Trance Reviews
If you're a Boyle fan lower your expectations a little. Its performances, visual style and attention to detail is enough make a very balanced film. If you love movies similar to Memento this is definitely something to check out.
An odd unconvincing set-up, with people hunting a McGuffin for the whole film, and sex and violence thrown into the mix. I didn't find this a satisfying movie.
I dare say that the film is really good! Yes, I agree, a little confusing, as we don't know if the scenes are images of hypnosis or if the situation is real, but everything is explained in the midst of chaos. Was it a tactic by director Danny Boyle to maintain suspense? If so, Danny did a great job directing. Actor James MacAvoy (remember WANTED from 2008?) is perfect in his character and his transformation. Could it be that being hypnotized we are so at their mercy? What a danger... Now, if not, then the film may be a bit exaggerated, but it still remains cool entertainment for those who are new to the subject, I liked it!!! And I have to confess, I was in a trance with the actress Rosário Dawson, oh oh, oh oh...
After a decent start, for a large portion of it's midsection the film is grindingly slow, muddled and filled with unlikeable characters. The ending picks up a little, but not nearly enough to make up for the preceding hour.
A movie that had too many twists and turns that had so many unlikable characters ,but kept me interested even at the end.
Excellent thriller very reminiscent of Shallow Grave (1994) but better!
I like McAvoy and Dawson, but this is simply a formulaic layered psychological drama. It's easy to simply put one twist on top of another, but when done so too thickly it merely becomes a distraction not an intriguing forey into the human condition. But I also have a problem with everyday characters who all of a sudden become hardened criminals and murderers. Hollwood loves to take the every day Joe and Jane citizen and turn them into unexplainable psychopaths. Towards the end I wasn't being entertained as much as bludgeoned with psychological twists and turns. I'll pass
Did Rosario Dawson put me in a trance...? Because I found the whole thing convoluted and hard to follow... I mean, it's really stylishly shot and it has a kind of cool ending, but I had trouble staying focused on what was going on. It probably didn't help that there wasn't really a likeable character in sight...
Other than it needing an alternate ending to gain a 5 star rating from me (SPOILER ALERT: Just kill Rosario Dawson's ultra-smug character for me, please? She's obnoxious and her winning is about the worst character you could pick to win) I found it a visually stunning and fun psychological crime thriller. It was a little disappointing from it being from the guys that did both Trainspotting films, but it's still absolutely recommendable. It's extremely fun!
A brain twisting film about an art heist that went wrong and a shrink who is in the middle of figuring it out and screwing people over.
OMG mind blowing! So many twists, such psychological drama! If you don't pay attention, you're already lost. Legit one of my favorite movies of all time! And hellur, James is hella hot
There is tension, but much of the movie is spent trying, not very successfully, to be clever. Yes, you're not always sure what's real, and nor are you always right, but the big reveal is unconvincing - it sort of makes sense, but doesn't give you that satisfying, clear picture of what really happened and how all the rest worked to hide it until the end. The dialogue is also frequently clunky, in the manner of so many stylised Brit gangster flicks. Finally, McAvoy and Cassell are both rather hammy, and Dawson is inconsistent and mostly forgettable. All the other characters are very much bit parts. Boyle has done some great stuff, but this is just adequate.
5.7/10 -(Seen on 1/27/19)
The first half of the movie seems cliché, but then there's plot twist after plot twist, and you don't quite know untilll the very end how it all comes together.
