Tokyo Godfathers Reviews

Feb 20, 2025

I will be needing a few weeks to recover from this movie. What a beautiful, beautiful Christmas story. We follow three homeless people through Tokyo on Christmas Eve, and we watch as they stumble upon a baby in a pile of trash. They soon become determined to get the baby back to it's parents, and are led on a wild goose chase. Throughout the movie, we get a glimpse of each character's tumultuous background, and we watch as loose ends are resolved. I will definitely be watching this every Christmas Eve.

Quirky, sometimes harsh character drama about three friends trying to care for an abandoned infant while living on the street. Crisp animation and richly painted backdrops draw the audience in, while comic elements and a hopeful message help to soften the story's pervasive tragedy. The trio's efforts seem buoyed by divine intervention, as their newfound purpose leads them on a journey of reconciliation full of mysterious coincidences. Slow and steady pacing leads to a breathtaking finale.

A wild ride from start to finish. Intense, funny, heartwarming, and bizarre. There were a few plot elements that could use a little more explanation (I'm looking at you, Miyuki's plot), but overall it was enthralling.

3 Homeless people find an abandoned little baby girl and they make it their mission to find and confront the mother. This story happens around Christmas and new years making it a perfect season movie. Beautiful story. Great voice acting. And the animation, superb and it’s full of twists and turns. One of my all time favorites 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿/5 on Prime

Such a funny and beautiful movie, a lesson for people who believe that the "traditional family" is the only family that exists

"Tokyo Godfathers" is a 2003 anime movie from director Satoshi Kon. The story follows three homeless people as they find an abandoned baby. Having their own issues to work out, the hoboes decide to try to return the baby personally to the absent parents. Along the way the trio stumble across various misadventures and discover more about themselves. Unique is the word I would use to describe this film. If you line up the 50 best Christmas movies together, "Tokyo Godfathers" stands out for several reasons. The film is very well animated and has great music to accompany it. The story is always interesting, adding in a new twist and turn at just the right moment to keep the audience engaged without being too complicated. The movie is able to balance its humor and sentiment just right. The trio have a good dynamic and their dialogue work well off of each other. And the movie does not shy away from some of the darker elements of humanity. The homeless community during the Christmas season...it is a sobering thing to see. On the negative side, the movie ends pretty abruptly, and the characters can make some frustrating decisions. There are also a fair number of plot coincidences the movie chalks up to Christmas miracles. Which...yeah, I can but that. If you are looking for a different kind of Christmas movie, this is a Christmas gift worth unwrapping.

This movie is so fucking good. I LOVE HANA ESPECIALLY!!! I mean, the rest of the cast is amazing, but Hana has a special place in my heart! I just wish that (spoilers) the ending wasn't as open. Like, yeah, I get the artistic appeal of it, and I'm usually a sucker for open endings, but for this particular movie I genuinely wish there was like, at least a photo or something, years later with everyone smiling or something. These characters are too special to me. I *need* confirmation that they ended up okay. Anyway, 9/10. I wish it was a little bit longer so it could explore it's characters further, but it's one of the best holiday movies I've ever seen. And I'm jewish, and do not care about Christmas at all, so that's how GOOD the movie is to me

I was too young at the time to take in some of the themes of this great movie and there are a few. But the main one that lingered with me well after I saw it is how single moments in our past can effect us so much, it defines who we are for our whole lives. But if those moments were ones of shame, failure, or trauma, there is absolutely no reason we can't come back from that, and live a better life than what we are now.

The movie avoids sentimentality by its utterly strange narrative that throws in so many coincidences and seemingly random events that you're never quite sure where this is going.

I love the idea of more adult animated films focusing on human connection but couldn't quite get behind the script and pacing.

It's one of those movies you don't forget about. It's interesting and very often unpredictable, and I like the characters a whole lot. I like the way every piece and every character fits the story. It's also weird, in a good way, it's really fun how there's crazy stuff happening one after another and yet everything just feels so real at the same time, there's this flavor of rawness of the story and the characters that just makes it so oddly good. I like it a lot.

Very funny, and heartwarming anime Christmas movie. A little slow to start, but very soon it takes off and does not disappoint

It's now over 20 years old, yet experiencing it for the first time and I can hardly believe its age. It feels just as fresh and vivid and new as it did the first time it hit theaters. If you're going to show someone a Satoshi Kon movie, this is the one. It is also, without contest, the best animated Christmas film for adults. The trio is a wonderful group to hang out with for a little over an hour and a half. I'm reminded of the beauty of Satoshi Kon's films is that any one of them are good enough that if any production company in America had their hands on it, they would mangle it with an infinite amount of sequels. But this exists in isolation- as intended.

If you have anything against anime in general, please open an exception for this movie, the writers made absolutely there's not any "Japan Weirdness" we're all used to see on general anime and the result is one of the best stories ever written in animated media, an absolutely must see for any animation fans (and bonus points for technically being a christmas movie :) ). .
