful Mind" in 2001. Gladly we are getting Ron Howard's directing at its finest in this tense story. With a movie so focused on cave diving, it would be difficult to film the action scenes with much clarity. But Howard does a great job showing the audience where everyone is, where they have to go, and exactly how hard it is to accomplish the goal. There is a sense of claustrophobia in the cave sequences, but I am never visually confused about what is happening. The main negative that holds this back would be the characters. Don't misunderstand, I think that all the actors involved in this are absolutely bringing their A-Game to the roles. There are just so many characters involved and so many sub plots that some of them get mixed up in the shuffle. The movie does an excellent job with tension. The movie communicates what needs to be done and exactly how many different ways the project could fail. And the movie plays the suspense for each one of the ways in a very clever way. A 2-hour 27 minute movie and the entire last hour I was at the edge of my seat. It was like a really good heist movie, but instead of stealing money, they're saving lives. A lot of people came together to help these kids out and pull off a miracle. A lot of people came together to make this movie, and they pulled off a very good film.
Thirteen Lives is a deeply moving film that highlights the incredible true story of the 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue in Thailand. Directed by Ron Howard, the movie focuses on the global effort and teamwork that led to the miraculous rescue of a young soccer team and their coach. The performances by Viggo Mortensen, Colin Farrell, and Joel Edgerton are excellent, portraying the bravery and skill of the divers who risked everything to save the boys. The film is technically outstanding, with gripping underwater scenes and a realistic portrayal of the challenging conditions faced by the rescuers. Howard’s direction keeps the focus on the human element, showing the immense sacrifices and collaboration that made the rescue possible. However, I couldn’t help but feel like something was missing. The movie spends so much time on the rescuers’ perspective that it doesn’t dive deeply into the emotional experiences of the boys and their coach. This lack of focus on their side of the story left me feeling that a key part of the event’s impact was underexplored. Despite this, Thirteen Lives is still a powerful film that captures the resilience and determination of everyone involved in the rescue. It’s a testament to what humanity can achieve when people come together in the face of impossible odds. While it might not fully explore every emotional angle, it’s a well-made and inspiring story that’s worth watching.
Absolutely loved this inspiring movie.. as always Ron Howard delivers!
The incredible power of the human spirit and determination and coming together on full display. It's hard to believe it's a true telling of the story, it seems almost fantastical the way they accomplished the rescue (I look forward to watching the documentary to learn more). The movie couldn't really capture -- and didn't seem concerned with capturing -- the actual intensity on the body and mind of each 6-7 hour dive through a submerged cave. I can't fathom the physical and psychological experience. They could have made this a psychological thriller if they wanted to go there, but instead the swims/dives themselves were presented almost as an afterthought, too rote for the divers, whereas I'm imagining it was at or near the limit of human ability. Or maybe it wasn't. Perhaps the documentary will reveal better.
Great movie, really keeps you on edge throughout.
it seems to me the only people who would watch this terrible and unsensitive movie are reckless people who are amateur/reckless scuba divers like the so called cava scuba divers who only engaged in this reckless rescue because of Notoriety. the sooner this film remains in the trash can the better. one man lost his life for real, and howard is a reckless human being, that fails to understand 200 scuba divers die every year, tearing up families and destroying people's lives, and im one of those persons. scuba diving is for clowns underwater and the sooner ron howard understands this the better, before making trash movies like this.
This is a must see. There's no fluff, it's as true as it gets, and even though I kept up with the news of this constantly when it happened, it's still a good thing to be able to practically witness what happened by watching this recreation. Well done to everyone involved.
I recalled bits and pieces of the true story behind this film, and although I'm a few years late to see this movie, I must say, it is easily one of the best new films I've watched in the last decade. The accuracy and attention to detail from Ron Howard & the screenwriters was outstanding. This is an extremely stressful movie to watch, and it wouldn't have been effective any other way. The acting is great, the replication of the flooding and rescue events was believable and on-point. If you aren't inspired by this film or shed a tear when you watch all of the locals banding together and sacrificing for the good of these boys, then you aren't human. This is truly an inspiration film that tugs at your heart. Well done! 5 stars.
A powerful examination of true heroism. It's surprising how much Ron Howard underplays a lot of this (the movie is never overwrought and it earns the more emotional moments) and I hope he continues to make stuff like this.
It's a very unique film and a faithful recreation of the real event.
Really solid movie overall. Always great to see films based on real events where people get together to show mankind's true potential. This movie depicts that well.
Without all the bells and whistles of your average survival thriller but just as harrowing, Ron Howard's Thirteen Lives does the tremendous heroics of the true story justice.
Very intense and well done. I loved the whole thing!
Thirteen Lives is a "must-see" survival drama directed by Ron Howard. It is based on a story of how an international rescue mission assembled in Thailand to save thirteen members of a soccer team who were trapped inside a system of flooding underground caves.
Keeps you on the edge of your seat! The scenes were the divers are swimming through the tight cave tunnels are INTENSE! Really well done.
I don't think I understood a single word that Viggo was saying! LOL. Buddy was really struggling with that accent and poor Colin tried so very hard to not be Scottish, but aside from the clumsy UK British accents, this film was well done!
