Together Reviews

Mar 9, 2025

I thought this was one of the best pieces of television I’ve ever watched. Some comments say it was depressing but it wasn’t going to be a laugh a minute (although there was some great humour at times) and at the time it was originally broadcast, we were still very much feeling the effects of the pandemic. I recorded it and occasionally watch it and although it doesn’t have the same hard hitting impact, it’s thoroughly worth watching and deserves your full attention ie not while playing on your phone or doom scrolling on Facebook. I really enjoyed the way right from the outset, they break the fourth wall and really draw the viewer in. I’m not sure whether this won any awards but it thoroughly deserved to.

Although its inconsistent approach with potentially intriguing examination differentiating slightly, it effectively contributes as a time capsule towards the pandemic lockdown's reality with honest commentary through natural chemistry. (B)

Amazing acting and chemistry between the two main characters. A very graphic depicture of the pandemic and what many people lived during this time.

Sharon Horgan and James McAvoy floored me with darn near every line that came out of their mouths. They delivered brilliant performances of a common couple trying to cope with trauma outside their home and within their hearts. In fact, their performances were so outstanding that they made me wonder, were the actors acting out a script, or just filling in the words of a story with their own thoughts and emotions. Regardless, Horgan and McAvoy harmonized on screen, even while giving solo performances in soul-snatching monologues. To recap, they were just brilliant as was this film in its entirety.

Not everyone's cup of tea but a really good take on the complexity of the COVID pandemic, set against a well acted struggling couple. This will hit close to home for a lot of viewers.

Horgan and McAvoy were very good in their roles. Movie just isn't good outside of a few truthful moments. Most of it felt like a propaganda piece.

Painfully bad. The writing was just constant arguing and complaining, the dialogue reminded me of an awful theatre production, there was too much talking to the camera, the 'humour' was atrocious, the characters were unrealistically juvenile and unlikeable, the pacing was abysmal, the man's accent was overdone, the cinematography was too handheld and full of motion, and the soundtrack was completely forgettable. However, the acting and sets/props/costumes were reasonable.

Together tries too hard to be unique for unique's sake and to provide yet another entry into the world of who can shoot the longest annoying scene without a cut. While technically a challenge, yawn. Who cares. It didn't add to the story. I'm guessing directors Stephen Daldry and Justin Martin are trying to show their film school compatriots just how far they're pushing the envelope. Again, yawn. I'm not sure how I managed to make it all the way through this 1h 32min of nails on a chalkboard given the rapid-fire and unnecessary contemptuous dialogue between two miserable and unlikeable adults. After twenty minutes of this audience abuse, it made me want to eat the poisonous mushrooms. I guess I'm a glutton for punishment and kept watching for some glimmer of purpose to this film, but none is ever revealed. I believe this was simply an effort to show how "artsy" a film about the pandemic experience can be and how "talented" everyone involved was, but did we really want a rewind of what we've all been experiencing since March 2020 under lockdown? This is a film that will lead to the audience asking for that time back.

I really like the style of this movie kinda wish there wasn’t as heavy of accents involved 2.7/5

"Yeah I mean, when you go through something like that, it does bond you…" Okay imagine: you're a couple therapist and your job is, for a couple of months, listen to this couple, a conservative and a liberal, who hate each other's gut and face since before the pandemic. Yeah that's a good summary of what this movie is about. An hour and a half of not having a fourth wall and a couple talking to you nonstop. If you're so sick of the pandemic that having to think about it makes you nauseous and angry, then this ain't the movie for you. However, if you don't have that and love hearing people conversing, this should be an interesting experience on the screen. Also, if you like a movie with amazing dialogues and performances, then like me you will love this conversation. Yeah, this feels more like a conversation than a movie. James McAvoy and Sharon Horgan were phenomenal as the troubling couple. They showed incredible chemistry during all the one-take conversations. It doesn't feel like I'm watching actors acting, but more like normal people complaining about how terrible the lockdown was. The conversations were spiraling. It started from funny then to heartbreaking and then awkward and mixes of all these emotions. When it's sad, it's pretty depressing, and could be relatable to many. However, at the end, the movie became sweet and emphasize its theme of importance of close proximity during the pandemic. My problem was how bizarre some conversations became at the end. Also, I felt a bit overwhelmed at some conversations. It definitely takes a lot of attention and power to listen through all of these, despite how interesting they can get. Overall, a great movie with strong acting and script. 8.5/10

The clear highlight of the film is the duo's performance, both individually and together. Dialogue delivery, the emotion, the writing as well, all based on experiences we've all had in real life (pandemic, quarantine, etc).

Unnecessary, unending, unbearable ramblings that went on from start to mid. Minimal chemistry, minimal plot. A terribly awful movie, overall.

One of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. Only 2nd movie in my life that I’ve walked out of. One star for the theatre and popcorn. If you enjoyed being a child caught in the middle of your parents arguing, you’ll enjoy this film. Otherwise you may find this nothing but stressful and ridiculous attempt at being ‘funny’. A poor attempt at trying to relate to situations during pandemic. I can’t imagine any couple being this juvenile-and there’s nothing funny about it, as a child listens in.

It's not bad but I probably would have enjoyed it more if they hadn't done the "talking to the camera/audience" thing.

They must have the lowest budget for this movie. Same house/location, only 2 lead actors (with script). Basically they were speaking to the camera as a third person about their life during lockdown in UK. Storyline.... if based on true story, it was sad to hear. But if the writer created the story, then it was super not interesting.

If you can sit through more than a minute of a Transformer or Vin Diesel shoot 'em up, don't waste your time here. If you like brilliant writing and acting, this is the one for you. I loved it!

Absolutely horrible movie. I had requested a refund. Life is too precious to waste that kind of time.

I go to movies to escape the pandemic. This was no escape at all. It was worse then watching the news. Depressing...

You know that awkward feeling you get when an unhappy couple unloads their dirty laundry on you during dinner? If you enjoy that awkward feeling then this is the movie for you. Does it improve? I don’t know as my wife and I left the theater early

Beware! The trailer has already shown you every scrap of film with character or entertainment value. One star for getting to watch James McAvoy. Otherwise this isn't even a movie.
