To the Stars Reviews
A very interesting film that makes an impeccable sort of melancholy and bittersweet atmosphere that I have not seen done before. This definitely had a unique and more realistic approach to its writing then I've seen before, especially in it's ending. It also contains a great score and soundtrack. I don't think that To The Stars is the greatest film, but it it's one that I'm glad I saw, and that has stuck with me for quite a while.
Very honest and accurate take on growing up in very rural town. Especially for those that don't fit in and are trying to find themselves.
A really nice story with decent acting performances and a final that will divide opinions. A must watch.
Such an amazing movie. Totally thought the movie was going one way, changed on me, thought it was going another way, flipped again. Soooooo good. So, so good. The movie was missing a good sex scene, and I definitely would have loved more development romantic development on the f/f storyline, but I can't even give less stars because it was so good. I want a sequel, please!!!
Powerful and tough to watch at times, To the Stars is a relatively fresh take on the historical coming-of-age genre.
A touching, entertaining coming of age story about a teenage outcast in 1950s small town Oklahoma who has trouble fitting in until she strikes up a transformative friendship with a newly arrived big city girl. While the film has its share of cliches (especially in the last half hour), it's also chock full of surprises, warmth and incisive humor. Exquisitely filmed in black and white with a fine cast, smart writing and an atmospheric score, this latest offering from director Martha Stephens recalls such releases as "The Last Picture Show" and "Desert Hearts" but with a narrative and sensibilities all its own. It may be a little-known film, but it's definitely a heartwarming charmer, now available on first-run online streaming.
While the story could provide itself a fascinating look into the 1950´s world of complicated female friendships and the danger of being a lesbian in those days, To The Stars never sells that point to full effect.
I can't comment without giving away the story, but a certain encounter was not remotely credible to me, given the decade the story transpires, the Bible belt sensibilities of the place and the 0 to 60 speed of what transpired. As a result, in my opinion, the movie missed an opportunity to build a realistic story line addressing an important coming of age issue.
I had the privilege of seeing the black and white version first when it was doing its round of festivals (including Sundance) and the newly released color version. Both are exquisite in their detail of 1960's life. The story is tender and complicated at the same time and has a richness of characters and their complicated emotions and choices.
I really enjoyed watching this movie. It has a delicate way of bringing together so many emotions and realities of life. When I thought I knew the character a new side would be revealed that keep me in suspense. Great photography, production, and cast! Stop reading reviews and go watch To The Stars.
Decent movie. Awkard characters. Honestly don't know if it was the acting that was mediocre, or if the characters were just supposed to be mediocre human beings.
