Tootsie Reviews
Was very popular at the time but it luster has long since worn off. Just kitsch now.
I know this movie might seem politically incorrect now. But it was a different time back then. I think this movie could be considered a cult classic. It's about a struggling actor trying to make it in the business. Doing whatever it's takes to get by. He's not afraid to take chances. Dude dresses like a lady. But he's left with no choice. It's not from lack of trying. Hollywood can be like a woman. Feisty & To Fickle. Bill Murray, Teri Garr, Dustin Hoffman, Dabney Coleman, & Jessica Lange, Geena Davis give memorable performances. You might even say the storyline has been done before. Of a man dressing up like a woman to find a job in a man's world. But it's never been done better. With the exception of Mrs Doubtfire.
An interesting tackle on gender roles that feels like a precursor to Mrs. Doubtfire. I was considering a 9/10, but wasn’t sure about its complicated relationship with how it executes the feminism that it outwardly preaches. It’s very funny and Dustin Hoffman gives it his all, even if his first girlfriend’s relationship and the boundaries he crosses takes it down a slight notch. But still, I’d argue it’s less creepy and more original than its more famous cousin “Mrs. Doubtfire” in my book.
I like it... I think? I just need time to process everything... I just feel a bit freaked out right now.
My favorite movie. That's it, that's my review. It's my #1.
Undeniably has some great scenes (i.e. just about anything with Teri Garr or Bill Murray) but on the whole its a little too long and the romance isn't all that convincing.
This might just be one of the greatest comedies I've seen. Dustin Hoffman is 100% believable as a woman. "I was a better man with you, as a woman... than I ever was with a woman, as a man. "
Outstanding film and acting
Is an excelente comedy but isnt a LgTBQ picture. Please change this classification. Thanks
Funny and meaningful, Tootsie is one of the best comedies ever. Hoffman, Murray, Lange, Garr, Durning , and Coleman are all superb.
Has not aged well but good for this kind of thing.
Funny as hell!. Dustin Hoffman pulls it off beautifully.
When "Tootsie" first started, I was completely impressed by how it portrayed the life of a struggling actor with so much honesty and empathy. The movie's main premise seems to appear a bit abruptly and then the movie pivots into a romantic comedy with a lot of situational laughs. The performances in this movie are great and the story mostly does have a good heart and real emotions playing out. I feel like the movie evolves into something I didn't quite expect, but I still found plenty of enjoyment in it. Overall, it is a sweet and funny movie from the 80s that does boast some themes that will likely be applicable for a long time.
A masterpiece, which surprisingly holds up, inspite of the seismic shifts that have occured in our culture since then, (what with the transgender movement going mainstream). It still works as an examination of cis-gender males examining their own misogyny; and growing after traversing the gender divide. Interesting, this and Hoffman's other masterpiece, The Graduate; have similar plotlines. They're both about put upon loser types who are kind of heels; caper films both of them about this loser putting on a con through lying and deceipt; who con the two big women in their life; just to get exposed and humiliated at the ending; and then finally forgiven by the heroine before the credits role at the ending. Little Big Man also pivots on Hoffman being a desperate, anxious con man as well; fooling the people around him; and traversing cultural roles. Maybe this desperate anxious con man is so essentially part of who Hoffman is it just comes across in a lot of the movies he plays!
Watching Tootsie in 2022 was one of those mindbenders that seemed progressive for the time, but would likely face intense scrutiny from the same camp if it were cast and directed identically today — that being said, it has been on Broadway since 2019. The story avoids just becoming a "look at the straight guy in drag" show and touches important issues of sexism and show biz while including plenty of situational comedic relief. The matrices of love-triangles untangle better than I expected and the "big reveal" will leave you at the edge of your seat. Of course, we needed to end with a confession of love-o-logue™, which is restrained and fitting here. The draw is Hoffman as Dorothy, but I found much of the movie more entertaining when he was just Michael, the (sometimes by choice) unemployed actor. I'll reserve comment on Dorothy becoming "Woman of the Year" from a 21st Century lens — same goes for the push and pull on woman and masculinity and the differences between the two. I should watch (we all should watch) more movies with Jessica Lange.
A great forgotten comedy about the great difference between men and women.
A sharp, witty film with great dialogue and plenty of moments where they use the premise to its fullest potential in terms of comedy and character drama. It honestly hasn't aged bad at all for a 40-year-old film on gender politics. The hypocrisy Michael realizes about himself in his treatment of Sandy by seeing what the director does to Julie is good, but they played his half-reveal for laughs (good laughs mind you) instead of allowing for a sincere moment of him expressing remorse. It also dragged a bit when we visited the farm, but the whole Les subplot was critical to ramping up that big it-all-goes-wrong-in-one-night sequence toward the end. Great acting from Hoffman as well, unsurprisingly. Really entertaining and still offers some legitimate food for thought.
