To the Bone Reviews
I find it disheartening to see critic reviews from people who haven’t dealt with this issue first hand. An assumption of knowledge regarding film making and what it should look like is similar to a layman person determining what this sort of illness/addiction looks like. I would say if you don’t know first hand don’t say anything. There is no shame in saying I don’t understand the issue. However, speaking to how it’s portrayed and not knowing shows ignorance and an over grandiose belief in oneself about all things. It is so much worse than what you see. So much harder for those that are close the the people suffering and this is just a tip of the iceberg to make it palatable for people who have no understanding of this.
its a good movie to watch but please listen to the disclaimer at the start of the film i am anorexic and didnt listen to the disclaimer and i had been in recovery for a year and the film influenced me to drop into old habits its very triggering to people with eating disorders but other than that its a great movie with a plot that’s complex and real just watch with caution if you struggle with an ED
This is the first movie I have watched since my addiction began 4 years , my addiction is a drug addiction not an eating disorder but this movie to me resonates to anyone who has or had an addiction and.understands the struggles mentally, emotionally and physically within us every day. Lily Collins showed such a strong and pure performance and Keanu Reeves, stellar and if there is a doctor like his character out there, please send him my way :) Thank you xo
Fascinating but disturbing. Not sure if it realistically depicts anorexia. But I know nothing about the eating disorder and it was nice to learn some new facts. It's really sad how the actress Lily Collins had anorexia on and off, but she had to lose weight for this role. I don't understand why she took on this role in the first place. It can definitely spread the knowledge about the disorder, so that's good. It's fascinating how people have anorexia and starve themselves literally to death. And some of them can seek help, but I can see how there would not be much help offered to them since it's so simple from an outsider's perspective: they just have to eat. The movie had Lily Collins as the main character and her own mother (who became a lesbian and moved out of state) couldn't handle her. Her mom felt like she kept fighting Lily on this disorder. Lily's dad and stepmother took care of her, and the stepmother even fought to get her in-patient care. It was hard to watch the skinny girls try to starve themselves and exercise even more. Lily left the care, and then it ended with her going back in hopes that she will get better. It depicted a long struggle for these folks.
Even when it proved that it's very complicated to make a movie about eating disorders without adding some extra glamour to make it watchable, there's a lot of value in trying with dignity. And they did that.
Beautiful, heartbreaking, sad and optimistic at the same time and last, but not least very realistic. Highly recommend!
Compelling characters.
Not for me, makes me sleepy
This movie was unique, moving and had a brilliant performance by Lily Collins, whom herself struggled with an eating disorder. It was real, fresh and an important area to cover in our current body dysmorphia rampant society. Be forewarned that there could be some disturbing/triggering scenes for those who have ever struggled with or supported anyone who has struggled with an eating disorder.
One of the Best performances I have seen. Lily Collins and Keanu Reeves were were so believable. It shows an illness that is not just destroying females, it is also destroying males and their families and friends. It's so incredibly difficult to get it out of your mind set. Lily portrayed that so well. It was so emotional. If only there were more people out there who wants to help these people get over their illness like Keanu portrayed in the movie. I think this should be played in Health classes across the entire USA. It's to important of a message.
The film brings an important theme to be addressed, but the construction of the story itself is very bad, and sometimes it escapes the main focus.
the baby bottle scene was too much
Absolutly awesome film. The performance of Lily Kolins and Keanu Reeves it's tremendeous, and it can hit you deeper than you can possibly imagine. Absolutely recommended, 10/10.
Although supposedly educational about an eating disorder, this film had major mistakes. Despite women having ten times the numbers of men, this plot included a man as a main character. There are negative reviews for real reasons.
It seemed to deal with respect and seriousness about eating disorders, however, it was still very sugar-coated. Only people who looked like actors and rich at that. It bothered me that some of the Threshold house dwellers didn't have a name or weren't really presented properly. Still, an impactful one and one I would recommend, with those caveats.
Though it felt honest and simple I didn't feel related what so ever. Performances were okay but it was way too uneventful to the point of being boring.
what I think that this movie did best was show how, for the people in the addict / anorexic's circle of support, the healthiest thing that they can often do is to give them space to decide if they want to work on healing themselves, even when that 'giving of space' might produce very painful results in the short term. I like how the doctor emphasized the need to wait until the patient was serious about treatment.
One can only speak to the authenticity so much, but Lily Collins is superb in her performance. The only downside is the male-savior trope from Reeves' character.
